Documentary about a person capable of generating the most extreme reactions.  No, it is not about a politician.  It is about a film critic.

I read it for the first time in a photocopied article that someone whose name I don't remember gave me on one of my visits to the film club. I didn't have internet and the only film critics I read were two journalists from my country who published in El Nacional, one of the most important newspapers of the time. 

I was just discovering Spanish cinema, which was scarce in my Latin American country, and I had to wait for a Spanish film season at the film club or at a festival.  My option was the former, since, at that time, most of the festivals were held in the capital of the country, and I did not have the resources to travel. 

I remember carefully reading that movie review that totally trashed a Spanish horror film, starring young actors. The name of the film is not clear to me, but my surprise and admiration for those harsh words against a film that I had liked, but that reviewer thought it sucked.   I laughed reading it. Who the hell wrote this? Is he crazy?   That's what I thought and quickly went to the end, to see who signed that article: Carlos Boyero.  

That name provokes two reactions, hatred and admiration.   I don't know how the balance is nowadays between detractors and admirers . Perhaps the former are in the majority.  After four decades dedicated to being a film chronicler and writing about other subjects as well, expressing what he thinks can cause discomfort among all those who detest him. 

**It doesn't matter if you are from the group of those who can't stand him, you can think the worst of him, for bad and for good, you can't deny that Carlos Boyero is a reference and marked an era when it comes to writing about cinema in Spain.  To dislike him because you don't like what he writes, because you didn't like the movie that changed your life, because you don't like him, because he was addicted to drugs, or worse, because you don't agree with his opinion, is an act of selfishness.** 

Most of the time I don't agree with Boyero's opinions.  There are hundreds of movies I love that he has trashed in his articles.   Sometimes I agree with some of his opinions.   Whether I agree or not, I respect him, because his opinion is valid, and he does it with foundation, with arguments based on his experience as a spectator, because before being a film critic, he is actually a spectator, with many films seen, so those who criticize him because he does not waste time analyzing technical elements of a film, is because they have not understood that this is not his style. 

With the advent of the internet it was easier for me to find his film reviews, many were negative and of films that I had liked, but for me it was a pleasure to read Boyero, I find it important to read different opinions from people who are also passionate about the art of film and stories.

> Lo leí por primera vez  en un  artículo fotocopiado que alguien cuyo nombre no recuerdo me dio en una de mis visitas al cineclub. Yo no tenía internet y los únicos críticos de cine que leía eran dos periodistas de mi país que publicaban en El Nacional, uno de los periódicos más importantes de la época. 

> Apenas estaba descubriendo el cine español, que escaseaba en mi país latinoamericano, y tenía que esperar a que hubiera un ciclo de cine español en el cineclub o en algún festival.  Mi opción era la primera, ya que, en aquella época, la mayoría de los festivales se celebraban en la capital del país, y yo no tenía recursos para viajar. 

> Recuerdo haber leído con atención aquella crítica de cine que destrozaba totalmente una película de terror española, protagonizada por actores jóvenes. El nombre de la película no lo tengo claro, pero  si  mi sorpresa y admiración por aquellas duras palabras contra una película que me había gustado,  pero a ese critico  le pareció una porqueria.   Me reí leyéndolo. ¿Quién coño ha escrito esto? ¿Está loco?   Eso fue lo que pensé y rápidamente fui al  final, para ver quién firmaba ese artículo: Carlos Boyero.  

> Ese nombre provoca dos reacciones, odio y admiración.   No sé cómo está el equilibrio hoy en día entre los detractores y admiradores . Quizá los primeros  sean mayoría.  Después de cuatro décadas dedicado a ser cronista de cine y escribir también sobre otros temas, expresar lo que piensa, puede causar malestar entre todos aquellos que le detestan. 

> **No importa si eres del grupo de los que no le soportan, puedes pensar lo peor de él, para mal y para bien, no puedes negar que Carlos Boyero es un referente y marcó una época a la hora de escribir sobre cine en España.  Renegar de él porque no te gusta lo que escribe, porque no te gustó la película que te cambió la vida, porque no te cae bien, porque era adicto a las drogas, o peor, porque no estás de acuerdo con su opinión, es un acto de egoísmo.** 

> La mayoría de las veces no estoy de acuerdo con las opiniones de Boyero.  Hay cientos de películas que me encantan y que él ha destrozado en sus artículos.   A veces estoy de acuerdo con algunas de sus opiniones.   Esté de acuerdo o no, le respeto, porque su opinión es válida, y lo hace con fundamento, con argumentos basados en su experiencia como espectador, porque antes que crítico de cine, en realidad es espectador, con muchas películas vistas, así que los que le critican porque no pierde el tiempo analizando elementos técnicos de una película, es porque no han entendido que ese no es su estilo. 

> Con la llegada de internet me fue más fácil encontrar sus críticas de cine, muchas eran negativas y de películas que me habían gustado, pero para mí fue un placer leer a Boyero, me parece importante leer opiniones diferentes de gente que también es apasionada del arte cinematográfico y de las historias.

