</center>

<div class="text-justify">

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

<div class="text-justify">

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

# Lección 3: Dar el Ejemplo y Comer tu Propia Comida

<center>*<a href="http://reappropriate.co/2012/11/in-defense-of-the-men-who-built-america/">Source</a>*

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

<center>*<a href="https://www.stephendavidentertainment.com/portfolio-item/the-men-who-built-america/">Source</a>*

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

# Conclusión

  # The Men Who Built America (Chapter 5)
##### [English Version]

</center>

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

Hello Hivers, it is a real pleasure to write again for all movie and series lovers, this time I want to continue with the work of reviewing and extracting the lessons of a great docudrama produced and broadcast by the famous History network, a minisierie of a subgenre of documentary that shows us some of the greatest entrepreneurs in history, names like Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford are part of what we know as the American dream. On this occasion I will analyze and extract some lessons from Chapter 5, where a new competitor joins the fight to be the richest and most powerful man in America, none other than the legendary banker J.P. Morgan.

<div class="text-justify">

You don't have to be a fierce lover of economics and finance for this name not to resonate in your head. John Pierpont Morgan is a legendary businessman devoted to what his father, Junius Spencer Morgan, called the industry that would dominate all others, finance. The Morgans made important contributions to modern banking, founded one of the first investment banks and their influence transcended the continent, something that for the time was uncommon due to the long voyages by ship.

In this miniseries we have seen and extracted lessons from entrepreneurs such as Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, who had humble origins, Morgan on the other hand his life was within the world of finance led by his father.

<div class="text-justify">

# J.P. Morgan's Beginnings

Growing up in a family that leads the national banking is evident that it has its advantages in terms of education, we observe in the miniseries that his father makes him study at a very early age about finance, the accounts have to be perfect for the young Morgan. Pierpont, as his father calls him in the miniseries, is an intelligent man and a quick learner, he is a great help to the whole Morgan house to expand the power and influence. They focus on buying bankrupt companies and merging them back to profitability.

The railroad industry was in a pretty tough time and many companies could not afford their expenses, an opportunity for Morgan to take over beaten companies that would be at a much lower price compared to previous years. By buying companies in the same industry he could eliminate competition between them and increase rates, returning sustainability to the companies bought.

# Lesson 1: Self-identity

J.P. Morgan, lived under the imposing shadow of his father, one of the most famous and important bankers of the time, he had seen the stories of progress of two men who were the reflection of the modernization of the nation, John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, J.P Morgan wanted to have his name raised next to these titans, however, within the shadow of his father he could not do it.

  <center>*<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/222646775303763045/">Source</a>*

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

John Pierpont Morgan wanted something greater than to be subject to his father's decisions and fame, he wanted to create his own identity, a brand that would enhance his name and not his father's. It is important to note that John was very comfortable financially, a person with little ambition or confidence would simply sit back and wait to receive the money and squander it. It was a very comfortable position but he did not want to be comfortable, he preferred to take the risk and step outside of his father's influence to create his own empire based on his own knowledge and experience.

<center>

  <center>*<a href="https://www.aprilsmith.org/episode-6-lesson.html">Source</a>*

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

For an entrepreneur this is a very important lesson, getting out of a comfortable position and creating something of your own is one of the most difficult steps to take, taking the risk of going against the current can define the true success of the ordinary, having our identity and being faithful to it as to our ideas is essential, learning from influential people, however, not copying or imitating them completely, our essence as an individual must be present in our project or business.

# Lesson 2: The Risk of Progress

For John Pierpont Morgan it was important not only to buy and sell, he wanted to create something new like those titans Rockefeller and Carnegie, to create something revolutionary that would change the world, however, making this decision carries a great risk, although if the entrepreneur knows that the technology of the future is in his hands it is not a great risk, but for others it can be something crazy or absurd.

J.P Morgan creates an alliance with one of the most renowned inventors of the time, Thomas Alva Edison was famous for his inventions, but he was still developing one of his main products, the light bulb.

<center>

  <center>*<a href="http://hstrial-jmorck.homestead.com/">Source</a>*

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

The Morgan's had a code in their way of doing business, they avoided risks at all costs, a very new and unprecedented industry meant a risk that meant leaving aside so many years of his father's teachings, who invested only in totally safe businesses, which obviously is fine, however, as explained in the previous lesson J.P Morgan wanted to get out of his father's envelope and create a name of his own, he decides to go against his father to invest everything he has in the electric power industry.

If we look from the logical perspective of the time it might seem crazy, people were comfortable and used to the illumination of kerosene lamps, we can be sure that the idea of illuminating homes with electric power was something that a large number of people opposed, however, Morgan knew that electricity like the wheel would revolutionize the existence of man on earth, a huge risk but worth facing.

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

# Lesson 3: Setting an Example and Eating Your Own Food

This lesson is described in the miniseries by commentary by the famous entrepreneur Mark Cuban, describing that many entrepreneurs must set an example by consuming or using the product they sell, he calls it "eating your own dog food". If the entrepreneur or businessman does not have confidence in the product he sells, he cannot expect others to have confidence in him.

J.P. Morgan installed an electrical system in his house, with the help of Edison they placed a generating plant in the shed and installed a large number of meters of wires and placed more than 400 light bulbs throughout the house, by giving the example of the potential and comfort that generated the electric energy inside his house could convince many that electricity would revolutionize the whole world, that house was the first in the world to be illuminated by electricity, an unprecedented breakthrough.

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

# Lesson 4: Don't Underestimate People // Edison Vs Tesla

Many of us know the struggle between these great inventors, Tesla began working in Edison's laboratories. In the miniseries we observe Tesla with great ideas, however, Edison dismisses him and attacks every idea, fed up with Edison's treatment he decides to submit his resignation to Edison to create his own company.

It is evident that after so many achievements Edison's personality became arrogant, thinking that he would be the only one with the answers that would revolutionize mankind, he saw Tesla as a simple apprentice without a key importance in his ideas, what Edison ignored that this simple apprentice without a bright future would actually be one of the great competitors of his company financed by J.P. Morgan.

<center>

<center>*<a href="http://reappropriate.co/2012/11/in-defense-of-the-men-who-built-america/">Source</a>*

</center>

<div class="text-justify">

It is motivating how Tesla decided to take a big risk by going outside of Edison's orders, there were no electric companies willing to hire an inventor with crazy ideas, but as we all know Tesla turned out to be one of the most brilliant men in the history of mankind, many overflow him over Edison, but that is another topic of discussion.

The most marked difference between the two was the opinion on the direct current used by Edison and the alternating current promoted by Tesla. Arrogance clouded Edison's vision and he was discrediting a true genius, a mistake that cost Edison and Morgan dearly because Tesla was able to get funding through George Westinghouse, Jr and was able to have major hires using alternating current.

<div class="text-justify">

# Conclusion

A wonderful chapter, we see several historical characters of great importance for all mankind, it is one of the most attractive aspects of the chapter, seeing Tesla in his beginning fight against Edison is quite interesting, this war of currents continues in the following chapters. The history of this revolution from a financial point of view is what this docudrama shows us.
