HBO + Davis Simon + George Pelecanos is an equation that will thrill anyone who recognizes these names. Such is the case for me, who spent six weeks waiting for the respective weekly episode to admire the new work of the man who created the great American TV novel: The Wire.

**Fourteen years have passed since the last episode of what I consider to be the best series on American television was aired and at the time of writing these lines I feel a little pain when I remember that Michael K. Williams left this earthly world last year. It happens to me every time I have to talk about The Wire, the character played by the actor in that series was so iconic that it is difficult not to vibrate with emotion when evoking that wonderful story.** 

*What does The Wire have to do with the miniseries We Own This City?* A lot.  Beyond sharing the same creators, this production could easily be a sequel to The Wire or even function as a spin off. I'm not saying anything crazy, they don't share characters, but they do share the most important thing: the city of Baltimore. 

Simon and Pelecanos already told us how bad the system and especially that city was in The Wire and surely the production of this miniseries caused them pain, because everything they already denounced for five seasons, now is worse than fifteen years ago. Get ready for a trip to the sewers of a city that is proof that the whole system has failed and has no solution.

For those of us who live in Latin America many movies have altered the way we see some countries, thinking they are a great paradise, even every day people die trying to enter the land of dreams, but the reality is that even in those places in the world where the quality of life may be better than a third world country, it is plagued with other problems and they have in common something: the cancer of corruption. 

**The only thing I criticized about The Wire was the way it toned down the main characters, who were cops, but it was justified, Simon had worked as a journalist and had befriended many homicide detectives.** Also, it was about showing the fateful and failed war on drugs and our heroes were shown as human, with their personal problems, alcohol addictions and of course overdoing it with brute force at times, but for the most part they were characters who followed the rules and did their police work as best they could. 

Police corruption was obviously addressed, but not in depth, the high commanders were portrayed as incapable people who only sought to fill the statistics, because the prevailing political system forced them to do so, no matter how good intentions they had at the beginning. It was a battle lost from the very beginning and the end of it corroborated it in a masterful way.  I will never tire of recommending it to anyone who has missed out on watching a raw gem of television.

*Han pasado catorce años desde que se emitió el último episodio de la que considero la mejor serie de la televisión estadounidense y en el momento de escribir estas líneas siento un poco de dolor al recordar que Michael K. Williams dejó este mundo terrenal el año pasado. Me pasa cada vez que tengo que hablar de The Wire, el personaje que interpretaba el actor en esa serie era tan icónico que es difícil no vibrar de emoción al evocar esa maravillosa historia.* 

*¿Qué tiene que ver The Wire con la miniserie We Own This City?* Mucho.  Más allá de compartir los mismos creadores, esta producción podría ser fácilmente una secuela de The Wire o incluso funcionar como un spin off. No digo ninguna locura, no comparten personajes, pero sí lo más importante: la ciudad de Baltimore. 

Simon y Pelecanos ya nos contaron lo mal que estaba el sistema y sobre todo esa ciudad en The Wire y seguro que la producción de esta miniserie les causó dolor, porque todo lo que ya denunciaron durante cinco temporadas, ahora es peor que hace quince años. Prepárense para un viaje a las cloacas de una ciudad que es la prueba de que todo el sistema ha fallado y no tiene solución.

Para los que vivimos en Latinoamérica muchas películas han alterado la forma de ver algunos países, pensando que son un gran paraíso,  incluso cada día muere gente intentando entrar en la tierra de los sueños, pero la realidad es que incluso en esos lugares del mundo donde la calidad de vida puede ser mejor que la de un país tercermundista, está plagado de otros problemas y tienen en común algo: el cáncer de la corrupción. 

*Lo único que criticaba de The Wire era la forma en que se suavizaba a los personajes principales, que eran policías, pero estaba justificado, Simon había trabajado como periodista y había hecho amistad con muchos detectives de homicidios.* Además, se trataba de mostrar la fatídica y fracasada guerra contra las drogas y nuestros héroes se mostraban como humanos, con sus problemas personales, adicciones al alcohol y, por supuesto, excediéndose con la fuerza bruta en ocasiones, pero la mayoría eran personajes que seguían las reglas y hacían su trabajo policial lo mejor que podían. 

