Juanito de los muertos, what a movie this one is, from what you can imagine with the name, I expected nothing, but what I got was a touch of spicy comedy that Cuban films have with a lot of black comedy and social criticism for both the Zombie genre and the Cuban regime, I can say I got a lot to handle with this film.
<br>
 
Juan of the Dead is that kind of soft and slow-building criticism that I love because what is best about Zombie movies is their original intention, to point out social behaviors that are failing our society as a whole, and there is little stuff that is properly working at Cuba as it is, so join me when we dive deep into this zombie horde and let's kill some Zombies.

As the phone rings we can hear a voice saying "Juan of the dead we kill your loved ones, how can I help you" and now you know this movie comedy is not for the soft-hearted, only a country like Cuba could have an entrepreneur charging people for killing zombies, but hey, those that you just can't get yourself around to kill, they do it for you, and what can I say, in time of crisis buy land, right?

That is the spirit of the movie, showing us how far would Juan go to support his daughter and his survival, as he has survived a lot of crises and special periods in the country, he is a natural-born survivalist and nothing can't stop himself from finding an "advantage", not even a Zombie apocalypse.  
<br>

So why do I point that out at first, because that from that point on, we only see Juan go from "Guatemala a guate-peor" he constantly devolves to a point that his partners just get surprised when he acts like a human being, and sacrifices some profits to help others, so we travel with Juan as he shows us eventually how he would sacrifice but never leave Cuba over anything else.

That deeply Cuban spirit that Juan has inside his bloody hearth is what makes this film beat, because, without it, it would be nothing but a Latin version of Shaun of the dead, yet is not, so I'm not going to compare those two, they are so wildly different and yet still both zombie comedies that they feel like brothers rather than a re-make, and that is what makes Juan de los muertos unique. Now that I mentioned Comedy, this film has a lot of scenes that made it special, but there is not a more fun one than the one of the "Sodomite" because he can't call an Officer of the army that way until the end of the movie, and I know that that joke alone had to take some time to pull because, in the old days of Cuba, it would have never been allowed to call a captain of the army a "Sodomite".

About socialism in Cuba, there is both a lot and too little to say, because poverty is what it is in whatever system you have, and if it is a Communism based one, there are a lot of possibilities that it's going to be worse, yet this film touched that with grace, there is one scene where there is a "kind of" forced recruitment into the army and the party, but it's soon cut off with an overrun of Zombies in the best comedy fashion there is. 
<br>

That comedy relief is what makes good transitions from social comment to action, it is what makes this film works and without it, it would be nothing but a shadow of its potential, not that is perfect, because it is not, but with fewer good jokes, it would be but a mascaraed of its current form.

The zombies in this film are remarkable, especially because they are called <i>Dissidents</i> most of the time, like they are somehow colluding with the Empire of the United States against the free government of Cuba, just look at that joke and stay still for a moment, it's the most savage joke in the film. 
<br>

These "dissidents" are just minding their own business and biting whoever comes close, and for the sake of the plot they came from the sea, meaning that they most likely came floating over from someplace else, perhaps there is some truth to the film, and they came from Miami... Who knows?

Every part of this film is built around a joke, every segment of it is based on order to make a sad reality into a joke, and I don't know who said it but "If you can't cry about it, then you can joke about it" seems like the motto of this film, is not about enjoying the reality but about enduring it and still live thought it for an eventual betterment in Juanito's case, so why not learn from him?
<br>

I could say this film is focused more on the comedy relief it gives than on anything else, it has both action and drama, zombies and communist, it has all it takes to be a failure, yet it made a great success at making me laugh like a maniac and see how the Social dilemma is still strong in Cuba.

We all have our way to grow, so I like to see myself and my life grow with the influence of films, Juan's way of seeing life is perhaps a little extreme but mirrors a lot with mine in Venezuela. He takes me to the point of actually see myself and decide, Do I want to stay here even if zombie overrun the country? The answer is a No. But what do you think? Juanito de los muertos, vaya película esta, por lo que se puede imaginar con el nombre, no esperaba nada, pero lo que obtuve fue un toque de comedia picante que tiene el cine cubano con mucha comedia negra y crítica social tanto para el género Zombie como para el régimen cubano, puedo decir que tengo mucho que manejar con esta película.
<br>

Juan de los Muertos es ese tipo de crítica suave y de construcción lenta que me encanta porque lo mejor de las películas de Zombis es su intención original, señalar los comportamientos sociales que están fallando en nuestra sociedad como un todo, y hay pocas cosas que están funcionando correctamente en Cuba como es, así que acompáñenme a sumergirnos en esta horda de zombis y matemos algunos Zombis.

