Regularly, my kind of reads is a mix of romance and a bit of black history. I stumbled across a page from this awesome book by Francesca Ekwuyasi on a friend's story. It piqued my interest immediately and I asked for the name. I was too excited to wait for a week before I could get the hard copy, so I went ahead to download the soft copy (soft copy books are so underrated btw)

## Overview
This 353 paged-book took me approximately 5 days to finish, yeah I’ve been really busy with a lot so it took me a lot longer to complete. Regardless, the book was an amazing read and kept me glued to it most of the time till I was done.
The author is a Nigerian lady, who has spent most of her life in Canada, her writing style is quite simple and easily comprehensible. From my little research, the story reflects her life, depicting the loneliness she felt when she first arrived in Halifax, Canada. Interestingly, this beautiful masterpiece happens to be her debut novel.
The very first thing that attracted me to this book was it’s unconventional title “Butter Honey Pig Bread” it seemed like all three words before ‘Bread’ were adjectives modifying it, but I got to realize it was a listing of the four elements,representing the four sections of the book. The title barely gave description to what and what not the book was about,it spoke a lot about food, so it encouraged me to find out by myself.

## Synopsis
Butter Honey Pig Bread tells a story of a family comprising a mother- Kambirinachi, who lived her whole life believing she is an Ogbanje ( spirit child)and her twin daughters Kehinde and Taiye, who used to be very close, before the “terrible thing” happens to Kehinde and tears them apart from each other. The story is told from the eyes of these three characters. One common thing among the trio, asides from sharing the same blood is that these three spend their life in fear of the consequences of some choices they have made.
One of the twins Kehinde, goes through a traumatic experience in their childhood, this single experience causes the twins to drift apart drastically, Taiye on the other hand lives in guilt for a larger part of her life,which stems from the traumatic experience. As a result of this, the twins flee to different continents to continue their lives after the event . She feels extremely lonely in the U.K, and resorts to sleeping around with random women for companionship.
Do you think the twins would ever get back to being as close as they used to be? Will Kambirinachi be able to conquer her kin who has tried everything possible to make her return to them ?
## My Review
For a debut novel, Francesca did amazing in telling this story. The cooking scenes in the book were so vivid that you could almost taste the meal from the pages of the book. The characters in this book were fully developed such that you could easily feel and understand where each of them was coming from, and why they acted the way they did. The writer tells the story by spanning through three continents in the pages of this book.
The author narrates the story from three perspectives, Kehinde, Taiwo and Kambirinachi . She begins with Kambiri’s story which began in the past. Being a spirit child meant her spirit had long lived in different bodies and was as a matter of fact, habiting her body for the meantime.
>“Kambirinachi hadn’t visited Lagos in her present incarnation, but she remembered it vividly. She had seen it many times. One time before before, she borrowed the body of a taut and agile dancer at Fela’s Shrine in Ikeja.”

Kambirinachi fights her Kin with all she could, she struggles to remain alive because of her loved ones ; her dad, her husband , her baby and her twins. Even though this decision cost her loved ones. She suffers from grief and constant battling with her kin which makes her appear insane and mentally ill even to her children. Despite everything I loved Kambiri’s personality a lot, even though she seemed strange from the onset, she knew a lot of things happening and tried to salvage situations in her own way, like when she stopped Taiye from committing murder.
Taiye on the other part, was initially the very quiet one who always looked out to her twin to speak for her, she had realized earlier while they attended an All-girls boarding school that she was gay, but couldn’t come out while in Lagos, after the ‘bad thing’ happened, she fled to the United Kingdom alone, leaving her sister behind as the were no longer in talking terms. Taiye felt so much loneliness while she was away and wrote several letters to her sister, but never mustered courage to send them to her.
Much later, Taiye moves to France where she learns French and learns to cook as well. Later on she moves to Halifax, Canada, here she began seeing apparitions of her sister and the lady. Taiye used cooking as her coping mechanism as a means to stay away from her sister’s confrontation while the returned to Nigeria. While in all these continents, Taiye resorted to finding companionships in the arms of random women and managed to fall in out of relationships with them from time to time.She lives in denial and loneliness for most part of the book, despite trying to seek companionship from these ladies.
I understood Taiye was in a lot of pains especially from being estranged from her twin, but honestly, I feel she went to extreme by sleeping around with anybody just to find ‘companionship’. I loved her character very much as well, even though she had her flaws as well. I fell in love with her cooking a million and one times, and I even plan on trying out some of her recipes soon (lol). And I loved the fact that no matter how much she ate, it didn’t show in her body. I find myself being so much alike with this character.
Finally, Kehinde; she was the restrained one, she used to be the expressive one amongst the duo, before the ‘bad thing’ happened to her, she leaves Lagos a year after her sister does, to Montreal, Canada. Even though she already had citizenship in the U.K. while away, she begins painting just like her mum, Kambirinachi and refuses to reply to her sisters calls, texts or mails. I really wouldn’t blame her for the resentment, I would have done the same if I were in her shoes. She gets involved in few romantic relationships while in Montreal, and later gets married to her Moroccan lover.
She gets hold of the letters Kehinde has been writing to her since their separation after one of Taiye’s exes bundles them up and sends the letters across to her. It is through her eyes we get to read the content of these letters. I sympathize the most with Kehinde, sometimes in the book she gets jealous of her sister who seemed to have everything going well for her like her really beautiful eyes, perfect body size, kitchen prowess, likeable personality etc.
Asides from the trio, we experience a few more dramas from the minor characters, which come together in making this book an interesting read. If you are a lover of fiction about women and their lives or cooking, then you would definitely love this book. I would rate it an 8/10.