La corrupción policial fue obviamente abordada, pero no en profundidad, los altos mandos fueron retratados como personas incapaces que sólo buscaban llenar las estadísticas, porque el sistema político imperante les obligaba a ello, por muy buenas intenciones que tuvieran al principio. Fue una batalla perdida desde el primer momento y el final de la misma lo corroboró de forma magistral.  Nunca me cansaré de recomendarla a quien se haya perdido de ver una cruda joya de la televisión.

**Now, with We Own This City, the plot takes us by the hand to see the worst side of police corruption in Baltimore City and surely in many other cities across the country.** It's no longer a love letter to the city, it's a protest letter with a clear message: we're screwed! Because unlike The Wire, where many of its stories were inspired by real characters, but there was a lot of fiction, this time what is told is a true story, which occurred in that city and uncovered one of the most unpleasant cases of corruption where none of those involved, directly or indirectly, came out unscathed. 

Achieving realism is very difficult in most television series, but Simon and his team are craftsmen who do it to perfection. It is difficult for many viewers not to feel anger and helplessness when watching some scenes, especially if the viewer has lived through one of these terrible situations, simply for having a different skin tone than those in power. 

**Simon no longer seems to care about anything, in the end, all is lost, the city is being destroyed every day and that is why he will target all the culprits, no one is saved in this last desperate cry for society to realize the monster they have created and that has devoured them.** There is no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel. The few good ones that remain, give up their struggle and leave the reins to other idealists who will repeat the cycle of disappointment until they end up jaded and so on. 

The outlook is bleak and I couldn't help but feel sad.  It is a miniseries that leaves nothing to hope for, if your mood is not very good, I suggest you don't watch it yet, because you will end up emotionally shattered. Better wait until you are in a good mood. It is a cold and pessimistic miniseries, although it is set in an American city, these same problems exist in other parts of the world, and honest and hardworking people are the ones who always get hurt, it is the collateral damage of an inherent evil in all societies: corruption in all aspects: moral, political and social. 

*So far I have not told you what the plot of the miniseries is, but first I warn you that, like most of Simon's creations, it is a choral drama, with many characters.*

*Ahora, con We Own This City, la trama nos lleva de la mano para ver la peor cara de la corrupción policial en la ciudad de Baltimore y seguramente en muchas otras ciudades del país. Ya no es una carta de amor a la ciudad, es una carta de protesta con un mensaje claro: ¡estamos jodidos!* Porque a diferencia de The Wire, donde muchas de sus historias estaban inspiradas en personajes reales, pero había mucha ficción, esta vez lo que se cuenta es una historia real, ocurrida en esa ciudad y que destapó uno de los casos más desagradables de corrupción donde ninguno de los implicados, directa o indirectamente, salió indemne. 

Lograr el realismo es muy difícil en la mayoría de las series de televisión, pero Simon y su equipo son unos artesanos que lo hacen a la perfección. Es difícil que muchos espectadores no sientan rabia e impotencia al ver algunas escenas, sobre todo si el espectador ha vivido una de estas terribles situaciones, simplemente por tener un tono de piel diferente al de los que ostentan el poder. 

*A Simon ya no parece importarle nada, al final, todo está perdido, la ciudad se está destruyendo cada día y por eso apuntará a todos los culpables, nadie se salva en este último grito desesperado para que la sociedad se dé cuenta del monstruo que han creado y que les ha devorado.* No hay esperanza, no hay luz al final del túnel. Los pocos buenos que quedan, renuncian a su lucha y dejan las riendas a otros idealistas que repetirán el ciclo de decepción hasta acabar hastiados y así sucesivamente. 

El panorama es desolador y no pude evitar sentirme triste.  Es una miniserie que no deja nada que esperanza, si tu estado de ánimo no es muy bueno, te sugiero que aún no la veas, porque acabarás emocionalmente destrozado. Mejor espera que  tengas buen estado anímico. Es una miniserie fría y pesimista, aunque esté ambientada en una ciudad americana, esos mismos problemas existen en otras partes del mundo, y la gente honrada y trabajadora es la que siempre sale perjudicada, es el daño colateral de un mal inherente a todas las sociedades: la corrupción en todos los aspectos: moral, político y social. 

