Screened at the last Cannes Film Festival on the closing day, it was one of the films I wanted to see. Is it worth it? Without a doubt. This extravagant film is an outpouring of energy and passion for one of the greatest icons of American culture: Elvis.

**Those who know the style of filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, know very well what they are going to get in his films, especially if they are related to music.   A total audiovisual spectacle that will make you vibrate from your seat, leaving you breathless and making you become a volcano of emotions.** 

From minute one Baz Luhrmann does what he wants with the audience.  He makes us laugh, rage, cry and get excited while we are bombarded with images that pass by at a dizzying pace so that we have no chance to stop. This can be great, for those of us who love his films, but for those who don't like the director's style, they can be moments of suffering. 

But not even his detractors can deny that he offers us an audiovisual spectacle loaded with a lot of energy, fun and very exciting, especially if you are a fan of the one who was called the King of Rock and Roll, the eternal icon Elvis Presley. 

Watching this show, in these times when only one formula is followed for almost all productions, is an unforgettable visual and sound delight.  It is the film that The King deserved, even family members have given statements through their social networks, praising the way the filmmaker and the actor who plays Elvis, approach it from the respect and pay tribute to a man who became a music legend. Priscilla and Lisa Marie posted positive reactions to the film, look them up on the internet for you to read.

There are many biopics or movies where the figure of Elvis plays an important role, but I assure you that none compares on an emotional level with the film by Baz Luhrmann, an author who knows how to make his images stir people's feelings, especially when it comes to such an important figure. 

**The film lasts approximately two hours and forty minutes, but for me that time flew by, when the final credits roll and with tears in my eyes I asked myself is that all? there's no more? I need more!  There is a rumor that there is a four hour director's cut, I don't know if it's true, but in case it is, I hope at some point I get to see those four hours.  I feel like I'm missing a lot of depth, but it's just that covering the entire life of The King would take too long.**

Los que conocen el estilo del cineasta Baz Luhrmann, saben muy bien lo que van a conseguir en sus películas, sobre todo si están relacionadas con la música.   Un espectáculo audiovisual total que te hará vibrar desde tu butaca, dejándote sin aliento y haciendo que te conviertas en un volcán de emociones. 

Desde el minuto uno Baz Luhrmann hace con los espectadores lo que quiere.  Nos hace reír, rabiar, llorar y emocionarnos mientras nos bombardean con imágenes que pasan a un ritmo vertiginoso para que no tengamos oportunidad de parar. Esto puede ser muy bueno, para los que amamos sus películas, pero para los que no les gusta el estilo del director, pueden ser momentos de sufrimiento. 

Pero ni siquiera sus detractores pueden negar que nos ofrece un espectáculo audiovisual cargado de mucha energía, divertido y muy emocionante, sobre todo si eres fan del que fue llamado el Rey del Rock and Roll, el eterno icono Elvis Presley. 

Ver este espectáculo, en estos tiempos en los que sólo se sigue una fórmula para casi todas las producciones, es un deleite visual y sonoro inolvidable.  Es la película que El Rey se merecía, incluso los miembros de la familia han dado declaraciones a través de sus redes sociales, alabando la forma en que el cineasta y el actor que interpreta a Elvis, la abordan desde el respeto y rinden homenaje a un hombre que se convirtió en una leyenda de la música. Priscilla y Lisa Marie publicaron reacciones positivas a la película, búscalas en internet para que las leas.

Hay muchos biopics o películas donde la figura de Elvis juega un papel importante, pero te aseguro que ninguno se compara a nivel emocional con la película de Baz Luhrmann, un autor que sabe cómo hacer que sus imágenes remuevan los sentimientos de la gente, especialmente cuando se trata de una figura tan importante. 

*La película dura aproximadamente dos horas y cuarenta minutos, pero para mí ese tiempo se me pasó volando, cuando pasan los créditos finales y con lágrimas en los ojos me pregunté ¿eso es todo? no hay más? ¡Necesito más!  Hay un rumor de que hay un corte del director de cuatro horas, no sé si es cierto, pero en caso de que lo sea, espero que en algún momento pueda ver esas cuatro horas.  Siento que  falto mucho por profundizar, pero es que abarcar toda la vida de El Rey tomaria mucho tiempo.*

Perhaps in all that footage that was discarded to make the film more digestible for the viewer, scenes from Elvis' stage as an actor and also the meeting with Nixon are included.  I also felt it lacked depth in the last stage of his life, not for morbid reasons, but a longer and more in-depth look at the last stage of his career before his death. Although I understand the reasons for not showing much of that part. 

