Harvesting Cassava Plus A Clean Up.

One of the happiness of a gardener is that when their plants are ready to harvest. There are two scenarios when it comes to harvesting a plant, a good one and sometimes a bad one if there's an unwanted problems but let's not talk about the bad one since what we had last friday was a good harvest.

As you can see in the photo, those are the cassavas that I harvested. It's not that much but I can say that it's already a lot since it just came from the two stems of cassava that I planted.

To be honest I had a hard time harvesting those because the grasses were already tall. I was also cautious since there might be snakes hiding in there. I used a bolo that I sharpened to clear off those grass and also to dig up those cassavas that's hiding in the soil.

I felt tired after clearing up those greens but it faded as I saw the signs that my plant produced a lot of it. I began to dug up the sticky soil. My hands got dirty and it's okay. It doesn't lessen me as a human being anyway.

I continued to dig to reveal more of the cassava. As you can see in the photo that they are long and you may not see it as big in there but in actual they got a girt just like to my hands. As I dig and dig, they just keep on popping up. My heart was overflowing with joy as I did it. What a blessing. With those cassavas that I harvested, it can save us from one meal or two already. We can consume it as a substitute for rice. We're doing it here in the province and I learned it from my grandparents. A survival tip that never gets old.

You may notice that the sizes of the cassava are not the same and my guess is that it'a because of the overflowing water before when there's still water in our rice field. The place where I planted it is just beside it so maybe that was the cause and those tall grasses also who snatched all the nutrients that are meant for the cassavas.

I only harvested the ones that's good to go and just cleaned up the surroundings of the other plants. I also replanted the the stems where I got the one I harvested for them to develop cassavas again. They said here that you musn't replant it anymore since it will not be able produce cassavas but from my experienced of planting and harvesting it, what they're saying is not valid to me.

After harvesting those cassavas, I began to clear off the grass within the stems of my banana plant also. From the looks of my banana, I'm not happy with the progress of their growth since it's been a long time already. Maybe the grasses around it caused it also or maybe the soil which is always wet just like what it did to the cassava. Now that there's no more water from the rice field, let's see how they grow.

I planted also another set of it's stems on the free spaces and I did it because of the opportunity that's been given to me. Also my birthday is coming up next year so it's a good gift to myself.

After I finished all of the things that are meant to be done there, we already go home for us to clean those cassavas, boil them and eat them while dipping it in a little bit of sugar. hihi

happy harvesting cassava friends, I really like cassava like that. One of the easiest food products to process in this world, even just burning it tastes very delicious.

I think too ji but I already wounded it and once it is wounded, that area will the the start for the cassava to be prone in diseases that can cause serious damage to the crop later on.huhu

I can relate and remember those days how many times we were saved by it. My father used to plant a lot as we always ran out of rice, lol.
Ah those days...
Now it makes me somehow sad. It's been years since the last time I harvested cassava. Tatay was now old and could no longer manage to plant, you know, aching problems if those knees and bended.

Diba ate lhes, having those cassava in oir garden is really a life saving. A lot of memories to remember pa. Oh ..missed my lolo also who taught me on how to plant it.
They are really prone to those kind of things na when they are old.
