##### El primer rápel

Estoy casi listo para saltar al vacío. Inspecciono por segunda vez el arnés de cintura recién comprado en la tienda deportiva. Mi compañero, experto en descenso en rapel, confecciona con la driza una especie de silla, usando los nudos especiales que minutos antes me enseñaba, de saberlo antes no compro el cinturón especial, ahorrándome el gasto.

Él revisa los puntos de apoyo de la carga, están muy cerca del borde del acantilado, lo observo martillar en la roca unos clavos que él llama spits, coloca los mosquetones de seguridad y pasa las cuerdas a través de estos, mientras repite, como si fuera un mantra, lo importante de dominar el miedo para descender con seguridad, la diversión vendrá por sí sola. 

Estoy al borde del precipicio, ¡guao! desde aquí parece más alto, no estoy muy seguro de descender. Lo veo sonreír, como si supiera lo que pasa por mi cabeza; me da un descensor de barra y de espalda comienzo lentamente el descenso, la sensación de pérdida de apoyo inicial es tan desagradable, que pega en el estómago.

Llevo veinte pies de distancia, volteo la cabeza para ver el fondo, la cámara en mi casco de seguridad va filmando y acaba de grabar la palabrota de susto, escucho que frene, tenso la cuerda en la dirección contraria deteniendo el avance, veo hacia arriba y lo observo bajar de frente, no lo puedo creer, baja cabeza abajo.  En apenas segundos, está a mi lado con una risa burlona.

##### The first abseiling

I'm almost ready to jump into the void. I inspect a second time the waist harness just purchased from the sports store. My partner, an expert in rappelling, makes a kind of saddle with the halyard, using the special knots that he taught me minutes before, if he had known how to do it before, I would not have bought the special belt, saving me the expense.

He checks the support points of the load, they are very close to the edge of the cliff, I watch him hammer into the rock some nails that he calls spits, he places the safety carabiners and passes the ropes through them while repeating, as if were a mantra, the important thing of dominate fear to descend safely, the fun will come by itself.

I'm on the edge of the precipice, wow! From here it seems higher, I am not quite sure for want to descend. I see him smile as if he knew what is going through my head; he gives me a bar descender and of back, I slowly start the descent, the sensation of loss of initial support is so unpleasant that it hits the stomach.

I am twenty feet away, I turn my head to see the bottom, the camera in my safety helmet is filming and it has just recorded the swear word, I hear him say stop, I tighten the rope in the opposite direction stopping the advance, I look up and I watch him come down from in front, I can't believe it, head down. In just seconds, he is beside me with a mocking laugh.

Continuamos el descenso, la adrenalina recorre todo mi cuerpo, el miedo inicial se torna en fascinación, calculo 60 pies y estaré en tierra. Una leve sacudida, activa de nuevo el temor y sin pensarlo le informo a mi amigo. Veo preocupación en su rostro, algo anda mal, pero sigo descendiendo con un ritmo constante.

La sensación de vacío en el estómago regresa cuando percibo la pérdida de apoyo, caigo rápidamente sobre mis pies, doblo mis rodillas precipitándome al suelo. Boca arriba observo el extremo colgando de la cuerda rota del cual pendía mi vida. Mi corazón late fuertemente, mi amigo visiblemente preocupado pregunta, mientras suelta el mosquetón de la cuerda, si estoy bien.

Me rió fuertemente, dando gracias a Dios por evitar la rotura de la cuerda hasta los diez pies del suelo, y que no bajara como mi amigo.

We continue the descent, the adrenaline runs through my body, the initial fear turns into fascination, I calculate 60 feet and I will be on the ground. A slight jolt activates fear again, and without thinking I inform my friend. I see the concern on his face, something is wrong, but I keep descending with a constant rhythm.

The feeling of emptiness in the stomach returns when I perceive the loss of support, I quickly fall onto my feet, bend my knees, falling to the ground. Face up I watch the end hanging from the broken rope from which my life hung. My heart is pounding, my visibly concerned friend asks, as he releases the carabiner on the rope, if I'm okay.

I laughed out loud, thanking God for preventing the rope from breaking to ten feet off the ground, and not going down like my friend.
