**P**art of the land of our houses consists of large warehouses whose construction dates back more than 70 years... There, my grandfather, my father, my eldest son and I have stored "almost anything possible to store" (as my mother says)... My grandfather died in the 80's, my father about 5 years ago and my eldest son has been living out of the country for almost a decade. This makes me "The only custodian of this crazy corner full of old things"... Sometimes I come in here and stop, I've always wanted to hire someone to clean it all out and put it on a truck to be taken to the dump... But every time I want to do this, I end up looking at everything in there and taking pictures of it... So it happened again today...

>**P**arte del terreno de nuestras casas consta de grandes depósitos cuya construcción data de más de 70 años atrás... Allí mi abuelo, mi padre, mi hijo mayor y yo, hemos guardado "casi cualquier cosa posible de guardar" (como suele decir mi madre)... Mi abuelo murió en los 80, mi padre hace unos 5 años atrás y mi hijo mayor vive en el exterior desde hace casi una década. Esto me convierte "En el único custodio de este loco rincón repleto de cosas viejas"... A veces entro aquí y me detengo, siempre he querido contratar a alguien que haga una limpieza de todo esto y lo coloque en un camión para ser llevado al basurero... Pero cada vez que deseo hacer esto, termino mirando todo lo que hay allí y haciendo fotos de esto... Así ha sucedido hoy nuevamente...

Dad's old helmet seems to shine above everything else in the depot of old things... Dad worked for many years as a communications technician for "Venevisión", a national TV company... I remember seeing him with his uniform knickers and that helmet on.... Gosh, for me it was like seeing a superhero!... I still wear that helmet to work at home sometimes.... I can't believe he's been with us for more than 40 years...

>El viejo casco de Papá parece brillar por encima de todo en el deposito de cosas viejas... Papá trabajó durante muchos años como técnico de comunicaciones para "Venevisión" una empresa de TV nacional... Recuerdo verle con sus bragas de uniforme y ese casco puesto... ¡Cielos, para mi era como ver un súper héroe!... Yo sigo usando ese casco para trabajar en casa algunas veces... Me parece increíble que tenga más de 40 años con nosotros...

Over the years tools of all kinds accumulated. Dad liked to do a lot of things like carpentry, painting (oil and chalk), wood carving, auto mechanics and anything household electrical... So I have tools for just about everything here in this old place!... Plus, my son and I also follow the tradition of learning how to do things at home on our own... This is a very special place, there on one wall I'm looking at my grandfather's old hoe, with which he used to work in the garden of this house...

>A lo largo de los años se acumularon herramientas de todo tipo. A Papá le gustaba hacer muchas cosas como carpintería, pintar (al oleo y con tiza), tallar madera, mecánica automotriz y todo lo que fuese electricidad del hogar... ¡Así que tengo herramientas para casi todo aquí en este viejo lugar!... Además, mi hijo y yo también seguimos la tradición de aprender a hacer las cosas en casa por nuestra propia cuenta... Este es un lugar muy especial, allí en una pared estoy viendo colgado el viejo azadón de mi abuelo, con el solía trabajar en el jardín de esta casa...

My first colour TV (my parents gave it to me on my birthday in 1989), the old speaker that Dad used to listen to tangos, the famous "emergency lamp" that was placed anywhere to light it improvised... No wonder my mother says that we don't throw anything away here! hahaha :))

>Mi primer TV a colores (me lo regalaron mis padres en 1989 en mi cumpleaños), La vieja corneta que usaba Papá para escuchar tangos, la famosa "lampara de emergencia" que se colocaba en cualquier lugar para iluminarlo improvisadamente... ¡Con toda razón mi madre dice que aquí no tiramos nada a la basura! hahaha :))

Dad's huge wheelbarrow (you had to be quite an athlete to move that thing full of sand)... The little musical instrument (called "cuatro") which my son never learned to play despite taking private lessons for it... Ah yes, my father's old ice skates!... Dad bought them when he was very young, when started an ice skating rink at the Humboldt Hotel (in Caracas, where my father was from)... I remember going there a couple of times when I was very young in the late 70's, but Dad didn't use those skates, because in those years they were already renting better ones there...