*Hasta ahora no les he contado cuál es el argumento de la miniserie, pero antes aviso de que, como la mayoría de las creaciones de Simon, es un drama coral, con muchos personajes.*

### What is the plot?

*The main story revolves around Sergeant Wayne Jenkins, who began his rise in the Baltimore Police Department until he became the leader of a special division for weapons tracing, a squad destined to seize weapons and drugs, but that division was rotten from the beginning and what was a special force that was supposed to protect citizens, became an entity that stole and committed abuses of all kinds against everyone. At the same time, we will see how by accident a federal investigation is started that will bring to light the dirty laundry of the police, while civil rights advocates try to make changes before the new president takes control of the country and local politicians do not have the capacity to provide a solution. All of the above unfolds in tense streets as the memory of the Freddie Gray tragedy simmers.* **What do you think, a nuclear bomb! Are you still hesitant to watch it?**

**A few months ago I told you that I didn't like the movie King Richards, remember? I was a little hard on the director and I really didn't like his work on that movie, and now I'm more convinced that he didn't have total freedom on that movie.**  But now Reinaldo Marcus Green has redeemed himself and although I think the decision to include him as director of the miniseries was HBO's, this time he does show that he has mastered the cinematic language. Because yes, ladies and gentlemen, We Own This is more cinematic than the movie King Richard, which does look like a television product. Artistic paradoxes that sometimes have no explanation hahaha.

The prestigious filmmaker along with Simon and Pelecanos are putting this story together in parts and using a fragmented narrative with jumps in time, it is easy to understand, but if you are a viewer who is used to a linear and basic series like Law and Order, I warn you that you may not like the miniseries, here you have to put a little on our part and pay attention, just that, pay attention to every detail and you will understand it easily. I don't know how the book it's based on is structured, but I'm sure Simon wanted to do it that way, to demand our attention, as intelligent viewers that we are. 

Talking about all the actors is a task that would lengthen the post unnecessarily, I was delighted to see some faces I had seen in The Wire, I felt a lot of nostalgia when I saw them, because I still remember them with their unforgettable characters from the other series. Some of them are older, but they overflow with talent in every appearance, however brief it may be.  I'm only going to give my opinion on three characters/actors.

**My God, Jon Bernthal eats everything in each of his scenes, this actor gets into the skin of the corrupt Sergeant Wayne Jenkins, from the time he graduates from the police academy to becoming the absolute master of the streets of Baltimore.**  His performance as a cop is wonderful, really believable, he is a heartless, unscrupulous, cheating, nasty , a repulsive character in every gesture, look and way of speaking, even his way of walking and his body work is to make us feel repulsion towards his character and everything he does.   I don't know, but some award has to be given to this actor whom I applaud standing.   I have seen on social networks some memes made with several of his scenes. I remind you something: this character exists in real life. Sad for the people who encountered this wretch. 

The other character I want to highlight is Detective Sean Suiter, played by actor Jamie Hector. I loved watching him play a Homicide cop, he is the hapless idealistic cop who by bad luck was assigned in the past in that special Jenkings division.  The past will come back to collect its debts, I was excited to see the actor, with a more human character who wants to make things right. A totally different character than the one he played in The Wire, where he was the fearsome Marlo Stanfield, who would be in charge of drug trafficking, I remember that his presence conveyed fear. 

The third and last character I will name is Nicole Steele, played by the British Wunmi Mosaku. Her character is the moral axis of the story, as she is the civil rights department official who, faced with the amount of abuses committed in the streets of the city, seeks an alternative, a solution, but she is only a dreamer who will crash against the great wall of bureaucracy and corruption. All is lost, none of those who have the power to make changes, have the intention to do so, they only seek their political and economic benefit.

**We Own This City is the chronicle of a decadent system, a lost battle that has left only pain and has no possible solution. It is a raw drama, difficult to digest, because the reality of our world is very difficult to see on screen. All the problems exposed in the miniseries continue to exist and get worse every day. Baltimore is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. It is a production that will shake them up, I have no doubt. It is a necessary miniseries.**

#### ¿Cuál es la trama? 












La historia principal gira en torno al sargento Wayne Jenkins, que comenzó a ascender en el Departamento de Policía de Baltimore hasta convertirse en el líder de una división especial para el rastreo de armas, escuadrón  destinado a la incautación de armas y drogas, pero esa división estaba podrida desde el principio y lo que era una fuerza especial que debía proteger a los ciudadanos, se convirtió en una entidad que robaba y cometía abusos de todo tipo contra todos. Al mismo tiempo, veremos cómo por accidente se inicia una investigación federal que sacará a la luz los trapos sucios de la policía, mientras los defensores de los derechos civiles intentan hacer cambios antes de que el nuevo presidente tome el control del país y los políticos locales no tienen la  capacidad para dar una solución. Todo lo anterior se desarrolla en unas calles en tensión porque el recuerdo de la tragedia de Freddie Gray esta latente . *Qué te parece, ¡una bomba nuclear! ¿Sigues dudando en verlo?*

