Don’t you just hate it when you need something specific and you just can’t find it anywhere!! *Universal* this and *Universal* that... No, I need a specific design for a specific purpose. It needs to be rugged and tough, and fit just right!
If any of you have followed my posts for the past 2 or so years, you might have caught on that I am a Lineman by trade. I took a position as a Serviceman, yes I’m still a Lineman it’s just that I have some different responsibilities now. Basically my truck is my office throughout the day. Phone calls, text, emails, outages, customer issues... what ever comes in I need to be able to handle while in my bucket truck. Yes, I have a desk and computer at the shop but I have to be mobile. Who would have thought that I would need so many electronic devices.... Okay, Okay, *need* is a strong word... how about this... *I could use* so many different devices to make my job that much easier and that much more organized. From the Bluetooth Bose ear pods, to the iPhone and iPad, Oh ya not to mention 10 cup holders in the cab. Yes 10 cup holders... we will go over that another day. So this is where the issue comes in. My iPad sits on the console and is a huge pain in the butt to use when it is there. I have to be a dang contortionist to be able to use it while it’s on the console. The worst is when I am going through a field or bumpy road and I am trying to follow the map. A couple too many bumps and the stupid thing ends up on the floor board on the passenger side. Gee... that’s nice!! Finally I got sick and tired of chasing my iPad all over the truck I started digging for an iPad holder to mount in the truck. This is where I noticed that I wasn’t going to find anything that would work how I really *needed* it to work. There is that word *need* again. So...

After searching the inter-web thing for several hours, (not all at once) taking to several people I discovered a pretty popular company that off-road, ATV and Jeep enthusiasts use for their devices. They make all kinds of different “holders” for all the many electronic devices we have around us. [RAM Mounts](https://www.rammount.com/). So after searching and thinking what would work best for my specific application I chose to go with what they call the X-Grip tablet holder.

When the two tabs on the top are squeezed, it moves 4 points of attachment in order to fit the iPad into it. Then let go and it locks in place. It holds the iPad really secure, which is what I need. My truck goes into some pretty nasty places and on some seriously rough roads... if you even want to call them roads. Ok, so the way it holds the iPad is cool but how in the world am I going to attach this to the truck. You know a place where it won’t just fall off and onto the floorboard like before!! None, and I mean none, of their attachment bracket deleos look to me like they would work very well on their own. They just seem unstable for my application.

I need my iPad to be in this space here. Ya they have the cup holder ones, but remember the places this truck goes? A long flexible bar deleo wouldn’t work either. This iPad would be flopping all over the place. I quickly came to the conclusion that I was going to have to build a little something to work in conjunction with a bracket provided by RAM Mounts. Some thing simple and sturdy that isn’t too noticeable and bulky. The stand I chose has 2 ball joints and a bar clamp on the bottom. The 2 ball joints allow me to maneuver the iPad in whatever position I would like and the bar clamp should... I repeat *Should* ... make it really easy for me to build something that it can attach to.

So the plan I came up with is to simply make an upside down *U* shaped bracket to fit in this space. Right in front of the middle seat cushion and below the armrest. Two flat bar pieces that bolt in behind the seat mounts and a round bar connecting the tops of each flat bar for the iPad stand to clamp to.

Shoot I should have this whipped out in no time. A few bends, a few welds, a little paint and *KA-POW* Done-Zi!! Yep I just typed Done-Zi. Never heard of that?? Well neither have I so we are both in the same boat. Basically I am just letting you al know how over confident I am in this project. The idea is simple but the way these seats are bolted down and the angles I need to bend the flatbar isn’t so simple. *fingers crossed* So first I had to tear out the center console area and locate both of the seat mounting bolts that I want to attach to.

The middle seat bolt in the upper portion of the picture, is super easy to get to and easy to make a bracket for. Buuuutttt of course the other bolt is on some weird angle and off to the side a bit. Gee... that’s nice now isn’t it!! Well let’s see what kind funky piece I can make for that. So much for fast and easy. Using some old salvaged steel braces from an old wreck out job, I started by cutting off the hole on one end and drilling the right size hole for the bolt. So far I am off to a good start wouldn’t ya say?

I’m just going to eye ball this and see what kind of bends I can make and see if it fits. For those that don’t know the term, “*Eye-Ballin’*” it’s when you just look and something and visualize what you want it to look like. It might be a distance, angle, size whatever. I started off with giving the first piece flatbar a twist. You see I need it to sit flat behind the seat mount, then twist 90 degrees to give me a good surface to weld the round bar onto. Plus the space between the seat mount and the floor is so small, the flatbar will only fit in their one way... flat. So using a vise and a 24 inch pipe wrench I gave the flatbar a nice 90 degree twist.

After a couple more little bends to match the contour of the floor, it seems to be fitting really nicely. It’s a snug fit to say the least. It took a lot of bending and re-bending... bending back and bending again. Eventually I was satisfied with its position.

