No one ever called Bill Gates stupid and didn't lie. When he was one of the hackers at his posh prep school, he learned of their feelings and actions regarding piracy. So, when he made DOS (actually stole it from DR DOS) he made it very easy to crack, and declaimed volubly against 'piracy' - knowing his former friends would take it as a personal challenge to crack it. They did. They also were the providers of IT services to American companies, and, since they used DOS (and later Windows, similarly taken from Apple's GUI) all their software tools were ported to it. So they had the companies they worked for use it too, making Bill Gates the richest man in the world out of spite. Perhaps the most brilliant marketing ploy ever devised.
