Please Don't Chew On My Sleeve!

Librarians find themselves saying the strangest things sometimes, usually because people can just be *weird.* In this case, I was helping one boy find more books in a series he liked. While I was searching our online catalog, I felt something tugging at my sleeve. I looked down to see a smaller boy of perhaps 4 calmly gnawing on my plaid flannel shirt, leading to the admonishment with which I entitled this post.

"Please don't chew on my sleeve!" I surprised myself by managing to speak so calmly instead of snapping something more like, "What the **** do you think you are doing, you little ****?" My manager was in earshot, and was perplexed by my utterance, so she had to hear the full story. She was amused, to say the least.

Kids can be obnoxious. There's careless community puzzle destruction, roughhousing in the stacks, [coffee chaos,](https://peakd.com/hive-152524/@jacobtothe/coffee-chaos-at-the-library) and the like, but sometimes those little monsters just do things that make you wonder what on earth they could possibly be thinking. Looking at it from the child's perspective, it is kind of sweet that he felt at ease standing next to you and doing that. You apparently were very approachable. Or at least your shirt was...

I volunteer in a nursery once a week, and I'd say having my shirt chewed would be preferrable to having a kid unexpectedly put their slobbery hand on my lips. One of the many ways children may have given me norovirus.

Oh, yes, the little perambulatory pestilent petri dishes are an absolute menace. Too sick for school? No worries! they'll get free computer time at the library whilst spewing germs everywhere!

Well I hope you don't get sick too often. It seems the elementary and younger set often have things we have immunity against, at least in my experience. I'm always leaving the nursery thinking *This is the week. Going down for sure.* And then don't get sick. 

Who would you rather have, Shouty Guy (don't remember precisely what you call him), the lady that wants you to print everything, or the peaceful but diseased shirt chewer? Hard call?
