The Innocent is a Spanish miniseries released over the weekend on Netflix based on the novel of the same title by acclaimed American writer Harlan Coben published in 2005.

**Coben is an author from whom several of his works have been adapted to film and television.**  His most successful novel, Tell No One, was adapted in 2006 by French filmmaker Guillaume Canet.   He has also participated in the television industry, writing miniseries for British and French production companies. But it is with the Netflix platform that most of his adaptations have been made.

*Mateo Vidal is a young man who, together with his brother, enjoys a night out.  Before leaving the place, he meets a girl, they flirt and start dancing. The girl's boyfriend and his group of friends start an argument with Mateo's brother and go out to settle the matter with blows.  The fight between all involved ends fatally. Mateo pushes one of the boys, named Dani, and he is hit in the head and dies on the spot.  Mateo will be sentenced to 4 years in prison where he will be involved in a fight with one of the prison bosses, who will die. When his parents die in an accident, he is given a furlough where he meets a beautiful woman named Olivia. But he hides the truth from her and never sees her again.   Four years after his release from prison, he works at his brother's law firm. Strangely, every week he sees the mother of Dani, the young man who died because of him. She treats him as if he were her son. Suddenly, Olivia reappears in his life, they get married and she becomes pregnant. Everything seems to be going well for Mateo Vidal. But on a business trip with his wife, she disappears and he receives messages and images of a naked man next to her.  With the help of the company's private detective, he tries to locate her.  At the same time, a nun named María Luján commits suicide under strange circumstances at a boarding school. Homidios' detective Lorena Ortiz, with a traumatic past due to the suicide of her father, will be in charge of the case. The nun has the name Aníbal tattooed on her abdomen. Mateo Vidal es un joven que junto a su hermano está  disfrutando de una noche de fiesta.  Antes de irse, conoce una chica, coquetean y comienzan a bailar. **The first three episodes are excellent. They will leave you speechless because of all the questions that open up.  Events that happened in different places and characters that seem to have nothing to do with each other, everything will have a connection.**
 
I suggest you pay close attention to the first episode, especially to the faces of each of the characters, even if it is a small part.  If you look closely, you will be able to piece together the puzzle of the story. 

**Don't trust any character, many are not who they say they are, nor can you define at the beginning who are the good guys or who are telling the truth.** All human beings have good and evil, that's what I like about the plot, it keeps us for a while making us doubt everyone. 

At one end of the story is Mateo Vidal, who served four years in prison for accidentally killing a person.  Eight years have passed since then. The victim's mother has gotten over the loss and is friends with Mateo, whom she treats as if he were her son Dani. Dani's father still hates Mateo Vidal. He believes that four years in prison has not been enough and suspects that he will reoffend. 

Mateo's happy life will change when his wife travels to Berlin, but then he receives text messages and videos of her sleeping in her underwear and with a strange naked man next to her. *Is it revenge for something that happened in prison? Is she the one hiding something? What the hell is going on?*

On the other hand, a nun at the boarding school where Inspector Lorena Ortiz grew up apparently committed suicide, but the evidence points in another direction.  Apparently, the nun was leading a double life and was going out at night to enjoy life. When photos of the corpse reach the Special Crimes Unit, agent Teo Aguilar alerts his boss - it seems the woman has been wanted for 10 years. *What does the tattoo mean? Who was the nun? Why is she a priority for the Special Unit? And what the hell does this have to do with Mateo Vidal?*

**The miniseries wants the viewer to be impressed in every episode. To a certain extent it succeeds.  For lovers of thrillers with plot twists, it is entertaining and at the end all the plots are closed.**
  
I advise you to watch the first three episodes at once.  I think they are very good, they hook you and will leave you hallucinating as they try to explain everything that happens.

