Foundation, was it a thuthfull adaptation of the books? [Eng | Spa]

Hello, Hive Book Club community!

Have you ever wondered, what is the point of an adaptation to the big or small screen? I always wonder about it, since Hollywood has some kind of wish to mess up with all of my favorite works, either video games, comic books, or **Literature**, and I'm just tired of it to a certain point as I am an avid reader, so many of my favorite books have become hit TV shows or mayor flops, and no, I'm not gonna talk about "A Song of Ice and Fire" demise in the hands of the HBO staff, I'm going to talk about Foundation and Apple TV+

![Foundation trilogy](https://images.ecency.com/DQmREFAqv9ZDtBuYKLmT699jxdVsX9sVxJV5mcgwz2mAg5S/foundation_was_it_a_thuthfull_adaptation_of_the_books.png)

> Made by me in [Canva.](https://www.canva.com/design/DAFS6UAH8uQ/2i3Suk6Ie9MH8tG7dDy1Jw/view?utm_content=DAFS6UAH8uQ&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton)
This novel series had a really hard time being adapted, it moved from HBO to Netflix, eventually landing in Apple TV+ hands, who bought the rights, and yet none of them wanted it, mostly because of its episodic narration and detached story line, this kind of stories are hard to adapt to a streaming series, but some producers just wanted to express their Ideals using these books as a medium, and we soon found a Foundation series.
In the books detached narration happened for a reason, as most of it works like a timeline into the story, for example, the small bits and pieces of the Encyclopedia Galactica are a reference that shows us the books like a "past" that is exposed to us in history books, that means that the books are made from the perspective of a second empire, where the reader is the civilian, and the foundation was a successful project.
Hollywood being the business it is, turns this adaptation to become part of the "agency" as you can easily feel the foreign hands push ideas into the premade world of the novels and this agency of the screenwriter is trying their best they can to screw up the plot and experiment like it is some kind of flesh made fan fiction, this is how would I describe most of the new wave of adaptations, not only the Foundation, from literature to streaming services, a lot of stories suffer manipulation and that is logical, but in this case I think is not as logical as we could accept, because it feels like they pushed the progressive agenda a bit too much.
**The foundation was already progressive**, most people don't realize, but from the point, the Mule is introduced in the second book, the main character is Bayta Darell, in the eyes of many is a white woman but in fact, her skin color was never specified in the books, when I first read her talking all I could picture was a strong black female lead, or maybe a mix like my mother, and that is how she built up in my mind.

![Foundation was already progressive](https://images.ecency.com/DQmPJiqXoQwtoigV7htsAkqUGGderN5aS53vHynhbbGkdTS/img_20221124_190005.jpg)

#
So when I first saw how they pushed Gaal Dornick to survive his era, I took my time digesting it, the real reason Gaal was of relative importance was that he was the bait of a large-scale plan, he was no religious extremist, and he was a Man, his role in the first cycle of the story was to found the basics of mutual understanding inside the foundations and die off, he was an utter unimportant character.
In the adaptation they created a new face for her, she was now a female, my issue was that this character originally had no relative importance, but making Salvor Hardin her daughter made things even more chaotic, as Salvor Hardin was just an opportunistic politician with a thirst for power in the books, he was a great strategist, but that was all you could point in his favor, he was also an utterly unimportant character in the big plan of Hari Seldon.
When the TV series made those changes to the book's lore, I was surprised yet not disappointed, race and gender had no purpose in the story of Isaac Asimov, in his eyes, the only character that had to stick to gender was the Mule, so Bayta soft hearth but hard exterior would make him fall for her and obsess, so many of these inclusions were unnecessary because they made non-relevant characters equally important as those that changed the world view of the Foundation and its galaxy as a whole.