Like all biopics of movie or music stars, there are lurid passages of their lives that are not shown, in the end it is a film where they take some creative liberties and change the chronological order of some events and there are totally invented scenes, but they serve to give dynamism and emotion to the narrative. To see things more real, there are documentaries. 

The difference of this biopic is that it transmits so much passion and energy that it makes a difference and it doesn't matter that some things are changed or that it doesn't talk about things that happened at the family level. The opposite case is the overrated Bohemian Rhapsody, which I consider one of the worst biopics in recent years. I remember that only the final concert scene is saved, the rest was a telefilm that transmitted absolutely nothing.

Quizás en todo ese metraje que se descartó para hacer la película más digerible para el espectador, se incluyen las escenas de la etapa de Elvis como actor y también el encuentro con Nixon.  También me pareció que faltaba profundidad en la última etapa de su vida, no por razones morbosas, sino una mirada más larga y profunda a la última etapa de su carrera antes de su muerte. Aunque entiendo las razones para no mostrar mucho de esa parte. 

Como todos los biopics de estrellas del cine o de la música, hay pasajes escabrosos de sus vidas que no se muestran, al final es una película donde se toman algunas libertades creativas y cambian el orden cronológico de algunos hechos y hay escenas totalmente inventadas, pero que sirven para dar dinamismo y emoción a la narración. para ver las cosas más reales, están los documentales. 

La diferencia de este biopic, es que transmite tanta pasión y energía, que marca la diferencia y no importa que se cambien algunas cosas o que no se hable de cosas que sucedieron a nivel familiar. El caso contrario es la sobrevalorada Bohemian Rhapsody, que considero uno de los peores biopics de los últimos años. Recuerdo que sólo se salva la escena del concierto final, el resto fue un telefilm que no transmitió absolutamente nada.

The release of the film has brought up old discussions about Elvis' music.  On the internet there are many articles where they say that the artist used cultural appropriation, since his music has a lot of influence from music made by African Americans, but the movie itself shows that he received those influences since he was a child. For me these are meaningless discussions, you have to focus on the time in which he emerged, white men of course had privileges that African Americans did not have, but it was already a social and political problem, Elvis was only an artist who served for the white population of that country and other people in the world to listen to the music that was only broadcasted in radio stations and clubs for African Americans. 

That is why he made history, he marked a milestone within the music industry and American culture, he is not guilty of that, on the contrary, he contributed a lot. These sterile discussions out of the temporal context are useless. Who dominates music now? The world's population now listens to African-American music in all its variations.   But these debates will continue to arise, especially in these times of cancellation.

**I remember when I was a teenager and I listened to old music: Beatles, Rolling Stone and, of course, Elvis Presley, some of my friends did not like that music, because they said it was too old, but I loved it. There was no internet and I would find information in newspapers or magazines about Colonel Parker. Most of them were articles talking about all the negative things about the man and how he influenced Elvis' career.** 

It is from the figure of Colonel Parker that this story is told, played by a fantastic Tom Hanks, using a lot of makeup and prosthetics to look so fat.  I loved seeing Hanks in the role of a villain, something that is not very common in the actor, we are always used to see him as the hero figure, but here he plays a despicable being, a character that disgusted me, because he was a vermin, who was only interested in money. 

Of course, much of Elvis' success is due to Colonel Parker's ability to do business, to represent him and make money out of everything.  There's no denying it, but I think Elvis was destined to become a cultural icon, even without Colonel Parker. It would have been another manager who would have led him to stardom, but as fate would have it, it was this man, a total master of deception, who took control of Elvis' music career. Unfortunately, we can't travel back in time and change history. 

**If Ton Hanks shines playing the nefarious Colonel Parker, the one who dazzles and gets all the credit is actor Austin Butler.** 

Butler gave it his all and prepared like Elvis, proving that he is a professional.   The young man has had experience in film and television with youth productions and even in plays alongside Denzel, but I am absolutely sure that the movie Elvis will mark the before and after of this actor's career. 

Strength, energy, passion, total dedication, he has no physical resemblance to Elvis, but in every scene he manages to transform himself into The King Elvis, it is incredible what this actor does, transmitting so much passion and a deep respect for the character he plays. Watching him interpret, because no imitations, as others who have impersonated Elvis have done.    Like a chameleon he changes his skin and stops being Butler to become Elvis. I have no words to praise the actor's work, he has earned my total admiration and if Malik won the Oscar for his passionless Mercury, at least Butler deserves a nomination.

