# <center> La literatura estimula la idea del bien </center>

ESTOY PERSUADIDO de que la literatura favorece la idea del bien. Esta afirmación la digo basándome en mi experiencia como lector y escritor; pero principalmente como docente. Durante 20 años he trabajado, principalmente, con niños; y en algunos casos con jóvenes. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No me gradué de profesor de literatura; me licencié en Educación Integral, pero siempre he trabajado las asignaturas que se imparten en las escuelas, integrándolas con la literatura. La historia, la geografía, matemática, ciencia y tecnología, han sido la excusa para enseñar a los niños a leer literatura, a inventar historias y estimular su curiosidad. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No faltó en clase el cuento del origen de los números; de cómo el hombre primitivo, una especie de metro y algo de estatura, cazaba mamut; no se dejaron de visitar las bibliotecas cercanas para que leyeran acerca del telescopio, de los dinosaurios o de los inventos más perfectos del mundo: el martillo, el clavo, la tijera, el cuchillo. La geografía fue descrita después de ir a una loma, saltar, correr y dar vueltas como una roca que se desprende y arrastra todo. La historia primero fue inventada, la de Bolívar, la de la conquista, la del origen del lenguaje; más tarde cuando leímos cómo realmente sucedieron los hechos, comparamos y nos reímos porque nos pareció graciosa la que inventamos y muy aburrida la real. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Es buena la literatura porque provoca arrobamientos en el alma; estimula la fantasía en los niños; quienes sienten los cuentos y los viven identificándose con personajes; con Pinocho, con Peter Pan, con Harry Potter o el Gato con botas. La literatura provoca en los pequeños el deseo de ser buenos, sinceros y justos; los hace contrastar lo bueno de lo malo, lo justo de lo injusto, lo hermoso de lo feo; por eso es peligrosa la literatura para niños que no atiende a los tres principios de la creación dirigida a los pequeños; el ético, el estético y el de la esperanza. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Estas afirmaciones, repito, son producto de mi experiencia didáctica con niños, de mis lecturas y de mis propios escritos. Y cuando hablo de la idea del bien, no debe entenderse como lo que plantea Platón. Para este filósofo, las Ideas son entidades independientes de la mente humana; es decir, que, aunque el hombre no exista, las ideas existen y crean todas las cosas del mundo material y lo hacen a través de formas o paradigmas. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Me refiero a las ideas, pero en nuestro sentido ordinario; en otras palabras, a los pensamientos o conceptos que tenemos sobre las cosas. La literatura, como imagino ocurre con otras artes y disciplinas o cuando un padre enseña con el ejemplo, introduce en la mente del pequeño un concepto de lo bueno; levantarse, saludar, abrazar; si el niño ve esto, se le crean pensamientos de lo que es la cortesía; asimismo funciona la literatura, no es que hay que recárgala con lecciones porque para eso está la educación, pero hay que plantear bien el tema, el argumento, el conflicto y definir bien a los personajes.   

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Todo lo anterior es para decirles que he leído [*Rescate en Navidad*](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093XTN6JQ); una novela dirigida al público infantil, pero que de entrada nos atrapa por la manera en que el autor, [Tomás Jurado Zabala](https://ecency.com/@tomasjurado/posts), nos introduce en la historia. Estamos en presencia de un escritor que conoce los principios de la creación para niños y jóvenes; alguien que por su vocación dramatúrgica y por sus estudios de crítica teatral,  domina magistralmente el conflicto literario.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;La forma y el fondo o pensamiento se equilibran en una imaginería creativa espectacular que al terminar de leer la obra; uno quiere volver a acompañar a las dos niñas a liberar en secreto a la osa que tienen encerrada en el centro de extracción de bilis. Una osa que antes habían conocido en el circo y que les despierta el deseo de hacer el bien, de aventurase a rescatarla; por eso se preparan, pero no todo sale bien porque son descubiertas y secuestradas por el dueño del establecimiento quien no tiene la intención de devolverlas porque se acabaría su negocio. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lo mágico de esta historia es que sucede en el Día de Navidad y al final nos deja una gran lección edificante que en palabras del autor es esta. Cito:  *"Amar al prójimo como a sí mismo resultaría una frase incompleta si en ella no estuviera implícito el amor a los animales."*