![Surprised yet not disappointed](https://images.ecency.com/DQmZfPvv8nDZoLZNsfdThfkNYuq666N3YdLWu57MLuX95YJ/img_20221124_190347.jpg)

The emperor parts of the series were a pleasant surprise, most people hated its robot follower-mother figure, yet I found that Eto Demerzel's (Daneel Olivaw) passive presence in the story was the best move the adaptation could have as she is the most enigmatic character they could have possibly added to the story. While Eto's character having a gender change influenced the audience, it dint affect her inner programming or intentions, this made this adaptation shine in my eyes, at least they tried their best in making Demerzel's character an overly complex human-like robot with a grand quest to protect our kind and guide them towards Hari Seldon plan.
Not all the movements and inclusions of this story have been poorly made, in my eyes most of them had a good excuse behind them but had a poor implementation afterward, Isaac Asimov had no intentions of devoid his characters of family or sexual relations, he, would have no care a single beat into seen a queer Salvor Hardin because Isaac was forced as a Sci-Fi writer to write for his public (teenagers mostly), his hands were tied in a moral context, yet the Apple TV series dint had those moral bindings.
Foundation from Apple TV+ dint got a better hand in the deal, no matter how much you love the books, the biggest problem they have to adapt into a film or series is how they work like a bunch of split-off episodic developments, and how Hollywood desperately tried to keep its characters alive no matter what, was sore for my eyes, Issac was no stranger to pulling a death of a character in this saga, especially in the Trantor Cycle.

![Trantor Cycle way to handle characters felt like a killing field](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1518610424324-79ca316bd290?ixlib=rb-4.0.3&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1470&q=80)

So to summarise, they made a lot of gender changes and life extensions, but how did that change the already progressive agenda of the books? They pushed too hard towards a "bright and inclusive future", and left the past in the ruins of the empire, the books in the Foundation saga had a giant focus on being parallel to the rise and fall of the Roman empire, so regarding many of its details and signs of progress, they were just mirrors of our human story as a whole. Setting those mirrors as offset and forcing a religious theme into the main emperor "Brother Day" story made this Adaptation a bit harder to enjoy because it felt like they were mirroring another famous series like Game of Thrones and its politics, religious influence, and stuff like that, that neither of them had any relevance in the first book of the foundation until the born of the Traders and the party of Lathan Devers, so there is no point on adding that since Season one, they could just have waited and dropped it on Season two or whatever.

![Asimov while speaking of History and its role on his books](https://images.ecency.com/DQmYWVttoUCR22DZuRV99tPSUmqE8Cx8AMsMzt8VSyhZQJZ/isaac_asimov_9b6f52.jpg)

These adaptations that Hollywood does have their problems and Foundation is a perfect example of it, yet I have high hope for future adaptations, like the incoming **The Three-Body Problem** by Netflix, because most of the Sci-fi adaptations will have a hard time fitting into the TV series format, but difficulty does not mean to be crappy, an example of it would be The War of the Worlds 2019 Fox and Canal+ adaptation, that in my eyes it sticks to the soul of the books the best it can, being Hollywood and all.
These books had a special meaning in my childhood, imagining the big future mankind could have side by side with Asimov was my escape from bullying from being a functional autistic person, I read them over and over again, even during class, especially the first book and the short story collections my brother bought, this influenced me to a point that many of my writings and stories are influenced by Asimov style and my other favorite author, Lovecraft, yeah, a wild mix those two, imagine an endless empire of Cthulhu like beings.
As a big fan of the books, I found the Apple TV+ series both incredibly shifted and still very close to the source material in spirit, most people complain about a thing or two like its the end of the world but in my eyes, they only scored 70/100, they could have done better but they still fell a bit short on some of the source.
By avoiding the best parts of the first book and overly sticking to the worse characters it offered, they made something else entirely, as we can see with the anti-climatic end of the series, it is a clear example of the mess its recording was, maybe next season they can fix their mistakes, if there is one at all, all I can do is hope to see if they manage to fix what was broken and build up a greater season two, after all, Matrix 2 is better than the first part, so all is possible in this wild world we live in.
What are your thoughts on Hollywood book adaptations? Most of them in my eyes are hard pills to swallow yet Season one of Foundation had many changes that I could take In, but in the end, I still loved it, What do you think? Share it in the comments section below.

@stevenson7 ·
One thing is for sure, it is always difficult to pull off a movie adaptation of a book, and we have seen that in different forms. I'm a fan of Isaac Asimov too.

Now, I'm trying to read *one of us is lying* by Karen McManus. After seeing the Netflix piece, I'm only eager to see how the book would be

Oh well I haven't looked the series or the book before but a friend told me that both of them are great, she is a big fan of both works so I will take her words for a fact hahaha, big hug and thanks for passing by. Isaac never thought these works would be made into film, that is only logical if you look deep into it :)
