 Quick process of designing this dark panther & skull scene. A new project I had recently been working on, on and off over the past year. *** ***  Cycling through some concepts, layouts and other ideas. I was initially led towards a symmetrical layout but decided against it. *** ***  This started out as a tattoo design but I decided to do something else with it and further develop it. *** ***   Initial pencil drawing is almost done, The panther's face still needed some work, among other things. Part of the intent of this design was to play with contrast and light. The Panther is loosely placed to align the shadows of the skull. I love the transitions and process for this one. That gif image was sattisfying to look at. How the draft went through a lot of work before the final output and time spent putting on the details together. That's some dedicated right there. I like the spirals done on the back of the skull. It looks cool. Spirals, skulls and floral accents are my usual styles so I'm biased about like that part. :D

This is a great concept and even cooler execution of it, @jeremyrfk. Very much like the way the panther turned out, and that skull is amazing, too. I know it has nothing to do with it, but to me it gives off a Conan the Barbarian vibe, without Conan, obviously. :) Great art and the coloring just makes every element remarkable. And I enjoyed the use of the quotes after each stage of progress. All of it very apropos. Congratulations on the curie, too. Very much deserved.

Maybe it is the lighting or composition, I think I see what you mean about the Conan the Barbarian vibe though. I know Frank Frazetta an incredible artist did quite a few Artworks for the series, perhaps there is some influence there. Thanks for the kind words Glen.

yeah, I was thinking Frazetta. He usually had a woman or two along with the animal and Conan, but anyway, it seems like Frazetta could be influencing it. Of course, if you were originally going for some kind of tattoo, that could be it, partially, too. If I'm remembering correctly, the 80s had a lot of panther/big cat tattoos. And vans. :)

The idea of continuing something that started as a tattoo design is great, I liked the composition of the skull and the panther, the touch of the coffin was fantastic. The body of the panther looks bright and getting that when drawing is quite complicated, congratulations for the achievement.

You must be a wide reader to have known all of those quotes. The first one by Oscar Wilde is interesting. I myself did not realize that. But people usually have different takes on good dreams and nightmares. If it is good, they would say dreams come true. If it is a nightmare, the would say nightmares are opposite of what's going to happen in reality. How selective! It is good to see your progress with the in-between photos. I am still trying to decipher the relationship of the panther and the skull but I take it that the panther is death, the replacement of that faceless black creature with, what's that, sickle? Nice drawing you got there!

Hi @jeremyrfk, in your first sketch, I saw a lady figure in one of your sketch. In your initial plan you liked to sketch a lady and a panther? Your pencil drawing alone also beautiful. You have a very creative and imaginary mind. Skull with coffin together with a black panther. It made the whole drawing very mysterious and as if death is coming.. :) Your color with color pencil was beautiful, you knew how to shade the light portion. I need to learn more from you. Your color shading was great.

I like the whole concept of your creation, the way you took us through your work process. I can imagine initially when you have an idea and try to figure out how to put in place with experimenting on paper, the details, may be finish initial sketch, look at it critically and probably either to change it or to leave as a sketch and produce the final results. When we see the final results we never realise how much thinking and working process behind, everything looks nice and easy and we just get jealous about such wonderful skills, but in reality this is just hard working, going through experiments and reaching the aim. I love the composition, wonderfully worked out on anatomical features and also the details of your panther that is ready to attack brilliantly reflected.

Great illiustration! It's always nice to see the initial concept designs, a whole year for one illiutration is a long time, but that's how great pieces like this get created :) I also loved how you added a lot of quotes to this post. Looking at the progress of the illiustration and reading those powerfull quotes set a truly amazing vibe to the whole illiustration for me! ^^