*Los tres primeros episodios son excelentes. Te harán volar la cabeza por todas las interrogantes que se abren. Hechos ocurridos en lugares distintos y personajes que parecen no tener nada que ver  con el otro, todo  tendrá una conexión.* 

Sugiero que prestes mucha atención al primer episodio,  especialmente a los rostros  de cada uno de los personajes, así sea  un rol pequeño. Si te fijas bien, podrás ir armando el rompecabezas  que nos plantea la historia. 

*No confíes en ningún personaje, muchos no son quien dice ser, tampoco se pueden definir al principio quienes son los buenos o quien dice la verdad.* Todos los seres humanos  tenemos bondad y maldad, eso me gusta de la trama, que  nos mantiene por un tiempo  haciéndonos dudar de todos. 

En un extremo de la historia es Mateo Vidal, que pago cuatro años de cárcel  por  matar accidentalmente a una persona.  Han pasado ocho años de ese hecho. La madre de la víctima  ha superado la perdida y es amiga de  Mateo a quien trata como si fuese su hijo Dani. En cambio, el padre de Dani  todavía odia a Mateo Vidal. Cree que cuatro años de prisión no fueron suficientes y sospecha que volverá a cometer un delito. 

La  feliz vida de Mateo cambiara cuando su esposa viaje a Berlin y luego recibe mensajes de texto y vídeos de ella dormida en ropa interior y  a su lado un extraño hombre desnudo. *¿Sera una venganza por algo que ocurrió en prisión? ¿Es ella la que oculta algo? ¿Qué demonios está pasando?*

En el otro lado de la historia, una monja  del internado donde  creció  la inspectora  Lorena Ortiz, aparentemente se suicido, pero las evidencias apuntaran en otra dirección.  Al parecer la monja llevaba una doble vida y por las noches  salía   a disfrutar de los placeres de la carne. Cuando  las fotos  del cadáver lleguen a la Unidad de Delitos Especiales, el agente Teo Aguilar alerta a su jefe, parece que  la mujer era buscada desde hace 10 años. *¿Qué significa el tatuaje? ¿Quién era la monja? ¿Por qué es una prioridad para esa Unidad especial? ¿Y qué demonios tiene que ver esto con Mateo  Vidal?*

*La miniserie  es efectista y quiere que en cada episodio el espectador quede impresionado. Hasta cierto punto lo logra.  Para los amantes de los thrillers con giros de guion,  es entretenida  y  al final todas las  tramas se cierran.*  

Les sugiero  que vean los tres primeros episodios  de una vez. Me parecen muy buenos, enganchan y  te dejaran  alucinando al intentar dar explicación a  todo lo que ocurre.

### Too much is not good

The puzzle is pieced together in each episode and, after the first three, unfortunately the miniseries enters a bit predictable territory with many of the subplots.  If you pay attention to the details, you'll realize who some of the villains in the story are. Characters that are wolves in sheep's clothing. 

**Everything in excess is bad. What's your favorite food?  Let's say it's Pizza.  You love to eat Pizza, but for a couple of weeks you only eat Pizza for breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner.   That excess will make you not want to eat it anymore.** 

That's what happens in the miniseries with the excessive plot twists - I love surprise twists in stories, I'm a fan of plot twists!  But The Innocent goes way over the line.  I understand that the creators want to surprise us. But when there is an excess of plot twists, what you get is to exhaust the viewer. Already the last three twists didn't impact me or make me feel anything.  The great hook of the miniseries, is at the same time its worst flaw.

#### El exceso no es bueno

El puzle   se va armando en cada episodio y después de  los tres primeros capítulos, lamentablemente   la mini serie  entra   en un terreno  un poco predecible  con muchas de las sub tramas.  Si  prestas atención a los detalles,  te percataras de quienes son algunos villanos de la historia. Personajes que son lobos  disfrazados de corderos. 

