With all the reviews and hype recently with the new *Super Mario 3D All Stars* for the **Switch**, I thought I'd check out the original *Super Mario All Stars* on the **Super Nintendo**. I wish I were playing the **Switch** version, but I don't have a **Switch**. I just have a crappy laptop I bought at Walmart three years ago for $99 running Linux Mint so I don't have much power. I can't even emulate **Nintendo 64** without it lagging, but I think that's just a bad emulation job. I remember I got it to work on a **PSP** and that only had a 333 MHz processor. Unlike the recently released *All Stars* they didn't just do a cheap emulation, but took the time to redo all the 8-bit Mario games into beautiful 16-bit. I honestly have never heard of this game and am half wondering if this is another Nelson Mandela quantum jump to another dimension thing. It was released in 1993 so it truly was a lost gem for me because this game is terrific. They really put in the artwork and attention to detail to recreate the EXACT original games, but display it at more than twice the resolution. Upgrading games from 8 bit to 16 bit is a lost art like the models that made the ships in the original *Star Wars*. It will just get fed into an AI and come out as trash today.

I wonder if mainstream acceptance of blockchain had come before gaming if Nintendo would've updated all original top rated **NES** games to 16 bit as long as you gave them the original or private key and maybe shipping costs. I purchased *GTA V* for the **PS3** and again for **PS4**. Will Sony make me pay again for the **PSV** version? Paying three and if you include PC, four or more times if you lost the disc. There may be some people who've bought **GTAV** five or more times. This is very unfair. As video game consumers we should DEMAND blockchain gets integrated to all gaming. If you lose the disc but still have the key then you'll be back in the game. What if the in money cash was real crypto like Splinterland's DEC? Gaming will not just be an obsession, but many people will play games as a job. Sure, some cool personalities can make it streaming or on YouTube, but if you could earn crypto IMMEDIATELY from the game we could have reverse arcades. Imagine going to a machine, kicking ass, then a bunch of coins coming out like a slot machine. OK it may never come to that, but blockchain and gaming are a marriage we've yet to really see and it's going to be a big deal. Sorry to go off topic on a blockchain rant. Let's get back to 16 bit Mario in 1993...

## *Super Mario Bros.* (1985)
![CF670C5B329B4D419F2D2DDD990D1295.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/jeremiahcustis/uGKqz7Bz-CF670C5B-329B-4D41-9F2D-2DDD990D1295.png)

I know this game like the back of my hand so I just played until I ran out of lives and moved on to the other games. It's too bad we can't play a 16 bit *Duck Hunt* too.

## *Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels* (1986)
![3D727A8436CC45C597F4D02E031AFB8E.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/jeremiahcustis/XFOX21pG-3D727A84-36CC-45C5-97F4-D02E031AFB8E.png)

This was really *Super Mario 2*, but it was too damn hard and Americans hated it so we never got to see this one converted from Japan.

The first time I played it was today and I hate it too. It should be called *Super Mario Fuck You*. If you have a controller and like suffering maybe you'll like it, but I couldn't make it past the third world using my keyboard. It's basically the same as *Super Mario Bros.* with ten times the chance of dying. They even have POISON mushrooms! No thanks.

## *Super Mario Bros. 2* (1988)

Just seeing the title screen I can hear the wonderful music in my mind. I could turn this game on and sleep like a baby to its tunes.

The update to 16 bit didn't feel so dramatic with this one since the original 8 bit was so colorful and well done already.

I was surprised I could defeat the first boss with a keyboard, but soon found it hard to survive.

## *Super Mario Bros. 3* (1990)

This was the King of Games for a long time. I first saw it in the movie *The Wizard* and thought it was the greatest thing ever.

When I first played the arcade version in Fred Meyer, I couldn't understand why my mom and sister didn't find it amazing too and made me quit after I died.

![CF6DFA3A267B4004A9255A732DE908FD.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/jeremiahcustis/KeB2aYA6-CF6DFA3A-267B-4004-A925-5A732DE908FD.png)

I ran into one of the red turtles and my mom was all, "Oh you died. Let's go!" "I've got more lives!" I assured her, but they didn't last long and I had to go back to my boring home with just an **NES** with the original *Super Mario Bros*., *Top Gun*, and *Captain Skyhawk*.

I was really happy to play this again in 16 bit. It looks really good. I couldn't get past the sixth world using the damn keyboard, but I had fun trying.

## Resources:
I ran Snes9x to emulate the game on Linux Mint and pressed PRINT SCREEN then ENTER to save screenshots while trying not to die controlling Mario with the clumsy keyboard.
