Atender dos o más niños pequeños exige un gran despliegue de energía. La demanda de atención es gigantesca y las madres viven realmente agotadas. Mi madre lo vivió conmigo y el hermano que me sigue, entre los dos hay una diferencia de apenas un año. Yo no había terminado de gatear cuando nació mi hermano.

Hay quienes opinan que lo mejor es tener todos los hijos seguidos. Eso indudablemente tiene sus ventajas, se pueden aprovechar mejor las ropas y los utensilios que pasan de un niño a otro. Además, se va haciendo un cierre en una etapa que es la más linda de la crianza pero también la que  genera muchos sobresaltos. Pero creo que la principal ventaja de tener los niños seguidos está en el fortalecimiento de la relación que se cultiva entre los hermanos.

Desde la perspectiva de los hermanos el largo tiempo entre el nacimiento de uno y otro puede ser poco recomendable. Cuando nació mi tercer hermano ya yo estaba en la escuela, tenía otros intereses, y en realidad me llamaba mucho más la atención el mundo escolar que los llantos del nuevo bebé. Claro está, como hermano mayor y aunque apenas tuviese siete años tenía que echarle mano a mi madre en todo lo que pudiera. Pero casi no recuerdo haber compartido juegos con él, una cuestión que ha salido en algunas de las conversaciones que hemos tenido de hombres. En alguna oportunidad mi hermano me ha confesado que en los tiempos de la escuela él veía con cierta envidia a los niños que durante el receso compartían con sus otros hermanos de grados superiores o inferiores. Cuando él llegó al kínder yo estaba en el liceo.

Para agravar la situación, inmediatamente que me gradué me fui a trabajar a Maracay, allí me casé y las visitas a la casa materna, que estaba en Caracas,  se hacían cada vez mas esporádicas. Para aquel bebé que comenzaba la escuela su hermano mayor, o sea yo, era casi una leyenda.
