Hi there. I’m Janice Duke and I’m an illustrator, philosopher and nature lover, with a purrticular fondness for cats. I’m based in Scotland and studied both art and philosophy at the University of Dundee. My favourite artists are: Salvador Dali, Auguste Rodin, and Leonardo da Vinci. My favourite philosophers are: Friedrich Nietzsche, Baruch Spinoza, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. These are probably the strongest influences on my personal work, as well as my interests in wildlife and mythology, along with a fondness for Carl Jung and Robert Anton Wilson. My main philosophical and artistic interest is perception; how and why we perceive our world as we do, and what this tells us about epistemology, ethics and metaphysics. I believe it is aesthetics – above all other branches of philosophy – that has the most to tell us about the meaning of life. 

Professionally I specialise in book covers and illustrations for books and articles. I am also working on a number of my own books, illustrating and publishing as an author myself. I have one book published, co-authored with my brother: [Post-Britannia](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Post-Britannia-T-C-Duke-ebook/dp/B01M03P32Y/). My first solo book, Hawk Divine, is due out later this year. Look out for some art and excerpts from that here in future.

Huge thanks to @antonchanning and @dana-varahi for letting me know about Steemit and encouraging me to share some of my thoughts and creations here; I would appreciate any feedback.  To start, here are a few pieces from my portfolio I’m particularly pleased with. I’ll talk some more about them in future posts. Welcome to the Steemit community @janiceduke! You do some awesome stuff! I love Scotland! I've been there years ago, travelled all around the island and was in love with that country from the beginning. Perhaps I was a Highlander in a former live?! I'm also interested in art, music and performance, and my literary interests cover on the fiction side Tolkien and King but I mostly read books on self-empowerment, mind work, spirituality and health. Hi Jen. Lovely to meet you. Glad you like my work! I reckon its easier to catch people's attention with a pretty picture than with even the most well crafted words (and a shame). Writers have it hard! One of the reasons I enjoy illustrating is being able to get people to pay attention to those well crafted words with a pretty picture. People seem to judge a book by its cover now more than ever!

Thanks so much for the lovely welcome :)  'All philosophy looks to destroy its idols.' Oh, yes! I can tell we're going to get along fabulously :)

Wittgenstein: one of those wonderfully enigmatic geniuses. His lack of clearly defined politics makes a certain amount of sense from what I know of him. Dogma seemed anathema to him, in his later years especially; yet he also seemed to feel so strongly about personal duty. Not tied to being a leader or a follower, but passionately individual. I admire that. I really struggled to get my head around his work in my last year of uni, but the effort was profoundly worth it; an excellent system smasher.

I’m really enjoying the sense of community on Steemit so far, so I think I shall be making myself comfortable and may take you up on that shout offer. Have watched a couple of your videos and found them really helpful and will be looking out for more from you. Cheers :)
