¿No has vivido la experiencia de hacer un papalote? Ven, te muestro la mía. A continuación te relataré mi experiencia como papalotero, ya que a pesar de tener como prioridad los estudios, me correspondió en mis tiempos libres ayudar a mi padre en la difícil situación económica que atravesaba como tantos en la década de los años 90 en Cuba.

Este relato estará dedicado a una parte del proceso que es la de obtención del penacho del Guin utilizado para armar el esqueleto del papalote. Mi padre por la razón expuesta tuvo que reinventarse, ya que su dedicación dejo de tener empleo por la escasez de materiales de construcción en su empresa, y siempre ajustado lo más posible marco legal, se decidió por dedicarse a un nuevo oficio, el de papalotero.

>This story will be dedicated to a part of the process that is obtaining the plume of the Guin used to assemble the skeleton of the kite. My father, for the reason stated, had to reinvent himself, since his dedication stopped having a job due to the shortage of construction materials in his company, and always adjusting the legal framework as much as possible, he decided to dedicate himself to a new trade, that of papalotero. 

Papalotero es aquella persona que se dedica a la elaboración y venta de papalotes, objeto de fabricación artesanal hecho de Guin (planta que crece a orillas del río), hilo, pegamento, papel y la creatividad artística de quién dibuja los más ocurrentes dibujos que lo embellecen, y que una vez terminado y colocado suficiente hilo a su guía y cola de tiras de tela se eleva por el aire hasta donde llegue el hilo que sujetas.

>Papalotero is that person who is dedicated to the elaboration and sale of kites, an artisanal object made of Guin (a plant that grows on the banks of the river), thread, glue, paper and the artistic creativity of who draws the most witty drawings that embellish, and that once finished and placed enough thread to its guide and tail of strips of fabric it rises through the air as far as the thread you are holding.

El proceso de su elaboración comienza por la búsqueda de los materiales mencionados, y de ellos la corona se la lleva precisamente la búsqueda del Guin ya que es un proceso de mucho esfuerzo y aventuras. Esta búsqueda comenzaba con la preparación de un buen alimento para almorzar ese día y sin aún salir el sol salíamos en la única bicicleta que teníamos en búsqueda de zonas de un alejado río que tenía buenas plantaciones silvestres de la planta Guin, pero como mejores tierras para sembrar son las que están a la orilla del río por la facilidad del agua para los cultivos era engorroso llegarles a todos sin poner bravo más de un agricultor pues encontrarlo significa perder el día pues el agricultor siempre está en movimiento.

Una vez llegado a las márgenes del río nos poníamos en función de la extracción del penacho de la planta de Guin, planta que puede alcanzar cerca de los 10 metros de altura en su fase adulta. El agricultor usa su tallo como vara para el proceso de secado de la hoja de tabaco, por lo que muchos expulsaban a quienes iban por el Guin ya que el procedimiento que utilizan es cortar la planta por donde le llegue el machete cortante. Mi padre conocedor de la importancia para el agricultor de esa planta de ingenio una herramienta que consistía en una bara seca de poco peso con una especie de garfio en la punta, garfio que atrapaba el penacho de la planta de Guin y con la mejor opción posible se flexiona la planta llegando el machete cortante a cortar el penacho que se busca, cortandolo y dejando libre la planta de Guin sin lesionarla. Este proceder fue del agrado de todos los agricultores de las márgenes del río por lo que hasta contentos se ponían cuando lo veían ya que la planta de Guin sin su penacho no era objeto de daño por quienes solo cortaban la planta para extraerle el penacho.

The farmer uses its stem as a rod for the drying process of the tobacco leaf, which is why many expelled those who went for the Guin since the procedure they use is to cut the plant where the cutting machete reaches it. My father, aware of the importance for the farmer of this sugar mill, a tool that consisted of a dry stick of little weight with a kind of hook at the end, a hook that caught the plume of the Guin plant and with the best possible option the plant is flexed, reaching the cutting machete to cut the plume that is sought, cutting it and leaving Guin's plant free without injuring it. This procedure was to the liking of all the farmers on the banks of the river, so they were even happy when they saw it, since the Guin plant without its plume was not harmed by those who only cut the plant to extract the plume.

El sol del avance del día, el calor, la carga que cada planta se hace más grande de penachos de Guin, el acercamiento de la hora de almuerzo y el agotamiento por el viaje en bicicleta poco a poco van pesando sobre los ánimos de continuar en la faena, solo aliviado por los continuos chapuzones en el río para refrescar con sus frescas aguas el agotado cuerpo que debía continuar. Y claro, el segundo mejor momento era el de almorzar, sentado a la orilla del río, con el agua acariciando las adoloridas piernas. 

>The sun of the advance of the day, the heat, the load that each plant becomes bigger of Guin plumes, the approach of lunch time and the exhaustion from the bicycle trip little by little weigh on the spirits of continuing in the task, only relieved by the continuous dips in the river to refresh with its fresh waters the exhausted body that had to continue. And of course, the second best moment was lunch, sitting by the river, with the water caressing the aching legs.

Una vez juntada la cantidad que permitía la bicicleta cargar nos retirábamos con inmensos deseos de llegar a casa para realizarnos lo que se pudiera llamar un autoingreso médico en el hogar pues el agotamiento salía por los poros. Al día siguiente comenzaba el proceso de secado del penacho de la planta de Guin, el la azotea de la casa, por una semana, ya que para la confección del papalote tenía que estar bien seco. Hasta acá la primera parte, que espero sea de agrado y motivación a todos. La siguiente será sobre la  presicion que se necesita en la manipulación de los materiales para su confección. Feliz día.
