Back to the Mountains of NM & Deep in the Forest Once Again, With Amazing Views!

It’s good to be back in the forest and mountains once again, after spending almost 6 weeks in the Arizona high desert. Pretty views, but not the forest, and not in the mountains either,  so I’m excited to be back to some high country once again.

 I arrived in Silver City mid-afternoon, but after exchanging a new water carrier that broke less than two weeks after purchasing, and then the 30 minute drive north into the mountains, and then taking my time trying to find the perfect spot, I was just in time for one gorgeous sunset!

After over four hours in the car, Dakota was happy to be free again, and I was happy to be on my feet walking around as well.

I think I feel more at home in the mountains, in the forest country quite similar to what I’m used to in the northwest. I’m not sure the name of the mountains, but I’m in the Gila National Forest at just over 7,100 feet, northeast of Silver City and just north of Bayard. It seems well off the beaten path too, probably the worst road I’ve been on yet in my Subaru, but only for a very short section, and I managed to make it, so mission accomplished. It was slow going over some rocks a couple times, and I’ve already done a bit of ‘road repair’ to make access a little less sketchy to lower the risk of high-centering and damaging something important under there... 

I feel quite secluded though. I took a side road off the main forest service access road, and then a 2-track off that about 200 feet up the hill to where I decided to settle for the next couple weeks. And I still have good cell signals, so yay!

 That’s the trade off for a late arrival, as I had found a nice spot without any cell service a little deeper in the forest, but seeing on my map that there was another access road close by, I decided to check that one out, and sure enough, I found a spot with great views all around, and internet.

Only downside is there is a mining operation nearby I can hear the traffic from off in the distance that has really bright lights on at night, and also at night I can hear the highway traffic off in the distance, though it’s not too loud, and I can see the city lights of Silver City at night too, which is kinda cool. By the time I got my tent setup and firewood collected, and was sitting around the warm fire eating dinner, it was almost 10pm. At least there was already an old fire ring nearby, so didn’t have to build a new one.

Today was much more relaxing, and I was able to get pretty much everything properly setup, and have my wood stove setup, so I’m currently waiting on my warming water to be ready so I can shower, and then it’ll be time to make some chili.

I really like the tree varieties in this forest, much different even from the forest south of Silver City I stayed at previously, which was about 1,000 feet lower elevation, and didn’t have the epic views of bigger mountains that I’ve got here. There are massive cacti, which is surprising,  given how dense the forest is, and how big the trees are. This one was taller than me, and had a trunk the size of a small tree!

Tall mature Piñon pine everywhere mixed with Junipers and a few scattered Evergreen Oak trees, as well as some Ponderosa pines, though none right where I’m at. I found one Ponderosa probably less than a mile away on my first bike ride of the morning, and some snow patches.

Well I better be getting going now, as the sun is beginning to set, and my water is beginning to boil, so I’ll have just enough time to shower before dark... Just wanted to make a post on this gorgeous spot, and share my excitement to be back in the mountains and in the forest, where I feel most at home.