**The documentary summarizes in one hour and twenty minutes some aspects of Carlos Boyero's life.  Shot in a simple but effective way, it shows Boyero himself talking about things in his life, alternating with testimonies and opinions of actors, filmmakers, journalists and friends of the controversial film critic.** 

The group of people giving their opinion seemed to me to be very small, I would have liked a wider selection, especially of detractors.  Although perhaps that could have resulted in a more solid documentary that could have sparked a new debate on the figure of Boyero. I understand that Juan Zavala and Javier Morales Pérez wanted to sketch a friendlier portrait of a person who has always been surrounded by controversy. 

Younger moviegoers may not know who Boyero is, but moviegoers with a few more decades behind them, he is undoubtedly a well-known name.  Since this is not a production that delves into the more scandalous parts of Boyero's career, what it shows is enough to make those who don't know him curious and decide to investigate on their own. 

It seems to me very important to pay attention to the environment in which he grew up, having it clear from an early age that he repudiated his father and being under a conservative education, under the control of representatives of a religion that made him see the negatives of absolute power. Boyero himself explains that this is where his problem with the exercise of power comes from. He is a man who has the burden of living with traumas and demons from his childhood. 

The filmmaker Fernando Trueba, who has known him since his university days, as well as other friends of his, admit that he is a person who can be difficult, that they have argued and even spent years without speaking to each other.   By the way, I was very amused when Trueba tells in the documentary the first thing Boyero said to him when he met him.   I won't say it to avoid spoilers, I'd rather you hear it when you watch the documentary, but it's a phrase that I would have easily said myself.  

The addiction problems, alcohol, cocaine, is no secret and Boyero, being already an older person, recognizes that these are things that made him more impulsive, surely many of his articles were written under the effects of any of these substances. Although his sincerity and expressing his point of view has always been part of his style.    

Those of us in Latin America can watch and listen to him on youtube, in the radio program La ventana del Cine. Every time I have the opportunity I look him up, many times he has said in that program that he considers himself, above all, a spectator who likes movies and that it is a privilege to be paid for watching and writing about movies, he does not call himself a critic and has not said that what he says is the absolute truth, it is only his opinion, he writes what he thinks, without caring about getting along badly with the director of the film, if he does not like it, he says so, whether he is a friend or not.    The detail is that for decades he has been an influential person and when he made a bad review of a film, it ended up affecting the distribution and the number of viewers. 

The documentary also deals with the enmity between Boyero and Almodóvar.  Unfortunately, Boyero does not like Almodóvar's films, so far he has only liked Volver (and not entirely). Almodóvar even asked for the dismissal of the film critic from an important media. Is a meeting between these two characters possible?  I don't think so.  Almodóvar's production company refused to participate and give their opinion in the documentary.

> **El documental resume en una hora y veinte minutos algunos aspectos de la vida de Carlos Boyero.  Rodado de forma sencilla pero efectiva, muestra al propio Boyero hablando de cosas de su vida, alternando con testimonios y opiniones de  actores, cineastas, periodistas y amigos del polémico crítico de cine.** 

> El grupo de personas que dan su opinión me ha parecido muy reducido, me hubiera gustado una selección más amplia, sobre todo de detractores.  Aunque quizás eso podría haber dado como resultado un documental más sólido que podría haber suscitado un nuevo debate sobre la figura de Boyero. Entiendo que Juan Zavala y Javier Morales Pérez hayan querido esbozar un retrato más amable de una persona que siempre ha estado rodeada de polémica. 

> Puede que los cinéfilos más jóvenes no sepan quién es Boyero, pero los cinéfilos con algunas décadas más a sus espaldas, sin duda es un nombre conocido.  Dado que no se trata de una producción que ahonde en las partes más escandalosas de la carrera de Boyero, lo que muestra es suficiente para que quienes no lo conozcan sientan curiosidad y decidan investigar por su cuenta. 

> Me parece muy importante prestar atención al entorno en el que creció, teniendo claro desde pequeño que repudiaba a su padre y estando bajo una educación conservadora, bajo el control de representantes de una religión que le hizo ver lo negativo del poder absoluto. El propio Boyero explica que de ahí viene su problema con todo lo que sea el ejercicio del poder. Se entiende entonces por qué emite opiniones al margen de lo que piensen los demás.  es un hombre  que  tiene el peso de  vivir con  traumas y demonios de su infancia. 

> El cineasta Fernando Trueba, que le conoce desde su época universitaria, así como otras personas amigas suyas, reconocen que es una persona que puede ser difícil, que han discutido e incluso han pasado años sin hablarse.   Por cierto, me hizo mucha gracia cuando Trueba cuenta en el documental lo primero que le dijo Boyero cuando le conoció.   No lo  diré para no soltar  spoilers, prefiero que lo escuches  cuando  veas el documental, pero es una frase que yo mismo hubiera dicho fácilmente.  