*Todo en excesos es malo. ¿Cuál es tu comida preferida? Supongamos que sea la Pizza. Te encanta comer Pizza, pero por un par de semanas desayunas,meriendas, almuerzas y cenas solo Pizza. Ese exceso causara que  ya no quieras comerla más.* 

Eso pasa  en la miniserie con los  excesivos plot twist. *¡Yo amo los giros  sorpresas en las historias! ¡Soy fan de los plot twist!*  Pero El inocente  se pasa de la raya.  Entiendo que los creadores quieren  sorprendernos. Pero cuando hay un  exceso de  giros de  guion, logras es agotar al espectador. Ya los últimos tres giros  no me impactaron ni me hicieron sentir nada.  El  gran gancho de la mini serie,  es al mismo tiempo  su peor defecto.

### Stereotypes and  Sky Rojo-style discourse.

One of the subplots goes down the road of prostitution and I'm tired of seeing the stereotypical brothel owners as ruthless, eccentrically dressed villains.   That cliché of all brothel owners dressing like circus clowns detracts from the credibility of that whole part. Surely some Romanians and gypsies who own these places dress like that, but not everyone who runs a brothel is as they are portrayed in every series or movie. A little more originality, please. 

In the style of the Red Sky series, we will meet some prostitutes who are mistreated, beaten and enslaved.  This shows that it is an imposed discourse in these productions so that the public believes that the whole world of prostitution is only as they show it.  When in reality this world has many layers.   I have explained this in other reviews. It bothers me that here they repeat over and over again that discourse, but there is already a socio-political undertone to this.   Also, the scenes are too far-fetched in the style of the Hostel movies.   

**Although it may have a couple of negative points that put a dent in the story we are told.  It's a miniseries that I enjoyed.  As with everything I watch, I balance the positive and the negative, focusing on what I found entertaining, complying with the rules of the genre the result is a remarkable product that meets its objective.  I enjoyed all eight episodes, but I was exhausted by the excess of plot twists.**

#### Estereotipos y discurso estilo Sky Rojo

Una de las sub tramas aborda la prostitución y estoy cansado de  ver el estereotipo de dueño de  locales de prostitución como  despiadados villanos que visten de forma  excéntrica.  Ese cliché de que todos los dueños de esos locales se visten como si fueran payasos de circo, le resta credibilidad  a todo esa parte. 

Seguramente algunos rumanos y gitanos dueños de locales de ese tipo se visten así, pero no todos los que regentan un burdel   son    como los retratan en todas las series o películas. *¡Un poco mas de originalidad por favor!* 

Al estilo de la serie Sky Rojo, conoceremos a unas prostitutas que son abusadas, golpeadas y esclavizadas. Con esto se comprueba que es un discurso impuesto en estas producciones para que el público  crea que todo ese mundo de la prostitución es solo como lo muestran ellos. Cuando en la realidad  ese mundo tiene muchas capas. Eso lo he explicado en otras reviews. Me molesta que aquí repitan una y otra vez ese discurso, pero ya hay un trasfondo socio político  en esto. Además que se pasan de inverosímiles las escenas  al estilo película Hostel.   

*Aunque  puede tener ese par de  puntos negativos que hacen mella en la  historia, es una miniserie  que  me gusto. Como en todo lo que veo, hago un balance entre lo positivo y  lo negativo, para quedarme con todo lo que me pareció entretenido, cumpliendo  con las  normas del  género el resultado es un notable producto que  cumple con su objetivo. Disfrute  de los ocho episodios, pero quede aturdido  ante tantos plot twist.*

**I think Mario Casas has to be given the title of current king of the Spanish thriller on Netflix.**  During the last few years there have been several productions produced and distributed by the platform in which the actor is the protagonist of a series or film of the genre.   In El inocente he plays Mateo Vidal, the young man who, after making a mistake, accidentally kills another boy and serves his sentence in prison.  But Mateo seems to hide some secrets, it seems that he was involved in the death of another inmate, although he has always denied it.   The mistake of his past seems to haunt him and not leave him alone, someone seems to want to hurt him and see him back in prison. *Is Mateo telling the truth? What is he hiding?*   When you finish watching the miniseries, in its last minutes before the final credits. You will have the definitive answer.

