Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 663)
Hello Everyone!

**A sleepy Sunday, More floodplain thoughts, A very full topsoil trap, An ordering snafu & The food scenario!**

I never wrote more than the day and number this morning before losing interest in writing and wound up bingeing out on the news instead and doing more land research. Eventually I will get back into the swing of writing each morning but for now I am okay with spending my time elsewhere as long as it is not the news!

For a while there I did good at not looking at the news until the afternoon and wholly avoiding it first thing in the morning. But... of late I have been backsliding on that more than I like. It has been difficult reasserting (maintaining) control of my phone addiction (from having to use it so much lately) and basically I have been looking at the news instead of looking at the phone!

My focus has obviously been all over the place and I have not gotten in as many hikes as I want to the last few days nor have I made much progress on getting things cleaned up and packed down. One thing that I am noticing is that yeah I cannot seem to do the research I need (for land and/or a place to live) and be packing simultaneously but I have at least been making good use of being cooped up indoors.

With the weather being the way it has been that has not been all that big of a deal but hopefully here soon I can find/settle on a place and then begin packing in earnest. I also still have to acquire some storage devices and now since I might be moving to a flood prone area... my new criteria for such devices is that they are also waterproof.

Honestly I think that if I do wind up moving into that flood zone that putting the bulk of my gear in storage is not all that bad of an idea given the hazards involved. It would actually be rather foolish of me to plop myself, critters and gear down in the floodplain and get all hippy-dippy and 'hope for the best' or some horseshit like that!

On a different note, I really need to clean out the topsoil trap soon because with all the rain it has gotten completely full again. Which is not majorly problematic but I have noticed that the surface water is now washing a good bit of the soil (and sand) out through the fence and the accumulated soil makes the fence in that area rather short.

I may wind up doing what I did last time and just dig a big trench in it instead of moving all that soil to the compost. Ideally the bulk of that soil would have wound up in flower pots next spring but given the scenario that is no longer on the itinerary.

Perhaps continuing to churn that soil over for the chickens to scratch in for worms and bugs is not all that bad of an idea either. The only real hitch to all that is that ever since it began raining so much I have not seen any worms in the soil when I am turning it but I may just need to dig down deeper.

Anyway, for some reason that resupply order that I made online got messed up and only a few of the items that I ordered will be arriving this week. The rest of it I had to cancel because of some weird fluke where the site wanted another payment type, accepted the changes for the payment type but then just gave me the same message all over again.

If it sounds annoying it assuredly was and even though only a few days had passed between the initial order and the new one... it changed the delivery time by several weeks. So it looks like I will have to make do with the dried prunes and twenty pounds of rice (that did successfully get ordered on the first try) and just wait on the rest of it.

Currently, I am way below the bare minimum that I like to stay at with the food supply and although those old feelings of 'food insecurity' have not returned... I sure am skating close to that occurring! All in all it is rather good though because at this point I have rotated out almost everything in my larder and can begin restocking it with newer items.

Overall, the strategy that I adapted last year has been really making the food go much further and while I am not exactly excited to be eating so much rice and pan-made bread it sure beats the alternative of nothing. Like I have said numerous times before between changing my buying habits, altering how often I make a supply run and utilizing my intense rationing skills... I have weathered the high prices... even if it is just barely so!

The biggest change has been cooking more often and while yeah I still dislike doing it and the mess it makes... I absolutely love making a few days worth of meals at a time and not having to do it every day unless I want to. I occasionally daydream about preparing a week's worth of food at a time and cut it down to only cooking once a week but I am definitely not there yet.

Well, I have meandered on enough for one entry and if I am going to stay on track with posting each day I best call this one good enough and get on with the editing and posting. I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.
