It is getting tougher by the day with the cost of living. On 9th November the Public Servants Association (PSA) members marched to the National Treasury in Pretoria, South Africa over an increase in salary to cope with the rising [cost](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-cost) of living.

The association demands 6.5% only to reach a deadlock of a 3% increase with the government with an extended monthly R1000 equivalent to $57.9 at the current [exchange](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-exchange) rate.

With no other source of income and relying on a salary alone with family or planning to start a family can be unhealthy for families [financially](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-finance).    
A friend of mine in Port Elizabeth is currently expecting a twin, the first time he was told by the doctor the girlfriend is carrying a twin over the phone he said the phone dropped from his hand as he wasn't expecting a twin due to [expenses](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-expense). 

Due to present-day financial difficulties, some of us are getting deterred from wanting to get married to raise a family, it is already tough surviving alone let alone with a wife and kid(s). 

You want to be in a position to put some [money](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-money) aside for savings or [investment](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-investment) after monthly expenses, the opposite is the case with most getting into [debt](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-debt) to survive till the next payday, it becomes a repeated cycle with debt getting bigger and even worse when a partner isn't working or lost his or her job. 

I have been such a situation in the past without a job, and no source of income, my health deteriorated drastically, and there was the feeling in incapable of providing for myself and to even supporting my girlfriend back then even though she was very supportive bring food from her mom and having to pay my rent twice. 

I fear ever experiencing that in my life again Covid 19 almost took me there as I got retrenched, I now have [Hive](https://leofinance.io/@crypto-guides/what-is-hive-crypto-hive) even though I was stubborn for a few months not to spend from my Hive income, it wasn't long till I had to live off Hive for three months before things got better. 

Whether we get those x% increase we demand at work or not a second and even third source of [income](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-income) is vital to ease financial pressure, especially when a family is involved.