Regularmente, mi tipo de lecturas es una mezcla de romance y un poco de historia negra. Me topé con una página de este increíble libro de Francesca Ekwuyasi sobre la historia de un amigo. Me llamó la atención de inmediato y le pregunté por el nombre. Estaba demasiado emocionado como para esperar una semana antes de poder obtener la copia impresa, así que seguí adelante para descargar la copia electrónica (los libros impresos están muy subestimados por cierto)

## Visión general
Este libro de 353 páginas me tomó aproximadamente 5 días para terminar, sí, he estado muy ocupado con muchas cosas, así que me tomó mucho más tiempo completarlo. De todos modos, el libro fue una lectura increíble y me mantuvo pegado a él la mayor parte del tiempo hasta que terminé.
La autora es una dama nigeriana, que ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida en Canadá, su estilo de escritura es bastante simple y fácilmente comprensible. A partir de mi pequeña investigación, la historia refleja su vida y describe la soledad que sintió cuando llegó por primera vez a Halifax, Canadá. Curiosamente, esta hermosa obra maestra resulta ser su primera novela.
Lo primero que me atrajo de este libro fue su título poco convencional "Butter Honey Pig Bread". Parecía que las tres palabras antes de 'Bread' eran adjetivos que lo modificaban, pero me di cuenta de que era una lista de los cuatro elementos, que representan las cuatro secciones del libro. El título apenas describía de qué se trataba el libro y de qué no, hablaba mucho de comida, así que me animó a averiguarlo por mi cuenta.

## Sinopsis
Butter Honey Pig Bread cuenta la historia de una familia compuesta por una madre: Kambirinachi, que vivió toda su vida creyendo que era una Ogbanje (niña espiritual) y sus hijas gemelas Kehinde y Taiye, que solían ser muy unidas, antes de que "la cosa terrible ” le sucede a Kehinde y los separa el uno del otro. La historia se cuenta desde los ojos de estos tres personajes. Una cosa común entre el trío, además de compartir la misma sangre, es que estos tres pasan su vida temerosos de las consecuencias de algunas decisiones que han tomado.
Una de las gemelas Kehinde pasa por una experiencia traumática en su infancia, esta sola experiencia hace que las gemelas se separen drásticamente, Taiye, por otro lado, vive en la culpa durante la mayor parte de su vida, que se deriva de la experiencia traumática. A raíz de esto, las gemelas huyen a distintos continentes para continuar con su vida tras el suceso. Se siente extremadamente sola en el Reino Unido y recurre a acostarse con mujeres al azar para tener compañía.
¿Crees que los gemelos alguna vez volverán a ser tan cercanos como solían ser? ¿Podrá Kambirinachi conquistar a sus parientes que han hecho todo lo posible para que ella regrese con ellos?
## Mi reseña
Para una novela debut, Francesca lo hizo increíble al contar esta historia. Las escenas de cocina en el libro eran tan vívidas que casi podías saborear la comida de las páginas del libro. Los personajes de este libro se desarrollaron por completo de tal manera que fácilmente podías sentir y comprender de dónde venía cada uno de ellos y por qué actuaban de la forma en que lo hacían. El escritor cuenta la historia recorriendo tres continentes en las páginas de este libro.
El autor narra la historia desde tres perspectivas, Kehinde, Taiwo y Kambirinachi. Ella comienza con la historia de Kambiri que comenzó en el pasado. Ser una niña espiritual significaba que su espíritu había vivido durante mucho tiempo en diferentes cuerpos y, de hecho, estaba habitando su cuerpo mientras tanto.

