I learned this after a family tragedy in the 1990s, when my 13-year-old niece took her own life. It is very important to identify the depressed family member and make him/her understand that he/she needs help, that it is not weakness or lack of will, that it goes beyond that, and can become pathological and can be cured with specialized treatment.


To deal with a mental health problem that is often terrible and painful requires a lot of attention and care, in any case, it has to be faced and solved.  Avoiding reality and problems makes the problem bigger.

It is important that we always make ourselves available to love, understand and help those who need it, I have this experience of suicide in my family and I know what it feels like to be uncertain about why it happened and we did not notice the alarms and signs.

>***The relevance of coping***.

When mental health is degraded by the outright rejection of the present, I know this from my niece, who at age 13 made the decision to take her own life by shooting herself with a gun, you lose track of fate and destiny, just as she did, abandoned herself to pain and tragically saw no other way out...and the painful end came for us as a family.

I speak of all this because she left letters addressed to her grandmother (my mother) talking about what was happening to her. My mother is still alive (84 years old) and at that time I had to deal with the deep grief she was going through and I had to take her to professional help.  It was through those letters that we learned how she (my niece) felt before making such a terrible decision, that is why more than judging we must as a family and society help to prevent this type of situation.

>***The challenge comes when you ask yourself: If you don't have the means to pay for therapy, if no one will help you, what do you do? Is the way out to stop being a burden to others?***

It is part of what a country should offer its people, a good public health system. There are a large number of people affected by a mental disorder and there are no public mental health services that can take care of them. And private facilities are very expensive.

However, in the support group where I volunteer as an Ontological Coach and NLP we always guide them to go to the public hospital (psychiatry area) where we know there are specialized professionals who are being trained with good disposition to help.

The issue of mental health is a delicate one, because it is necessary to invest time, dedication and money to prevent mental illnesses from becoming chronic. The important thing is not to give up and find a way to move forward, I know how hard, but very hard it is when you only see everything black (I also learned this when I had cancer).

Thoughts, like food, are digestible or indigestible morsels. This is why the quality of them is so important, and running away from them is not the answer.

When this happens the body becomes unbalanced and illness comes, which is actually our body speaking because words cannot manifest. 

>***Without judging***

At least where I volunteer, we are promoting an environment of help where the person affected by different disorders such as: anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic, mourning for the loss of a loved one, among the most frequent ones, does not feel ashamed of their situation and can ask for and receive help in time.

We do this by instilling hope in the person who is depressed or who manifests desires not to continue living, we offer help instead of judging him/her in order to avoid stigmatizing him/her (singling him/her out).

Mental health care is a daily task for everyone. Definitely in the mind remain many of our ills, I always say be careful with what you think, because that is what you will feel and attract.

>***Clear life project***.  

It is important to have a healthy mind that adapts to changes in order to have a complete state of psychological, biological and social balance to be able to face the difficulties that arise in the different stages of our life.

It is also true that mental health can be altered when we have a bereavement, an economic problem, an illness and that there is not necessarily a mental disorder, it is more an adaptive situation that happens to all of us with the proper tools to move forward.

I usually put my mustard seed instilling strength and FAITH (psychosocial support) to those in my family and environment who need it. This allows us to be physically healthy, maintain bonds with positive people, healthy relationships, cope with stress (not isolate ourselves), reach our full potential in our work or whatever we like to do productively and contribute (fit in) to our community.

By way of mention, World Mental Health Day has been celebrated since 1995, every October 10, with the objective of raising awareness about emotional problems, eradicating myths and stigmas with flexible thinking on this subject and mobilizing efforts to improve it.

Esto lo aprendí después de una tragedia familiar en la década del año 90, cuando mi sobrina de 13 años se quitó la vida. Es muy importante identificar al familiar deprimido y hacerle entender que necesita ayuda, que no es debilidad ni falta de voluntad, que va más allá, y puede convertirse en patológico que con un tratamiento especializado se cura.


Para bregar con un problema de salud mental que muchas veces resulta terrible y doloroso se necesita de mucha  atención y cuidado, en cualquier caso, tiene que ser encarado y resuelto.  Evitar la realidad y los problemas, hacen el problema más grande.

Es importante que siempre nos pongamos a la disposición de amar, entender y ayudar a quién lo necesite, tengo esta experiencia de suicidio en mi familia y sé lo que se siente ante la incertidumbre del ¿Por qué pasó?  y no nos dimos cuenta de las alarmas y señales.

>***La relevancia de enfrentar***

Cuando la salud mental se degrada por el rechazo rotundo del presente, lo sé por mi sobrina, quien a los 13 años tomo la decisión de quitarse la vida con un disparo de pistola, se pierde la noción de la fatalidad y el destino, tal como ella lo hizo, se abandonó al dolor y trágicamente no vio más salida…y el doloroso final llego para nocotros como familia.

