The camps are split. There are those that will embrace and support the Artificial Intelligence race and those that have spoken out against it.  It's an interesting topic and spans uses from helping with mundane tasks to taking over and ruling the universe. There are calls to give AI human rights, there are calls to restrict scientists from dabbling in cognitive computing. This is the next "industrial revolution." Asimov's Laws need not apply. 

Are you scared that artificial intelligence is going to rule the world and take down society? There's more to and it involves cognitive computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.  All different potentials, different uses.  When I use the term A.I. I'm looping in all those technologies.

Let me show my hand. I deal with these systems on a daily basis, as part of my day job.  I'm not worried at all about the use of A.I. technologies. I am worried about things like unchecked bias drift and the unethical application and use of A.I. That doesn't seem like an A.I. problem though does it? Seems more human.  Gets us into the topic of roboethics or the ethics of artificial intelligence.  That is the ethics of human directed design and construction. Not to be confused with machine ethics or machine morality.  

Should we be scared of A.I. or should we be scared to humans molding and rearing the A.I. systems? Remember the Microsoft Chat bot, Tay[^2]. The chat bot that went off the rails?  That's what I'm mean when I say unchecked bias drift.  A bit extreme if you ask me. It happens in production systems as they analyze incoming data and make decisions. We have to constantly monitor and adjust systems to keep them within the societal norm. 

There's actually a group in the UK called The Center for the Governance of AI, and it is housed at the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford. They have entrusted themselves with the goal of guiding the development of A.I. for the common good of humanity. They publish papers in the hope that they will advise governments and industry.

So, what if we do address the roboethics, wrap a nice bubble around A.I. and the human directed design? What about the rational agency and morals agency of the self-learning machine?  How would an unsupervised self-learning machine handle the Trolley Problem [^3]?

Yikes! That's getting into deep philosophical territory. Think about it though. Apply the same problem to a self-driving car, auto pilot, or a security system. You see where I'm going. While I’m not scared of the future A.I. innovations I think we need to be cognizant of the designers and what values they impart on the A.I. algorithm.  Instead of limiting A.I. innovation and stifling progress do we adopt a sort of ethical oracle that sits on top of A.I. algorithms as an ethical algorithm?  Maybe it's a sort of an opt-in ethical certification. Seem to work in other industries, why not in the realm of the artificial intelligence.
