Learning to take criticism is one most important skills you can have.
One of my managers is extremely brash.

 I get along with her very well, but many of my workmates have a real problem with the way she deals with things.

Positive coaching?  Sometimes.

She is a very busy person though. You can't always give someone the fantastic attitude that you would like to. Sometimes it's just about getting things done.

 I couldn't help but chuckle when earlier today upon asking her a simple question,  she replied that if I have time to ask her a question then surely I have time to do this thing,  and that thing,  and the other thing.

That wasn't true of course. I had no time at all,   but I know the way that she works and I know that she did not mean to be insulting.

However, there are many people I work with that think she is really rude. Is she rude? Maybe a little bit but I also know that she's very honest and that she has no ill will towards anyone.

Everyone has to learn to take a little bit of criticism. Especially when it is used in the almost facetious way that she uses it. I'm not saying she is never serious at all, but I don't personally take it as a big deal.

Some of the employees think she's really mean. They think that she's always coming down on them. The answer is that they shouldn't be late to work all the time.  

They shouldn't take things so seriously all the time either. They do need to do the work,  but they have to understand that since they are not the manager they are definitely going to be criticized once in a while.

It's a part of working. If you can't learn to take criticism,  then you should probably try to find a way to work for yourself. However, that's easier said than done.

Having said that though....

Learning to take criticism is one the most important skills you can have.

Many have got the very same problem with my boss as well, mainly because he criticises very _very_ harshly, doesn't care for reasons/explanations, and says your fault for all to hear (which is quite inevitable as we work in a group). However anyone who works with him for over a couple of years soon come to realise that's his way of pushing us to get better. And those who stay and get past the criticism do get so good, it's amazing.

Can't help but pity the newbies though. It can be quite tough.

It's the same way where I work. It's tough to be new but some people don't learn even though they've been there for a long time. I find that people that are often perceived as jerks are often not as bad as others make them out to be.  It's all about seeing things in the right position.

True words! The fact is most people believe critics are out to get them by only expressing the faults or negatives (per say). While this may be true for a number of critics, the ability to see past the criticism is a true skill which a lot of people don’t have not just in the workforce, but in life. 
Being able to convert or β€˜take’ the criticism usually ends up strengthening the receiver.