Todo esto lo hablo porque ella dejó cartas dirigidas a su abuela (mi mamá) hablando de lo que le pasaba. Mi madre aún vive (84 años) y en ese entonces tuve que lidiar con ella ante el duelo tan profundo  hubo que llevarla con ayuda profesional.  A través de esas cartas  fue cuando supimos como se sentía ella (mi sobrina) antes de tomar tan terrible decisión, es por eso que más que juzgar debemos como familia y sociedad ayudar a prevenir este tipo de situaciones.

>***El desafío llega cuando te preguntas ¿Si no tienes como pagar terapias, si nadie te presta la ayuda, que haces?  ¿Será la salida dejar de ser carga para otros?.***

Es parte de lo que un país debería ofrecer a su gente un buen sistema de salud pública. Hay un gran número de personas afectadas por un trastorno mental y no existen servicios de salud mental pública que puedan atenderlos. Y los centros privados son muy costosos.

Más, sin embargo, en el grupo de apoyo donde soy voluntaria como Coach Ontológico y PNL siempre les orientamos para ir al hospital público (área de psiquiatría) donde sabemos, hay profesionales especializados que se están formando con buena disposición para ayudar.

El  tema de la salud mental es delicado, porque hay que invertir tiempo, dedicación, dinero para evitar que se hagan crónicas las enfermedades mentales. Lo importante es no rendirse y encontrar la forma de salir adelante, sé todo lo duro, pero muy duro que resulta cuando solo se ve todo negro. (Esto también lo aprendí cuando tuve cáncer).

Los pensamientos, al igual que los alimentos, son bocados digeribles o indigestos. Por ello es tan importante la calidad de los mismos, y huir de ellos no es la respuesta.

Cuando esto pasa el cuerpo se desequilibra y llega la enfermedad, que en realidad quien habla es nuestro cuerpo porque las palabras no pueden manifestarse. 

>***Sin juzgar***

Al menos donde soy voluntaria se está promoviendo un ambiente de ayuda donde la persona afectada por diferentes trastornos como: ansiedad, depresión, trastorno por estrés postraumático, obsesivo-compulsivo, pánico, duelo por la pérdida de un ser querido, entre los más frecuentes no sienta vergüenza de su situación y pueda a tiempo solicitar y recibir ayuda.

Lo hacemos infundiendo esperanza al que está deprimido o manifiesta, deseos de no seguir viviendo, le ofrecemos ayuda en vez de juzgarlo para evitar estigmatizarlo (señalarlo).

El cuidado de la salud mental es tarea diaria para todos. Definitivamente en la mente permanecen muchos de nuestros males, siempre digo cuidado con lo que piensas, por qué eso sentirás y atraerás.

>***Proyecto de vida claro***  

Es importante tener una mente saludable que se adapte a los cambios para tener un completo estado de equilibrio psicológico, biológico y social para poder afrontar las dificultades que se presentan  en las diferentes etapas de nuestra vida.

También es cierto que la salud mental puede estar alterada cuando tenemos un duelo, un problema económico, una enfermedad y que ahí necesariamente no se trata de  un trastorno mental, es más, una situación adaptativa que nos sucede a todos con las debidas herramientas para salir adelante.

Suelo poner mi  grano de mostaza infundiendo fuerza y FE (apoyo psicosocial) a quien en mi familia y entorno así lo necesite. Esto nos permite estar físicamente sanos, mantener vínculos con personas positivas, relaciones sanas, afrontar el estrés (no aislarse), alcanzar el máximo potencial en nuestro trabajo o en lo que nos guste  hacer de manera productiva y contribuir (encajar) en nuestra comunidad.

A manera de mención, el día Mundial de la Salud Mental se celebra desde el año 1995, cada 10 de octubre, con el objetivo de concientizar sobre los problemas emocionales, erradicar mitos y estigmas con pensamientos flexibles sobre este tema y movilizar esfuerzos para mejorarla.

A 13-year old ending her own life is tragic. I'm sorry to read about your niece...

And I agree with you, mental health issues should not be taken lightly and we need to give more time and attention, and yes money too especially if it is severe. These days, more people tend to succumb to depression easily. and it's all the more that we need to be observant to be able to at least help. Thank you for sharing your tips on how to deal with related issues.

Esto es una realidad. Debemos estar atentos a nuestros familiares y tratar de ayudar en lo que podamos. El tema de tiempo, dedicación y dinero es un tema muy fuerte y lamentablemente algunos países no ofrecen servicios de cuidado de salud mental.
