So, you’ve got a blog, and now you want to take it to the next level. Well, you’re definitely going to need a media kit for that. Why? It’s one of those little details that will set you apart from the crowd, and let me tell you, once you’ve made it, it will be your best friend.

If you’re not fully sure what a media kit is, it’s an important document that shows sponsors and other big guys who you are, why you’re awesome, and why they need to be interested in you. It’s kind of like having a pro dating profile where you show off your best features. Essentially, it’s a marketing document and your chance to make an amazing first impression.

What does that mean? It’s going to take a little work to make this happen, as you’re going to want something that looks glossy and professional! After all, you want this to open new doors for you, so it needs to showcase who you are, your best talents and of course, all in one sexy package. It will also save you a ton of time, which is great if you’re tired of long, boring email exchanges that never go anywhere… which sounds pretty rad to me.

First off, you’re going to need a good photo of yourself, along with your logo. Don’t skimp on this and go with a pro headshot if possible. You’ll also want to showcase some of the best photos and posts from your blogs, along with visible ad space so people can see where they can advertise their business.

Don’t be shy and share numbers – page views, unique visitors, demographics, traffic sources, and all that stuff: people use this stuff to make decisions, so highlight all your best points like you would your figure in a dating profile. 

Next, you will want to create a good personal impression of yourself with a short “about me”. Talk a little about yourself (personal details are OK here), and try to build a connection. Here’s where your headshot should standout, so flaunt your gorgeous green eyes or whatever your best feature is – but do try to keep it short and sweet.

After this, give people the elevator pitch on your blog – talk about the theme you’re in, the topics that get the most readership, any regular events you host, and which niche you’re in. Let potential sponsors know what they could be signing up for. 

Statistics are also important, and you need to update this often – your Google Analytics has all the data you need, and the data that akes those final judgements happen. Consider updating this every few months. Some people do return after a while to check for this, so although it is a deathly dull commitment, it can and will pay off in the long run. If you’re honest, it shouldn’t take much longer than an hour, which isn’t too bad for something you have to do every 90 days or so. 

Photos are essential for keeping people interested. Long gone are the days when we all happily read reams of text with no visual stimulation. Now, you need stuff that pops, and photos from your blog is ideal. Add a little personality and color, but most of all, make it exciting to look at. 

Don’t forget – link to your social media accounts too. As these are already set up (you have done that, haven’t you?) it’s very easy to slot them in. Now, around about this point you’ll want to start listing your T&C for sponsorship.

What will you do? What won’t you do? What are your rates? How much is ad space? What are your payment policies? Are there any time frames? Those are the bare basics, and you’ll likely have more that aren’t in this list. Be sure to include it all here to give your sponsors a good idea of what they’re looking at. 

Once all that’s said and done, double down on your CTA and invite them to get in touch with you – tell them to email! This doesn’t have to be sophisticated, it just needs to let them know how they can get started. 

Now that you’ve got all the nitty-gritty details down and a pretty swanky media kit file ready – this should only be around 2 pages – it’s time to proofread. Yes, this is a super boring job, but you can always hire a professional to cast an expert eye over it. The last thing you want is for a typo to ruin the entire thing (just as “I was bored and raised in New York” – ouch!). 

Once you’re absolutely sure that everything is just so, then you simply need to transform it into a PDF. Do NOT send it out in MS Word: that simply looks unprofessional, and anyone can alter your details. Not good…

It’s not hard to make a media kit, but it can be time-consuming. That said, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages, and once it’s prepared, it has a minimal time cost to keep it updated. At the same time, it shows sponsors that you’re a real pro and opens up doors to more lucrative opportunities. Worth it? You bet!
