Hive Garden QOTW #10 : I practice hand weeding

Hello Everyone

Welcome to my blog and my entry to hive garden question of the week

I am answering to

> How do you manage unwanted plants in the garden?

This question came in the right time for me.

Because I travelled some weeks ago to my hometown.
And it happens to be planting and grooming season there.
I was so busy with weeding from one farm to the other, to our garden, my mom's school garden, and our surroundings.

It was a busy stay for me, and I was so glad to be around and take care of these things.

My mom doesn't engage in many gardening after the accident that caused her to take bed rest for almost a year.

I was so happy helping her out, even though she doesn't engage in much gardening.
She still loves to plant.

So, helping her out gives her so much joy, seeing my mom happy gladdens me a lot.

We take care of unwanted plants in our garden by weeding them out with hoe or cutless.
I use cutless when the plant is big.

The initial stage of our garden then didn't need cutless to remove the weeds through weeding.
So, I used a hoe to get the job done.
This process isn't easy, as you have to be careful not to uproot a crop.
I use my hand to pull the weeds when I find out that the hoe might not separate them in a space.

So, the weeding involves look,check before action.
This takes so much time to achieve a good result.
But when you do it looks so amazing and something one should be proud of.

This is a photo of one of the gardens I weeded.
The difference is clear.

Most people use herbicides to do the job for them.
This process is very easy and less stressful.
It also requires being careful.

I don't really know much about it because I haven't done this method before.

My landlady uses the method a lot, and she prefers it.

Seeing the results is so cool.
The herbicides they use are not harsh or strong to kill other useful crops.

I heard of one they mix with fermented cassava water, which is very interesting.
I would learn about it because it's cool.

This hand weeding method is not easy at all and tiring. It requires a lot of patience. Using herbicide on other hand is not easy too. It requires a lot of carefulness because it might destroy your hard labour when it gets in contact with your crops. Kudos to you!

Before, we also used herbicides, but they're depleting the natural balance of nutrients in the soil, resulting in poorly growing or stunted plants. The worst effect was when we harvested bitter cucumber due to nutrient imbalance in the soil after using herbicides.

This time, we are using the hand weeding method just like what you are doing in your crops. It's tedious but beneficial to the soil and plants. Regular weeding is the real solution to avoid facing huge challenges in removing unwanted plants without resorting to poisonous chemicals. We are starting to apply this method. 💚