En El inocente interpreta a Mateo Vidal, el joven que tras cometer un error, mata accidentalmente  a otro chico y cumple  su condena en prisión. Pero  Mateo parece esconder algunos secretos,  parece que estuvo involucrado en la muerte de otro recluso, aunque siempre lo ha negado. El error de su pasado parece perseguirle y no dejarlo en paz,  alguien  parece querer hacerle daño  y verlo nuevamente en prisión. *¿Dice la verdad Mateo? ¿Qué oculta?* Cuando termines de ver la mini serie, en sus minutos finales antes de los créditos finales, obtendrás  la respuesta definitiva.

**Lorena Ortiz.** The homicide cop who, as a child, saw her father commit suicide. She carries that trauma with her, still reproaching her for her beloved father's decision to abandon her like that. She will be in charge of the investigation of the nun who apparently threw herself into the void. Her instinct and tenacity will lead her to discover secrets that should never have come to light. She will have to confront her superiors to find the truth about the whole affair. Will she succeed? This character is played by actress Alexandra Jiménez. It was nice to see her back in a dramatic role, as her career has been mostly focused on comedy. I liked her character and her performance.  Many will recognize her from El Club de la Comedia.

**Teo Aguilar** is the Special Crimes Unit agent who has been searching for the nun who committed suicide for 10 years.  It seems that the woman has a secret that can cause harm to very important people (businessmen, politicians, judges).  He is a cop willing to do anything to find something that the nun hid.  He has the authority to go over detective Lorena's head and seems to know more than he says. *What is Teo Aguilar hiding?* The great actor José Coronado plays this tough cop.   Coronado already worked with the director in the film El Cuerpo and Contratiempo.

She meets with him, hiding from her husband.  She likes to chat with Mateo and the two of them have almost a mother-son relationship. Is she involved in something? Is her forgiveness sincere? Ana Wagener plays Sonia. The actress was the big surprise of the film Contratiempo.

**There are more important characters, but I won't go into too many details about them because it would be revealing too much of the plot and I want you to enjoy the mystery.**   Actor Xavi Sáez plays the mysterious man who sends photos and videos to Mateo. Who is this man?  Santi Pons plays Gallardo, a retired Marbella policeman who years ago was investigating the death of a prostitute and who without explanation seems to have something against Mateo.  Susi Sanchez plays Sister Irena, headmistress of the nuns' boarding school. She seems to know things she hasn't told Lorena. Martina Gusman plays Kimmy Dale, a prostitute friend of the girl murdered years ago in Marbella. Miki Esparbé plays the mysterious Aníbal.  Anna Alarcón plays Zoe, a private detective and hacker who will help Mateo.

**The Innocent is a good adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel and the screenplay written by Jordi Vallejo, Oriol Paulo and Guillem Clua adds more shocking elements that may overwhelm the viewer, but make for an entertaining thriller full of unexpected twists.** 

The story is affected by the same factors that make it interesting. I ended up a bit tired, but it could also be that I watched all eight episodes back to back. I recommend you watch the first three first, take a break and then continue with the others. Maybe it's best enjoyed that way, because it has too many plot twits.

*El  Inocente es una buena adaptación de la novela de Harlan Coben y  el guion escrito por Jordi Vallejo, Oriol Paulo y Guillem Clua le agrega más elementos  impactantes que quizá agobien al espectador, pero conforman un thriller entretenido lleno de giros inesperados.* 

La historia ve afectada por los mismos factores que la hacen interesante. Yo termine un poco  cansado, pero  también puede ser que vi los ocho episodios seguidos. Te recomiendo ver primero los primeros tres, tomar un descanso y luego continuar  con los demás. Quizás se disfruta mejor de esa manera, porque  tiene demasiados plot twist.