>La enorme carretilla de Papá (había que ser todo un atleta para mover esa cosa repleta de arena), el pequeño instrumento musical (llamado "cuatro") el cual mi hijo nunca aprendió a tocar a pesar de recibir clases privadas para su uso... ¡Ah sí, los viejos patines para hielo de mi Padre!... Papá los compró siendo él muy joven, cuando comenzó a funcionar una pista de patinaje sobre hielo en el Hotel Humboldt (En Caracas, de donde era nativo mi padre)... Recuerdo haber ido un par de veces siendo muy chico a finales de los 70, pero Papá no usaba esos patines, pues en esos años ya alquilaban unos mejores allí...

When I was a newborn, my mother used to weigh me using that little Italian scale!... And it still works perfectly!... Holy cow! :)

In the mid 80's I was the "luckiest teenager in town" speeding through the streets and mountains on my Suzuki TS 250!... And several times I got my head kicked in the ass on that lovely noisy thing!... Poor girl, she's been waiting for my "restoration project" for almost 40 years... :(

>¡A mediados de los 80 yo era el "adolescente más afortunado del pueblo" yendo raudo por las calles y montañas en mi Suzuki TS 250!... ¡Y varias veces me partí la madre dándome de porrazos sobre esa cosa ruidosa y encantadora!... Pobre chica, lleva casi 40 años esperando por mi "proyecto de restauración"...  :(

Look who's there hidden among many old artefacts... My Grandma Olimpia's old sewing machine!.... Good heavens, I remember when I used to wait until my grandmother was not at home, so I could rummage through that interesting device.... I was about 5 or 6 years old! ;

>Miren quien está allí escondida entre muchos artefactos viejos... ¡La vieja máquina de coser de mi Abuela Olimpia!... Santos cielos, recuerdo cuando esperaba a que mi abuela no estuviese en casa, para poder hurgar en ese interesante aparato... ¡Yo tenía unos 5 o 6 años! ;)

There is the first " electrical appliance" that my wife and I bought together... "A Philips radio and CD + Cassete player"... It was the 90's, we were a newly married couple in our twenties and we went together to Valencia (the capital of the state) to buy it, we went by bus because we didn't have a car yet, and back on the bus, we put batteries in it and listened to it at high volume while the other passengers (many of them our acquaintances) laughed looking at us... Yes, indeed, this is a corner full of memories...

>Allí está el primer "electro doméstico" que compramos mi esposa y yo juntos... "Un radio y reproductor de CD + Cassete  Philips"... Eran los años 90, eramos una pareja de veinteañeros recién casados y fuimos juntos a Valencia (la capital del estado) a comprarlo, fuimos en autobús pues aún no teníamos auto, y de vuelta en el autobús, le colocamos baterías y lo escuchamos en alto volúmen mientras los otros pasajeros (muchos de ellos conocidos nuestros) se reían mirándonos... Sí, ciertamente, este es un rincón repleto de recuerdos...

There are many more things in this repository of old things, I think I could spend days here remembering things and taking pictures... I surely will. After all, it is certain that all these "***peroles viejos***" will remain here even after I will no longer be in this world... I don't think my son will ever come back to live in Venezuela again and here I only have my youngest daughter who will surely have to deal with this crazy "collection of memories" one day... In the meantime, I will continue to delay indefinitely my projects of vacating these spaces... Anyway, no one seems to really need them to be empty!.... :)

>Hay muchas cosas más en este depósito de cosas viejas, creo que podría pasarme días aquí recordando cosas y haciendo fotos... Seguramente lo haré. Después de todo, es seguro que todos estos ***"peroles viejos"*** permanezcan aquí incluso después de que yo ya no esté en este mundo... No creo que mi hijo retorne a vivir a Venezuela nunca más y aquí solo tengo a mi hija menor a quien seguramente le tocará lidiar con esta loca "colección de memorias" algún día... Mientra tanto yo, seguiré retrasando indefinidamente mis proyectos de desocupación de estos espacios... ¡En fin, nadie parece necesitar realmente que estén vacíos!... :)
