I haven't seen the last episode of the season yet, but with everything I've seen, I think it's enough to do an evaluation and review the HBO series Perry Mason.

**Perry Mason and his friend Pete are private investigators who do small jobs for a living, whether it's gathering evidence for a law firm, photographing a future movie star sleeping with a married man, and then raising money for the photos.  But a horrific kidnapping that turned into a homicide has occurred in Los Angeles, and the event shocked people, because the deadly victim is a baby, soon making the parents suspects, in addition to involving a rich man who is a member of a religious cult with a woman leader who seems to be a little deranged. Perry Mason is given the task of doing some research for the defense attorney, the case will be the most important he has ever encountered and will change Mason's life completely.**

It was one of the series I had been waiting for since HBO announced that they were preparing a new television version of the famous lawyer created by the writer, and also lawyer, Erle Stanley Gardner and who appeared in many of his crime novels. 

In the late 1950s, Perry Mason had a television series that lasted about nine seasons, with notable audience success. This tenacious lawyer, committed to his clients to prove their innocence was very popular. The character only lost one trial in all his novels and television episodes, he was a foolproof lawyer.

**HBO opted for a completely opposite version of the well-known Perry Mason on television.**  Don't expect to see something similar to the image immortalized by actor Raymond Burr in the series of the 60s and which years later would return to act in the TV specials of the 80s and 90s. I think there was also a production in '73, but I'm not entirely sure. Raymuond Burr died in 1993.

The first season of this new Perry Mason immerses us in the origins of the character, when he was a private investigator working for a prestigious lawyer in Los Angeles. Tormented by the trauma of war, separated from his son by a failed marriage, this Perry Mason lives on the farm he inherited from his parents, doing little research and enjoying the pleasure of alcohol.

The series seemed to focus only on him as a private investigator, but the story slowly shows how Perry Mason goes from being a simple investigator to becoming a lawyer in a controversial case in the city.  That transformation can upset many followers of the classic Perry Mason, because in this new version, he becomes a lawyer in a tricky way.

**The criticism of the series is divided,** there is a group that applauds the risky decision to demystify the character, for others it is an offense to the image they had engraved in their memory, by the novels and old television series. 

 Although it has not been praised by everyone, HBO has confirmed the production of the second season. It's official, we'll have a new batch of episodes, where we may see how the reputation of a lawyer who doesn't lose a case is built.  Although I haven't seen the last episode yet and I don't know if Perry will win the trial. It seems difficult, everything is against him.

**Most episodes are directed by Tim Van Patten,** who is well known and has always been involved in the most successful HBO productions.   He has won awards for "The Sopranos" and "Boardwall Empire", the latter with some similarities to Perry Mason, for being set in the 1930s.

When they announced that Matthew Rhys would be the actor who would play the new Perry Mason, I was very happy with that decision. He's an actor that I like very much. I became a fan when I saw the series The Americans, where he worked with his current wife, where they played a couple of Soviet spies infiltrating the United States. With his transformation and evolution of that character, he showed all the talent he has as an actor. 

**Now, as the new face of Perry Mason, the actor shines again, endowing the character with that stormy past, with frustration and unhappiness that seems to lead him to the abyss. In a film noir environment, the hero must fight his own demons. I hope he will receive a Golden Globe nomination next year.** 

The rest of the cast also has well-known and not-so well-known names, but all of them are wasting talent.  Among the most prominent are John Lithgow as the prestigious lawyer E.B. Jonathan, Mason's employer and protector. Juliet Rylance as the faithful secretary Della Street, this character has a secret that they have added to act the character a little, although it is something that can be seen coming. Chris Chalk and his black police officer, inserted in the story to show the racism of the time.  Solvent actor Shea Whigham is Pete, a friend of Mason's who is also a private investigator.  And the female star of this first season is actress Tatiana Maslany playing sister Alice, a controversial leader of a religious cult.

Sister Alice's story is the one that has received a lot of criticism from viewers, in various film and television forums on the Internet, most of them having negative words towards this subplot.    For some, everything about Sister Alice's religious worship and apparitions is unbearable.   It is a pity, because the actress Tatiana Maslany is very dedicated in her performance.  Her scenes in the church may seem exaggerated, but the fact is that the performances of religious spokespersons of the time were like that in that city. 

**Personally, I don't care about that subplot; on the contrary, it reflects the religious fanaticism that dominated much of society in those years after the Great Depression. And the character is inspired by a real person named Aimee Semple McPherson.**

I understand that this first season was intended to show the origin of the mythical lawyer Perry Mason and has left me satisfied in almost everything.  The atmosphere of the time and that dirty, gray style, I loved it.   It's true that in the crime being investigated and in the subsequent trial, although in the first episode he manages to make an impact, the investigation process takes too long. 

**It's not a series that reaches perfection, like the previous HBO ones, but all that can be fixed in the second confirmed season.  I like it because I'm a fan of this kind of story, I recommend it and I hope you like it.**
