Steemit is just about one month since the July 4th beta release and already I have lost count of the number of updates, just in the last 2 weeks to the steemit.com site. Clearly many things are still not there, but at this rate it seems it will be pretty complete in a month or two. I never really did anything with reddit/facebook. Does anybody know about how often they were updating their websites during their early days? When was their early days?

don't know about that but in the later days now, FB is often updating their android app and each time bloating it more and more. That's something I find annoy. FB android needs it's own browser? Then, FB force you to use their messager. Then, there's this Moments thing which I care not about. I heard on people so annoyed with the app, they uninstailled it totalling and access FB from the phone browser.

I was there during the early years of Reddit. The progress was painfully slow. It took several years for the site to be usable. Even now, it is missing many requested features. I'm pretty amazed at how rapid the development for Steemit is. Usually rapid development means shoddy polish and many bugs, but that's not the case either.