> Los problemas de adicción, alcohol, cocaína, no es ningún secreto y Boyero, siendo ya una persona mayor, reconoce que son cosas que le hicieron más impulsivo, seguramente muchos de sus artículos los escribió bajo los efectos de alguna de estas sustancias. Aunque su sinceridad y expresar su punto de vista siempre ha sido parte de su estilo.    

> Los que estamos en Latinoamérica podemos verlo y escucharlo en youtube, en el programa de radio La ventana del Cine. Cada vez que tengo la oportunidad lo busco , muchas veces ha dicho en ese programa que él se considera, ante todo, un espectador al que le gusta el cine y que es un privilegio que le paguen por ver y escribir sobre cine, no se autodenomina crítico y no ha dicho que lo que dice sea la verdad absoluta, es sólo su opinión, escribe lo que piensa, sin importarle llevarse mal con el director de la película, si no le gusta, lo dice., sea amigo o no.    El detalle es que durante décadas ha sido una persona influyente y cuando hacía una mala crítica de una película, acababa afectando a la distribución y al número de espectadores. 

> El documental también aborda la enemistad entre Boyero y Almodóvar.  Por desgracia, a Boyero no le gustan las películas de Almodóvar, hasta ahora sólo le ha gustado Volver (y no del todo). Almodóvar llegó incluso a pedir el despido del crítico de cine de un importante medio de comunicación. ¿Es posible un encuentro entre estos dos personajes?  No lo creo.  La productora de Almodóvar se negó a participar y dar su opinión en el documental.

**The power of the word, is what I perceive when a film critic has so many detractors and people who hate him.** It is true that his words have hurt many people, some may consider themselves insulted. In addition, he has been branded as a sexist, misogynist, drug addict and any of those things that nowadays seem mortal sin.  Boyero has always been politically incorrect and has caused controversy in the past. Imagine now with this society where you can no longer say what you think. 

At the end of the documentary I am left with the image of a Boyero stuck in time. He doesn't use the internet, something I already knew from listening to him on the radio program and we see it in the documentary. He lives an analog life in a digital era. It was his decision, but at the same time I think he has lost space.  In life you have to be up to date, otherwise you become outdated, old-fashioned.   It's a type of film critic that will never exist again, times have changed. 
 
I have read his review of the Oscar winning film Everything at once everywhere and it confirms what I said before.  Boyero is stuck in the past.  I laughed reading it.  I loved the movie and I'm glad it won the Oscar, that's why I find it funny that Boyero says he didn't understand it, that he had to watch it in parts, that he found it an unbearable movie and that he didn't understand what the story was about. And I am not a youngster, I am an adult and I think the movie is great. I don't share Boyero's opinion, but I understand that being stuck in his bubble of the past, it's hard for him to understand that we are already in the future.

**The Critic is a documentary that I liked, it is a nice portrait of a controversial character who represents a style of film criticism that is in extinction.  A documentary that cinephiles will enjoy. Except Almodóvar and the thousands of people who can't stand the critic.**

> **El poder de la palabra, es lo que percibo cuando un crítico de cine tiene tantos detractores y gente que le odia.** Es cierto que sus palabras han herido a mucha gente, algunos pueden considerarse insultados. Además, ah sido tildado  de  machista, misógino, drogadicto y cualquiera de esas cosas que hoy en día parecen pecado mortal.  Boyero siempre ha sido políticamente incorrecto y ha causado polémica en el pasado. Imagínate ahora con esta sociedad en la que ya no puedes decir lo que piensas. 

> Al final del documental me quedo con la imagen de un Boyero estancado en el tiempo. No usa internet, algo que ya sabía por escucharle en el programa de radio y lo  vemos en el documental. Vive una vida analógica en una era digital. Fue su decisión, pero al mismo tiempo creo que ha perdido espacio.  En la vida hay que estar al día, de lo contrario te quedas anticuado, pasado de moda.   Es un tipo de crítico de cine que no volverá a existir, los tiempos han cambiado. 
 
> He leído su crítica de la película ganadora del Oscar Todo a la vez en todas partes y confirma lo que he dicho antes.  Boyero está anclado en el pasado.  Me he reído leyendo.  Me ha encantado la película y me alegro de que ganara el Oscar, por eso  me hace gracia que Boyero diga que no la entendió, que tuvo que verla por partes, que le pareció una película insoportable y que no entendió de qué iba la historia. Y yo no soy un jovenzuelo, soy un adulto y la película me parece estupenda. No comparto la opinión de Boyero, pero entiendo que al estar metido en su burbuja del pasado, le cueste entender que ya estamos en el futuro.

> **El Crítico es un documental que me ha gustado, es un retrato amable de un personaje controvertido que representa un estilo de crítica de cine que está en extinción.  Un documental que disfrutarán los cinéfilos. Excepto Almodóvar y los miles de personas que no lo soportan.**