There is still a long time to go and many films to be released this year, but I have a feeling that next awards season, in 2023, the red carpet is going to welcome the two icons of American pop culture: Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.  Without having seen Blonde, Ana de Armas and Austin Butler will at least be at the Golden Globes, which are no longer vetoed and will be televised again.

**Elvis is a movie you must see and enjoy.  I want you to see it and be as fascinated as I am by this extraordinary work that is a beautiful tribute to the man who made music history and became, even if he didn't want it, the King.**

El estreno de la película ha sacado a relucir viejas discusiones sobre la música de Elvis.  En internet hay muchos artículos donde dicen que el artista utilizó la apropiación cultural, ya que su música tiene mucha influencia de la música hecha por afroamericanos, pero la propia película demuestra que recibió esas influencias desde pequeño. Para mí son discusiones sin sentido, hay que centrarse en la época en la que surgió, los hombres blancos por supuesto tenían privilegios que no tenían los afroamericanos, pero ya era un problema social y político, Elvis sólo fue un artista que sirvió para que la población blanca de ese país y otras personas del mundo escucharan la música que sólo se emitía en las emisoras de radio y clubes para afroamericanos. 

Por eso hizo historia, marcó un hito dentro de la industria musical y de la cultura americana, no es culpable de eso, al contrario, aportó mucho. Estas discusiones estériles fuera del contexto temporal son inútiles. ¿Quién domina la música ahora? La población mundial escucha ahora la música afroamericana en todas sus variantes.   Pero estos debates seguirán surgiendo, sobre todo en estos tiempos de cancelación.

*Recuerdo cuando era adolescente y escuchaba música antigua: Beatles, Rolling Stone y, por supuesto, Elvis Presley, a algunos de mis amigos no les gustaba esa música, porque decían que era demasiado antigua, pero a mí me encantaba. No había internet y encontraba información en periódicos o revistas sobre la figura del Coronel Parker. La mayoría eran artículos en los que se hablaba de todo lo negativo de ese hombre y de cómo influyó en la carrera de Elvis.* 

Es a partir de la figura del Coronel Parker que se narra esta historia, interpretada por un fantástico Tom Hanks, utilizando mucho maquillaje y prótesis para parecer tan gordo.  Me encantó ver a Hanks en el papel de un villano, algo que no es muy común en el actor, siempre estamos acostumbrados a verlo como la figura del héroe, pero aquí interpreta a un ser despreciable, un personaje que me dio asco, porque era una alimaña, que sólo le interesaba el dinero. 

Por supuesto, gran parte del éxito de Elvis se debe a la habilidad del Coronel Parker para hacer negocios, representarlo y hacer dinero con todo.  No se puede negar, pero creo que Elvis estaba destinado a convertirse en un icono cultural, incluso sin el coronel Parker. Hubiera sido otro mánager el que le hubiera llevado al estrellato, pero el destino quiso que fuera este hombre,  un total maestro del engaño, quien asumiera el control de la carrera musical de Elvis. Por desgracia, no podemos viajar en el tiempo y cambiar la historia. 

*Si Ton Hanks brilla interpretando al nefasto Coronel Parker, quien deslumbra  y  se lleva todo el mérito es el actor Austin Butler.* 

Butler lo dio todo y se preparó como Elvis, demostrando que es un profesional.   El joven ha tenido experiencia en cine y televisión con producciones juveniles e incluso en obras de teatro junto a Denzel, pero estoy absolutamente seguro de que la película Elvis marcará el antes y el después de la carrera de este actor. 

Fuerza, energía, pasión, entrega total, no tiene ningún parecido físico con Elvis, pero en cada escena logra transformarse en El Rey Elvis, es increíble lo que hace este actor, transmitiendo tanta pasión y un profundo respeto por el personaje que interpreta. Verle interpretar, porque nada de imitaciones, como han hecho otros que han personificado a Elvis.    Como un camaleón cambia de piel y deja de ser Butler para convertirse en Elvis. No tengo palabras para alabar el trabajo del actor, se ha ganado mi total admiración y si Malik ganó el Oscar por su Mercury sin pasión, al menos Butler merece una nominación.

Todavía queda mucho tiempo y muchas películas por estrenar este año, pero tengo la sensación de que la próxima temporada de premios, en 2023, la alfombra roja va a recibir a los dos iconos de la cultura pop estadounidense: Marilyn Monroe y Elvis Presley.  Sin haber visto Blonde, Ana de Armas y Austin Butler estarán al menos en los Globos de Oro, que ya no están vetados y volverán a ser televisados.