Al sonar el teléfono se escucha una voz que dice "Juan de los muertos matamos a tus seres queridos, ¿En qué puedo ayudarte?" y ahora ya sabes que esta comedia cinematográfica no es para blandos de corazón, sólo un país como Cuba podría tener un empresario cobrando a la gente por matar zombis, pero bueno, a los que no te puedes poner a matar, ellos lo hacen por ti y qué decir, en tiempos de crisis compra tierras, ¿No?

Ese es el espíritu de la película, mostrarnos hasta donde llegaría Juan para apoyar a su hija y su supervivencia, ya que ha sobrevivido a un montón de crisis y períodos especiales en el campo, es un superviviente nato y nada le impide encontrar una "ventaja", ni siquiera un apocalipsis Zombie.

Entonces, por qué señalo eso al principio, porque a partir de ahí, sólo vemos a Juan ir de "Guatemala a guate-peor" va involucionando constantemente hasta el punto de que sus compañeros sólo se sorprenden cuando actúa como un ser humano y sacrifica algunas ganancias para ayudar a otros, así que viajamos con Juan mientras nos muestra eventualmente cómo se sacrificaría pero nunca dejaría a Cuba por nada.

Ese espíritu profundamente cubano que Juan tiene dentro de su corazón ensangrentado es lo que hace latir a esta película, porque, sin él, no sería más que una versión latina de Shaun of the dead, y sin embargo no lo es, así que no voy a comparar esas dos, son tan salvajemente diferentes y sin embargo ambas comedias de zombis que se sienten como hermanos en lugar de una vuelta a hacer y eso es lo que hace a Juan de los muertos única. Ahora que mencioné Comedia, esta película tiene muchas escenas que la hacen especial, pero no hay una más divertida que la del "sodomita" porque no puede llamar así a un oficial del ejército hasta el final de la película, y sé que ese chiste por sí solo tuvo que llevar algún tiempo para sacarlo porque, en los viejos tiempos de Cuba, nunca se hubiera permitido llamar "sodomita" a un capitán del ejército.

Sobre el socialismo en Cuba, hay mucho y poco que decir, porque la pobreza es lo que es en cualquier sistema que se tenga y si es uno basado en el comunismo, hay muchas posibilidades de que sea peor, sin embargo esta película tocó eso con gracia, hay una escena en la que hay una "especie" de reclutamiento forzoso en el ejército y el partido, pero pronto se corta con una invasión de Zombis en la mejor forma de comedia que existe.
<br>

Ese alivio de la comedia es lo que hace buenas transiciones del comentario social a la acción, es lo que hace que esta película funcione y sin él, no sería más que una sombra de su potencial, no es que sea perfecta, porque no lo es, pero con menos chistes buenos, no sería más que una mascarada de su forma actual.

Los zombis de esta película son notables, sobre todo porque se llaman Disidentes la mayor parte del tiempo, como si de alguna manera estuvieran coludidos con el Imperio de los Estados Unidos en contra del gobierno libre de Cuba, sólo miren ese chiste y quédense quietos por un momento, es el chiste más salvaje de la película.
<br>

Estos "disidentes" solo se dedican a sus asuntos y a morder a quien se acerque y por el bien de la trama vienen del mar, lo que significa que lo más probable es que vengan flotando desde otro lugar, quizás haya algo de verdad en la película, y vengan de Miami.... ¿Quién sabe?

Cada parte de esta película está construida en torno a un chiste, cada segmento de la misma se basa en el orden para convertir una triste realidad en un chiste y no sé quién lo dijo pero "Si no puedes llorar por ello, entonces puedes bromear con ello" parece que el lema de esta película, no se trata de disfrutar de la realidad sino de soportarla y seguir viviendo para una futura mejora en el caso de Juanito, así que ¿Por qué no aprender de él?
<br>

Podría decir que esta película se centra más en el alivio de la comedia que da que en otra cosa, tiene tanto acción como drama, zombis y comunistas, tiene todo lo necesario para ser un fracaso, sin embargo logró un gran éxito al hacerme reír como un maniático y ver como el dilema social sigue siendo fuerte en Cuba.

Todos tenemos nuestra forma de crecer, por eso me gusta verme a mi mismo y a mi vida crecer con la influencia de las películas, la forma de ver la vida de Juan es quizás un poco extrema pero se refleja mucho con la mía en Venezuela. Me lleva al punto de verme a mí mismo y decidir, ¿quiero quedarme aquí aunque los zombis invadan el país? La respuesta es un No. ¿Pero qué opinas tú?
