Thailand banks introducing biometrics for transfers and some people are happy, some are not

I don't really like the idea of biometrics being included in anything that I do. I just don't like the idea of every little aspect of my life being so trackable. In banking I suppose there is some benefit because it would make it even more difficult for someone to steal your money or use your cards but it's just the whole concept of being tracked that I don't like.

This was announced by the Bank of Thailand, which governs all the rules for the private banks of the country. This government-run body doesn't really have its own branches, it just makes the rules that all of them must follow - which is something I find strange but there are a lot of things in Thailand that I don't understand.

The order was issued recently and at first at least, it will only apply to transfers of 50,000 Baht or more - which is about $1500 - or to daily transfers of over 200,000 Baht.

That all seems fine and dandy at first but this is only going to apply to private individuals, not to corporations and the reasoning behind this is that corporation transactions are too frequently in excess of this amount and would create problems for the businesses.

I don't have a problem with preventing fraud and my life would be seriously upended if all of a sudden 200,000 Baht went missing from my account especially since I have less than that amount in my account right now. I do have a problem with the government deciding to do this and making it MANDATORY. If a bank wanted to implement this tech and made it voluntary for the customers whether or not they wanted to use it, I would be all for it. When a government makes is compulsory to take part in it, it starts to feel like data collection to me and as someone who has read plenty of Orwellian type books, I am not interested in the big brother watching everything that I do.

I am also concerned that the 50,000 transaction biometric limit is just a starting point and if the program is successful - as in if it works at all which in Thailand biometric programs tend to not work - that they will continue to lower that amount threshold until it encompasses all transactions of any sort. Combine this with the fact that more and more businesses are encouraging electronic payments and we will soon have every move, every purchase, every everything that we do watched by big brother. I'm not interested in that.

Thankfully Thailand has an excellent track record of having really grandiose ideas that they later discover requires a lot of technology, servers, and very intelligent people in order to maintain them. These plans, such as the QR Covid plan that failed within weeks of its unveiling normally just quietly disappear into the night.

Lets hope it fails as you are correct in your assumption that the figures will be lowered and everyone will be taking part. I saw somewhere that palm scans are being introduced and I am also against that as the obvious solution is by chopping off peoples hands to steal their money and it will happen. I just think they need to bring in heavier penalties for any type of theft so people will think twice first.

imagine the chaos if people started having limbs removed?  And you are right, that is exactly what would end up happening, either that or being forced at gunpoint to verify the biometrics and potentially having people get shot in a situation that previously would have only been financial loss.

Whatever "the man" wants it, they are gonna get it their way. This reminded me of 2 things happened back in the 90s.

1. A Toyota MR2 owner spent a good fortune converting his sports car into a futuristic antitheft system. One needed the access card to get into the car, swipe the damn card to turn the damn engine. Until one day the car ran out of battery, then only he realized he's fucked 🤣

2. A biometric retina scanner entrance security system may help to deter the burglar away. However, it doesn't stop the burglar to extract the eyeball for security clearance.

your second example is a scary one!   

I had an alarm on my car in high school and one day the key fob or whatever it is called just stopped working.   I had an older car so I could still get in the car and I could still drive it.   I was cruising down the street with the alarm going off and was pulled over by police.   I didn't get in trouble because it was clearly my car and it was a bit alarming (hehe) how quickly and easily the cops were able to disable the alarm.   I would imagine would-be car thieves could have done it even faster.

I worked in the insurance industry. The lecture gave us some case study out of the movie cut scene 😂 so I think we got a good idea of why carrying a security case with handcuffed is a bad idea. The retina recognition entry system scene was cut out from Demons and Angels by Tom Hanks. Also a very old example to debunk, a cut out scene from one of the faithful episodes of MacGyver where it uses dust collected from scraping to the wall, and dust on the palm print scanner doesn't work because most if not all biometric scanners required body heat to activate the scan.

The alarm system before the 2000s, most of them are a basic module attached to the vehicle where the door switches to trigger it. Logically, by disconnecting the module or hotwire the trigger may disable or trick the alarm system to stfu. However, the security system after the 2010s is different. It doesn't call the "alarm system" anymore because it does shut down the fuel pump and tells the ECU to cease operation 😂 if you lose your key, don't even think about still being able to drive it to the car guy.

This is bad news.   I have several bank accounts in Thailand and would be unable to do the biometrics given my current technology.   I'm going to have to make a call to my banks to see how this is going to affect my overseas capabilities.

This is a bit troubling because over here in Cambodia everything is done on the advice of China, so I fear whatever measures like this are done on your side of the border will eventually be done here in a much more intrusive way.
