Alice held a cup of coffee in her hands, as she stared at the shivering brown liquid. After a while of compulsively hitting the control buttons with her thumb, she was able to stop staring at the door, but something else consumed her. The books on the cabinet were all wrong, she thought aloud: Margaret as usual. This left her suspended for a moment, she was only a few steps away from being able to fix that calamity, she just had to make an effort.

When she left her in bed resting, Margaret went to the kitchen and picked up the plate she had forgotten in the morning, the ants were still there, so she took the dirty plate to the dishwasher and saw how the water drowned the annoying invaders, she thought that maybe while they were drowning the ants were trying to scream, but she soon realized that it was a projection of her inner self.

Alice sostenía una taza de café entre sus manos, mientras  miraba fijamente el líquido marrón tembloroso. Había estado allí un largo rato, así que el café ya estaba frio, pero eso no le importaba a Alice, pues en realidad no pensaba tomarlo. Sostenía la taza con fuerza solo por la impresión de que si la soltaba todo a su alrededor se descoronaría.

La puerta del balcón estaba abierta y una brisa fría entraba arrastrándose por el piso hasta los pies de Alice, esto la descompensaba. Le había dicho tantas veces a su hija Margaret que cerrara la puerta del balcón, que le exasperaba lo distraída que podía ser. Tampoco se sentía bien yendo a la cocina, pues Margaret había olvidado levantar el plato de la mesa y algunas hormigas pequeñas ya se paseaban sobre los restos de comida, seguramente en poco tiempo llegarían unas cuantas moscas, pues con la puerta del balcón abierta, la casa estaba expuesta a cualquier plaga. Sin darse cuenta ya no apretaba la taza, tenía las manos adormecidas, por ello no había caído en cuenta. Pensó que podía ver una película mientras el tiempo pasaba, así que encendió la televisión. Pasaba los canales con el control remoto sin ver nada, toda su atención estaba sobre la brisa fría que entraba por la puerta del balcón, de vez en cuando miraba de reojo, aquella puerta francesa parecía una boca babeante queriéndola devorar.

Después de un rato golpeando compulsivamente los botones del control con su dedo pulgar, pudo dejar de mirar la puerta, pero algo más la consumió. Los libros en el mueble estaban mal, pensó en voz alta: Margaret como siempre. Qué tan difícil podía ser acomodar los libros, si estos estaban enumerados; pero no, para Margaret era una tarea imposible hacer las cosas bien. Esto la dejó suspendida por un momento, estaba tan solo a unos pasos de poder arreglar aquella calamidad, solo debía hacer un esfuerzo.

Apoyó los pies sobre la alfombra y se dispuso a ponerse de pie, por encima de aquel malestar insoportable que le producía el entorno patas arriba. Pero algo la dejó helada, en la mesa de centro, se paseaba inescrupulosamente una mosca grande, de esas que tienen los ojos azules. Alice cayó desplomada en el sillón y un grito dramático rompió su garganta.

Por casualidad, Margaret venia llegando y se encontraba cerca de la puerta. Corrió y encontró a su madre en un circo ridículo, la ayudo a incorporarse

-Hija, lo lamento mucho– dijo Alice con los ojos empapados.

-No es tu culpa que la vida te parezca una amenaza – dijo Margaret con un tono de resignación, mientras cerraba la puerta del balcón.

-¿Me llevas al cuarto? – pregunto Alice como si suplicara.

Margaret arrugo la cara, no le gustaba cuando su madre le hablaba así. No dijo nada y se dispuso  a ayudarla. Cuando la dejo en la cama descansando, Margaret se dirigió a la cocina y recogió el plato que había olvidado por la mañana, las hormigas seguían ahí, así que llevo el plato sucio al lava platos y vio como el agua ahogaba a las fastidiosas invasoras, pensó que tal vez mientras se ahogaban las hormigas trataban de gritar, pero enseguida se dio cuenta de que era una proyección de su interior.

Ordeno todo, hasta los libros en el mueble del televisor. Se sentó a descansar y encendió un cigarrillo, lloro un poco con la primera calada. Sabía que podía ordenar todo en la casa una y otra vez, que podía prever hasta lo más insólito para evitar un desastre, pero sobre todo sabía que no podía hacer nada para detener el desorden que su madre llevaba adentro.