*Hace unos meses te dije que no me había gustado la película King Richards, ¿recuerdas? Fui un poco duro con el director y realmente no me gustó su trabajo en esa película, y ahora estoy más convencido de que no tuvo total libertad en esa película.*  Pero ahora Reinaldo Marcus Green se ha redimido y aunque creo que la decisión de incluirlo como director de la miniserie fue de la HBO, esta vez sí demuestra que domina el lenguaje cinematográfico. Porque sí, señoras y señores, We Own This es más cinematográfica que la película King Richard, que sí parece un producto televisivo. Paradojas artísticas que a veces no tienen explicación jajaja

El prestigioso cineasta junto con Simon y Pelecanos van armando esta historia por partes y utilizando una narración fragmentada con saltos en el tiempo, es fácil de entender, pero si eres un espectador que está acostumbrado a una serie lineal y básica como Ley y Orden, te advierto que puede que no te guste la miniserie, aquí hay que poner un poco de nuestra parte y prestar atención, sólo eso, prestar atención a cada detalle y lo entenderás fácilmente. No sé cómo está estructurado el libro en el que se basa, pero seguro que Simon ha querido hacerlo así, para exigir nuestra atención,  como espectadores inteligentes que somos. 

Hablar de todos los actores es una tarea que alargaría el post innecesariamente, me encantó ver algunas caras que había visto en The Wire, sentí mucha nostalgia al verlos, porque aún los recuerdo con sus inolvidables personajes de las otras series. Algunos de ellos son mayores, pero desbordan talento en cada aparición, por breve que sea.  Sólo voy a dar mi opinión sobre tres personajes/actores.

*Dios mío, Jon Bernthal se lo come todo en cada una de sus escenas, este actor se mete en la piel del corrupto sargento Wayne Jenkins, desde que se gradúa en la academia de policía hasta convertirse en el amo absoluto de las calles de Baltimore.*  Su interpretación como policía es maravillosa, realmente creíble, es un desalmado, sin escrúpulos, tramposo, desagradable , un personaje repulsivo en cada gesto, mirada y forma de hablar, incluso su forma de caminar y su trabajo corporal es para hacernos sentir repulsión hacia su personaje y todo lo que hace.   No sé, pero algún premio hay que darle a este actor al que aplaudo de pie.   He visto en las redes sociales algunos memes hechos con varias de sus escenas. Les recuerdo algo: este personaje existe en la vida real. Lamentable para la gente que se encontró con este desgraciado. 

El otro personaje que quiero destacar es el detective Sean Suiter, interpretado por el actor Jamie Hector. Me encantó verlo interpretar a un policía de Homicidios, es el desventurado policía idealista que por mala suerte fue asignado en el pasado en esa división especial de Jenkings.  El pasado volverá para cobrar sus deudas, me emocionó ver al actor, con un personaje más humano que quiere hacer las cosas bien. Un personaje totalmente diferente al que interpretó en The Wire, donde era el temible Marlo Stanfield, que se encargaría del tráfico de drogas, recuerdo que su presencia transmitía miedo. 

El tercer y último personaje que nombraré es Nicole Steele, interpretado por la británica Wunmi Mosaku. Su personaje es el eje moral de la historia, ya que es la funcionaria del departamento de derechos civiles que, ante la cantidad de abusos que se cometen en las calles de la ciudad, busca una alternativa, una solución, pero sólo es una soñadora que chocará contra el gran muro de la burocracia y la corrupción. Todo está perdido, ninguno de los que tienen el poder de hacer cambios, tienen la intención de hacerlo, sólo buscan su beneficio político y económico.

*We Own This City es la crónica de un sistema decadente, una batalla perdida que ha dejado solo dolor y  no tiene solución posible. Es un drama crudo, difícil de digerir, porque la realidad de nuestro mundo es muy difícil de ver en la pantalla. Todos los problemas expuestos en la miniserie siguen existiendo y empeoran cada día. Baltimore es una de las ciudades más peligrosas de Estados Unidos. Es una producción que los sacudirá, no me cabe duda. Es una miniserie necesaria.*
