Jazz-funk: “Let’s Stay Together”

<p><div class="text-justify">In 1969 Gene Bertoncini took part in <em>Toots</em> by Belgian harmonist Toots Thielemans, <em>Something in the Wind</em> by saxophonist Paul Winter, and <em>A Place Over the Sun</em> and <em>I’ve Gotta Be Me</em> by famous singer Tony Bennett. He also released his debut as a leader <em>Evolution</em>. In 1970 he contributed to the albums of jazz saxophonists Paul Desmond <em>Bridge Over Troubled Water</em> and Sonny Stitt <em>Sonny Blows</em>. It should be noted that in jazz, Spanish or acoustic guitars are not commonly used, as Bertoncini does, but semi-acoustic or electric ones.</div></p>

<p><div class="text-justify">In 1971 Bertoncini appeared in <em>Gilberto with Turrentine</em> by bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto and in <em>Odyssey of Iska</em> by outstanding jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter. In 1972 he participated in <em>Natural Illusions</em> by prestigious jazz vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, <em>All the King’s Horses</em> by smooth jazz saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. and <em>Two-Headed Freap</em> by organist Ronnie Foster. In 1974 he collaborated with jazz pianist, arranger, composer and conductor Michel Legrand in <em>Twenty Songs of the Century</em> and well-known jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond in <em>Skylark</em>. Then he played with jazz, soul and funk keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith in <em>Renaissance</em> (1976), and much later in <em>Watercolors</em> (1991).</div></p>

<p><div class="text-justify">In 1977 Bertoncini supported again Astrud Gilberto in <em>That Girl from Ipanema</em> and launched <em>Bridges in duet</em> with double bassist Michael Moore, in which Bertoncini arranged all the tracks, from baroque, classical and impressionist works to Great American Songbook standards, bossa nova and pop. In 1980 he performed in <em>Satisfaction Guaranteed</em> by jazz singer Mark Murphy and in 1983 in <em>After the Rain</em> once more with Michel Legrand. Then he presented four albums with Michael Moore, with whom he had enjoyed a fruitful musical relationship since their first encounter in 1977. He started with <em>Close Ties</em> (1984), in which he displays his passion for good melodies by making impeccable improvisations around them.</div></p>
