Have you ever been set up for failure by your manager?
Today I came into work and there were only three people on the lineup instead of the normal eight.

Tuesday is always a really busy day and today was no exception.

It seems our general manager decided to go on vacation for two weeks today instead of staying around and having the talk about my raise that we were going to have this morning.

Fantastic.

That isn't the worst part though.

No one really likes to have a lineup that is absolutely full of servers because it means no one will make money.

However having only three servers instead of eight on a busy Tuesday afternoon can only mean extreme trouble.

We had to go on a wait at 11:30 today which is extremely early to be going on a wait.

Everyone ran around like a maniac.

Instead of getting the normal 20% tip most people got closer to 10% because we were each had more tables and we could possibly handle.

I personally got yelled at by five different tables that were not my own.

One elderly lady grabbed my arm extremely hard and told me she was not accustomed to having to wait and she was going to order right now.

I told her she was welcome to go ahead and order and then I walked off.

I don't normally like to do that but it wasn't even my table and I had about a thousand things on my plate.

Of course this is the manager's fault because he knew that we were going to be busy but decided that he didn't need to get any more servers on the floor.

The general manager never even told anyone he was going on vacation either until the last minute.

At the end of our lunch today I told my senior service manager that I really hope we have more people on the lineup tomorrow.

He said...... "Why, what do you care?"

This to me just shows the disconnect of the some managers have from reality.

Having to work extra hard,  getting yelled at by other people's guests,  and also getting less tips because I'm so absolutely weeded out of my mind that I can barely even keep my head on does not make me happy.

When all was said and done I was never able to get my point across to the managers.

That sucks. Unfortunately this kind of behaviour from managers is all too common. It's in our hypercapitalist, egocentric culture. 
Those assholes are a sucess, supposedly. 
That is, they are a sucess in their careers, but they often fail as human beings.
We need to change our culture away from shallow values of profit, sucess, status and beauty, to a culture of empathy, compassion amd connectedness, to other human beings, and with nature.

That's a great comment kooshikoo.   One thing that most people don't seem to understand is that success as a human being means a lot more than the cultivation of these shallow values.

It may be that your general manager purposefully set up this mess to encourage you and your fellows to quit, rather than giving you your raise.  The problem with modern day bureaucrats is that they don't even have the will to perform their jobs.

I have been setup for failure and I have also set others up for failure as a manager.  
When I first became a manager I didn't know everything yet,  I still don't.
Just reading your post made me feel the culture at the restaurant doesn't make every employee understand tonight's diners are tomorrow diners.  Enough nights like the one you descibed and nobody will have to worry about being busy.  :)

Doesn't sound like a lot of fun, maybe you can keep trying to communicate why those nights are not good for anyone.