Kambirinachi lucha contra sus parientes con todo lo que puede, lucha por mantenerse con vida por sus seres queridos; su papá, su esposo, su bebé y sus mellizos. A pesar de que esta decisión le costó a sus seres queridos. Ella sufre de dolor y lucha constante con sus parientes, lo que la hace parecer loca y mentalmente enferma incluso para sus hijos. A pesar de todo, amaba mucho la personalidad de Kambiri, aunque parecía extraña desde el principio, sabía muchas cosas que sucedían y trataba de salvar las situaciones a su manera, como cuando impidió que Taiye cometiera un asesinato.
Taiye, por otro lado, fue inicialmente la muy tranquila que siempre miraba a su gemela para hablar por ella, se había dado cuenta antes, mientras asistían a un internado para niñas, que era gay, pero no podía salir mientras estaba en Lagos, después de que sucedió lo 'malo', huyó sola al Reino Unido, dejando atrás a su hermana, ya que ya no se hablaban. Taiye sintió tanta soledad mientras estaba fuera y le escribió varias cartas a su hermana, pero nunca reunió el coraje para enviárselas.
Mucho más tarde, Taiye se muda a Francia, donde aprende francés y también aprende a cocinar. Más tarde se muda a Halifax, Canadá, aquí comenzó a ver apariciones de su hermana y la dama. Taiye usó la cocina como su mecanismo de afrontamiento como un medio para mantenerse alejada de la confrontación de su hermana mientras regresaban a Nigeria. Mientras estuvo en todos estos continentes, Taiye recurrió a encontrar compañía en los brazos de mujeres al azar y logró romper con ellas de vez en cuando. Ella vive en la negación y la soledad durante la mayor parte del libro, a pesar de tratar de buscar compañía. de estas señoras.
Entendí que Taiye tenía muchos dolores, especialmente por estar separada de su gemela, pero, sinceramente, creo que se fue al extremo al acostarse con cualquiera solo para encontrar 'compañía'. También amaba mucho a su personaje, aunque también tenía sus defectos. Me enamoré de su cocina un millón de veces, e incluso planeo probar algunas de sus recetas pronto (risas). Y me encantó el hecho de que no importaba cuánto comiera, no se notaba en su cuerpo. Me encuentro muy parecido a este personaje.
Finalmente, Kehinde; ella era la comedida, solía ser la expresiva entre el dúo, antes de que le pasara 'lo malo', se va de Lagos un año después que su hermana, a Montreal, Canadá. A pesar de que ya tenía la ciudadanía del Reino Unido mientras estaba fuera, comienza a pintar como su madre, Kambirinachi, y se niega a responder las llamadas, los mensajes de texto o los correos electrónicos de sus hermanas. Realmente no la culparía por el resentimiento, habría hecho lo mismo si estuviera en su lugar. Se involucra en algunas relaciones románticas mientras está en Montreal y luego se casa con su amante marroquí.
Ella se apodera de las cartas que Kehinde le ha estado escribiendo desde su separación después de que uno de los ex de Taiye las empaquete y se las envíe. Es a través de sus ojos que podemos leer el contenido de estas cartas. Simpatizo más con Kehinde, a veces en el libro se pone celosa de su hermana, que parecía tener todo bien para ella, como sus ojos realmente hermosos, tamaño corporal perfecto, destreza en la cocina, personalidad agradable, etc.
Aparte del trío, experimentamos algunos dramas más de los personajes secundarios, que se unen para hacer de este libro una lectura interesante. Si eres un amante de la ficción sobre mujeres y sus vidas o la cocina, definitivamente te encantará este libro. Yo le daría un 8/10.
