Coffee Chaos at the Library

The library district recently decided to open a hot beverage bar at each branch now that COVID-19 concerns are waning. We set up a table near our newspapers and magazines with a hot water dispenser, coffee machine, and basket full of assorted tea bags. We also have hot cocoa, cider mix, and snacks.

Unfortunately, all has not gone well.

I know, the image looks fairly tidy. It did not last. We failed to account for juvenile delinquents and the [tragedy of the commons.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons)

Originally, we did not offer a large container of Coffee Mate. No, we had nice little packets of creamer. We even had hazelnut-flavored creamer cups at first, but those were the first to vanish. Then the half-and-half cups. Then the powder packets. Now, after just one day, that canister was noticeably lighter despite a relatively light patron count.

The sugar also disappeared at an alarming pace. We had packets of brown sugar, sucralose, stevia, and raw cane sugar. *Had.* The packet basket started out organized and tidy. Cider and hot chocolate were consumed rapidly, and the tea was stirred around like a tempest adjacent to the teapot. Some of the empty sugar packets were also tossed in there for good measure despite the trash can *directly underneath the table.* Heathens!

But to cap it all off, after the snot-nosed brats mixed their oh-so-sophisticated sugar-and-creamer syrup with traces of coffee or tea, they threw away the mostly-full cups in our trash cans. One did so with enough force to splatter goo six feet up the wall right next to the computers. No books or electronics came to harm, but Miss A. had quite the cleanup job when she found it.

And that is why we can't have nice things. You might say this was *grounds* for cancelling the coffee bar. We'll see what happens.

Hello @jacobtothe, I like the comedy way you speak about this. I can never understand people's mentality. Isn't it just so much easier to make a cup when everything is in order?
It's the same as just eating at a park and leaving your trash right there instead of putting them in the bins provided.

You see something nicely arranged, why not leave it that way for the next person?... and the theft...😏

Humans! It never ceases to amaze me just *how* many humans — little and large — come across as if they were raised by wolves. And that's actually an insult to wolves, everywhere. 

Mostly, I think the vast majority of humanity suffers from a severe case of not being able to think of anything other than *THEMSELVES, RIGHT NOW.*

Not entirely related, when we had our brick-and-mortar store, some kid of about 17 came in one day and decided that it was OK for him to pry the lid off a donation jar for a local charity and try to help himself.

*"What the F!!! do you think you're doing?"* I asked.

He never missed a beat *"I just need some money,"* and he didn't even stop till I went to the front door and locked us in and told him he could explain that to the cops. He seemed completely *unaware* that his behavior was inappropriate... and it was even *my* fault that I was being *"uncool."*

And yes, he left, without any money... but it was still a bizarre incident.

While I was out sick, an *adult* completely demolished a 1,000 piece puzzle we've had on the community table for a week or so, and had gotten about 75% compete before this utter moron decided she would "take it apart so she could put it all together again." And she had the gall to sass my manager when she was taken to task! Some kids also applied stickers to a computer screen. A co-worker also got stuck in a ditch. And our youth librarian has sick kids. It's been a mess for everyone.