# <center> Literature generates the idea of good </center>

I AM PERSUADED that literature favors the idea of good. I say this statement based on my experience as a reader and writer; but mainly as a teacher. For 20 years I have worked, mainly, with children; and in some cases with young people.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I did not graduate as a literature teacher; I graduated in Integral Education, but I have always worked with the subjects taught in schools, integrating them with literature. History, geography, mathematics, science and technology have been the excuse to teach children to read literature, to invent stories and stimulate their curiosity.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There was no shortage of stories in class about the origin of numbers; about how primitive man, a kind of meter and a bit tall, hunted mammoth; they did not fail to visit nearby libraries to read about the telescope, dinosaurs or the most perfect inventions in the world: the hammer, the nail, the scissors, the knife. Geography was described after going to a hill, jumping, running and turning around like a rock that detaches and drags everything. The history was first invented, that of Bolivar, that of the conquest, that of the origin of language; later when we read how the facts really happened, we compared and laughed because we thought it was funny the one we invented and very boring the real one.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Literature is good because it provokes ecstasy in the soul; it stimulates fantasy in children, who feel the stories and live them, identifying themselves with the characters; with Pinocchio, with Peter Pan or with Harry Potter. Literature provokes in the little ones the desire to be good, sincere and just; it makes them contrast the good from the bad, the just from the unjust, the beautiful from the ugly; that is why children's literature that does not attend to the three principles of creation addressed to the little ones is dangerous; the ethical, the aesthetic and the one of hope.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;These affirmations, I repeat, are the product of my didactic experience with children, of my readings and of my own writings. And when I speak of the idea of the good, it should not be understood as Plato's idea. For this philosopher, Ideas are entities independent of the human mind; that is, although man does not exist, ideas exist and create all things in the material world and they do so through forms or paradigms.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I refer to ideas, but in our ordinary sense; that is, the thoughts or concepts we have about things. Literature, as I imagine happens with other arts and disciplines or when a parent teaches by example, introduces into the child's mind a concept of what is good; getting up in the morning, greeting, hugging; if the child sees this, thoughts of courtesy are created; in the same way literature works, not that it has to be overloaded with lessons because that is what education is for, but the theme, the plot, the conflict and the characters must be well defined.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All of the above is to tell you that I have read *Rescate en Navidad*; a novel aimed at a children's audience, but that from the very beginning catches us by the way in which the author, Tomás Jurado Zabala, introduces us into the story. We are before a writer who knows the principles of creation for children and young people; someone who, because of his vocation as a playwright and his studies in theater criticism, masters the literary conflict.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Form and substance or thought are balanced in a spectacular creative imagery that at the end of reading the play; one wants to return to accompany the two girls to secretly free the bear they have locked up in the bile extraction center. A bear that they had previously met at the circus and that awakens in them the desire to do good, to venture to rescue him; so they get ready, but not everything goes well because they are discovered and kidnapped by the owner of the establishment who has no intention of returning them because it would end his business.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The magic of this story is that it happens on Christmas Day and at the end it leaves us with a great uplifting lesson that in the words of the author is the following. I quote: "To love thy neighbor as thyself would be an incomplete sentence if it did not imply love for animals".

Que lindo seria trabajar con niños y enseñarles el amor a la literatura. Me fascina todo lo que es infantil incluso ahora de adulta, hay muchas buenas joyitas. Esta no la conocía, pero me encantaría leer la historia. Es justo del tipo que me gustan, animales y niños. Gracias por compartirla.

Si bien concuerdo en que ayuda a la imaginación, difiero sobre los tipos de literatura, siento que ciertos tipos de literatura, más que estimular ideas, implantan semillas muy complicadas para el terreno no preparado, algo que siempre hay que considerar xD lo digo por que en mi casa me pusieron a leer cosas que se leian en la uni a los 5-10 años y eso era algo de lectura ligera :P pero mas que formar mi imaginario, me enseño lo grande del mundo y me dio imagenes claras que use como referencia por mucho tiempo...

Saludos, Jesús. Grato en saber de ti. No sé en qué sentido difieres de los tipos de literatura porque mi artículo se refiere exclusivamente a la literatura infantil. Tampoco entiendo lo de xD; por otra parte dices que en tu casa te pusieron a leer cosas que se leen en la uni (entiendo que es universidad) a los 5-10 años. ¿qué niño está en la universidad a esa edad?

Mis hermanos estaban en la Uni cuando yo tenía esa edad, con una década de separación y siendo autista, pasaba la mayoría del tiempo leyendo, por ende me fueron dando obras en el orden que ellos las adquirían, siendo mi hermano mayor un estudiante de musicología y en proceso de una maestría, ya que el de por sí se graduó de bachillerato a los 15, te puedes imaginar la influencia que fue... Básicamente me influenciaron bastante, al punto de que era el muchacho con el IQ mas alto de mi cole pero al mismo tiempo tenía las peores notas, simplemente no hacía nada en el cole, dormir xD Ah si preguntas, el mediano estaba entrando en la uni, física pura, también me enseñaba de sus libros, mas que todo ciencia ficción y algo de arte xD Pero bueno, igual alli te di un contexto.

Those are good argument about the importance of literature. I think that these days those ideas need to be emphasized more as we move to digital age where it can seem like children read less. But I think the medium is truly irrelevant than the idea itself which is to nurture critical thinking skill and many things through reading. Definitely a good write up!

Children's literature is an art that should be created with the same quality criteria as that of the adult public; I would even say that we should be more attentive because creating children readers is a social work that will powerfully benefit the country where those children live and the world.