It might not seem like it but that piece took quite a while to make. Checking... double checking over and over. Plus not to mention I had to scrap one piece and start over once...*Shhh don’t tell anyone*. This next one should be a piece of cake compared to that one. Just a simple 90 degree bend with just a little twist in it to make it parallel with the other

For some reason I like to get the more difficult things out of the way first if I can. My reasoning for this is, once your done with the hard part then you know you are on the downhill slope. Instead of getting a bunch of easy stuff done then stepping back and thinking, “*Crap... I still have to deal with that!!*” With both of the sides in place and bolted down I need to get the right vertical position for the round bar that connects them. First I need to measure the length of course...

In order to hold the bar in place temporarily, I bent the 2 sides in just a little bit. This put a bit of a pinch on the bar. The bar... oh ya, that. It was cut from an old 3/4 inch anchor rod that got removed. Basically a 3/4 inch galvanized solid rod with threads on each end. So with the 3/4 inch rod squeezed between the flatbar, I attached the iPad mount and adjusted the height to where I liked it. Then measured up off the floor on each side to make it level and *Eye-Ball* it a bit.

Then I marked each flatbar and removed them from the truck I order to weld them. Now both sides need to be parallel to each other and straight. Again having a good *Eye* really goes a long ways!! ###
Short Story
### I was framing a big custom house back in the day. I had worked with this guy for a few months and was just figuring the older guy out. We were holding a chalk line to cut the edge of the flooring on the second floor. I hollered to him, “*Hey, make sure you use your Good eye*” Then my buddy started laughing really hard. He said, “*Dude, he is colorblind in one eye!*”
*The End*
Sorry no welding photos but you wouldn’t want to see my welds anyway. I tend to just *blob* it on there. Hahaha. So to coverup my crappy welds and smooth off the sharp edges on the flat bar, I hit it with a grinder. Now that looks pretty nice. *Side note* - Always clean off the galvanized coating before welding. It puts off a very harmful gas when hit with the arc of a welder -
Look at that funky bend on the left piece... weird?!?
I am on the home stretch now!! All I have to do is test fit it and throw on some paint to make it look nice. The test fit was a bit of a battle but I wasn’t about to lose it. I ended up having to *tweak* the flatbar pieces just a little bit to get them where they needed to be in order to line up right with the bolts.

Alright now it’s tike to paint this bad boy up. I chose a Satin Black because it goes good with the interior. :wink:wink After I literally watched paint dry, I wrestled it back into position and bolted it in place. I do have to say, “*So far, So Good*” I am really liking how this looks.

Now I just need to snap the center console pieces back into pl......... ##
CRAP!!!
## I totally forgot the the center console stuck nearly under the seat!! I did everything I could to get it to fit. Nothing was working with the current setup. I could make a new flatbar piece but then it would effect my seat sliding forward and back. Plus I would probably hit my knee on it. Well desperate times call for desperate measures. I ended up cutting a little notch in the plastic in order for it to fit. I really didn’t want to but I felt it was my last resort.
It’s hardly noticeable unless you stand on your head on the driver floorboard.
Alright now that the console is all back together let’s have a look at this from a few different angles shall we?

Overall I am pretty happy with how this turned out. I would like to figure something else out for that driver side flatbar next time. A couple other guys want this sort of mount in their trucks, so I will have the opportunity to make improvements to my first design in the future. I have been using this for about a week and I haven’t had any problems with it... so far. It does have a little “wobbley” movement just because the iPad has some weight and it sits so high. I don’t think I am going to able to avoid that. As far as the RAM mount itself, I am really impressed with how well it holds its position. The turn knobs that tighten the 2 ball joints doesn’t take much torque and it is locked in nice and tight. The lower bar clamp does slip a little when I am hitting some washboard roads but that is due to the bar being slick. Maybe I will add some sort of grip tape to add some friction.

Well there she is folks, locked in and ready for work. Thanks for hangin’ with me on another DIY project done by yours truly. I hope you enjoyed it. My mobile office is complete... for now
Until Next Time... Steem On and Sometimes You Just Have to Build it Yourself Don’t forget to mention @splatz when you encounter a post that deserves a good Splattin’ by the @splatz trail

:confession: I skimmed this article, then I got to the steel twisting and was like, “dope!” What I’m trying to say is, now I have to start over. I’ll be back but I didn’t want to keep that part of the story a secret. Ok, bye. *edit* I’m back. Man, I know I’ve told you before but when anyone around here thinks of DIY, you’re in their thoughts. Rough life over there, huh? Meter checks, rhinos, iPad holders, which reminds me—an iPad! And another thing, they pay you to do it. 👍🏿 I thought you would’ve heated the steel. I guess I never tried twisting square stick without heat. Another great tutorial @jlsplatts.

When you have been hittin’ the gym as hard as I have been, you don’t need to heat up steel to bend it. Just a good amount of leverage. LOL I did this on my own time, but they supplied me all the other stuff. Thanks for stoppin’ by sir!! Your kind words are never taken lightly. This is one awesome project brother, mad props my friend. I understand the frustration of making those bends just right. Definitely got some good lessons learned for the 2.0 version. If you ever get a free Saturday I'd love to bring you on the Podcast with me to chew the fat.
