Nei maggiori centri urbani del mondo (soprattutto in Asia) pare che, da qualche decennio ormai, sia in atto una corsa alla realizzazione di strutture “iconiche” che fanno un po’ da bandiera alle città in cui si trovano. Spesso si tratta di grattaceli, quali le Torri Petronas di Kuala Lumpur, il Burj Khalifa a Dubai e magari anche lo Shard di Londra per citarne solo alcuni. 

Non sono un architetto e tantomeno un ingegnere edile per cui non conosco né comprendo le complessità che accompagnano la realizzazione di opere di questo tipo. So solo che ve ne sono alcune che, a lavori finiti incantano, rapiscono non solo il sottoscritto, ma il pubblico in generale. Come si fa infatti a non rimanere meravigliati dalla imponenza del Marina Bay Sands a Singapore, dalle forme sinuose del Capital Gate Tower di Abu Dhabi o dalle linee severe dalla CCTV building di Beijing? 

A Bruxelles, nel cuore della nostra Europa, si trova l’Atomium. Non si tratta di un grattacelo né di un albergo, anzi è una struttura priva oggi di un vero scopo funzionale tranne quello, del tutto encomiabile, di attrazione turistica, allo stesso modo in cui lo è la Torre Eiffel.

In several countries of the world these days (especially in the  East) there appears to be an ongoing demand for iconic architecture as a way of transforming or improving the  image of  towns and cities. The Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur, the Burj Khalifa of Dubai and maybe even the Shard in London are some notable examples of this.

I’m neither an architect nor a civil engineer so I cannot comment on the difficulties related to building structures such as the ones mentioned above. All I know is that many of the buildings  produced in  recent years have the ability to amaze not only myself but the public at large. How can anyone fail to be impressed by the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore or struck by the soft contours of the Capital Gate Tower in Abu Dhabi not to mention the outstanding geometries of  CCTV building in Beijing?

L’Atomium attrae folle di curiosi,  per il proprio design e la propria estetica.  È una struttura indiscutibilmente affascinante,  forse unica nel suo genere, che ammalia l’osservatore,  stimola la fantasia e desta parecchia curiosità.  L’Atomium è di fatto un “landmark” ed è l’icona di Bruxelles.  L'ho visitato qualche giorno fa.

Dall’uscita della fermata metropolitana di Heizel (linea 6) si scorgono nel cielo delle enormi sfere lucide (ognuna ha un diametro di diciotto metri), congiunte l’una all’altra da condotti tubi formi. A prima vista non si capisce bene cosa rappresenti questo intreccio di tubi e di palle cromate, sembra non esservi ordine alcuno. Ma più ci si avvicina alla struttura e più diventa chiaro: la forma dell’Atomium rappresenta un modello ingigantito della struttura cristallina “cubica centrata” tipica del ferro (Fe) e dei materiali metallici in genere.

Esistono tantissime informazioni sulla storia dell’Atomium facilmente reperibili su internet a cui vi rimando senza annoiarvi qui. Vi dico solamente che esso venne realizzato nel 1958 in occasione dell’Expo Internazionale di Bruxelles per opera dell’architetto Jean Polak e dall’ingegnere André Waterkeyn.

L’ingresso costa quindici euro ed i biglietti  si possono comprare comodamente on line. La fila per entrare non manca comunque per via dei controlli di sicurezza che però sono abbastanza veloci.

Al proprio interno l’Atomium non smette di stupire. Ascensori e scale mobili permettono il passaggio da una “sfera” all’altra. In esse sono allestite mostre d’arte (in questo periodo v’è qualcosa di Renè Magritte) e fotografie che raccontano un pò della  storia della struttura. Passeggiando con calma ci si impiega un paio d’orette per ammirare tutto. Luci colorate e spazi dalle forme insolite creano un'atmosfera strana estatiche incanta soprattutto i  bambini, che ho notato correvano e saltavano ovunque.

A me l’interno ricordò molto i primissimi film di fantascienza degli anni cinquanta: Il Pianeta Proibito, La Guerra dei Mondi per intenderci. L’acciaio a vista, i colori pastello usati per rivestire gli ornamenti in ferro battuto mi portarono con la fantasia al disco volante C-57D del comandante Adams (Guerra dei Mondi). Forse furono queste le intenzioni di Jean Polak ed Andrè Waterkeyn che idearono l’Atomium in piena epoca di gara spaziale tra Stati Uniti ed Unione Sovietica.

La sfera più alta della struttura si trova a circa novanta metri dal suolo. È chiaramente la postazione più panoramica per ammirare il paesaggio attorno all’Atomium. V’è pure un bar ed un ristorante con un’ottantina di posti a sedere. La cucina è aperta solo per il pranzo con un menù piuttosto vario che spazia dall’aragosta alla bistecca e naturalmente non mancano le cozze al vapore tipiche di Bruxelles. I prezzi sono chiaramente gonfiati, ma vidi che ciò scoraggiò pochi dal godersi una bella mangiata.  

Inutile dire che la visita all’Atomium mi piacque molto.  Fu una occasione per scattare qualche foto insolita e ci tornerei volentieri.

In Brussels, at the heart of Europe, there’s the Atomium. This edifice is neither a skyscraper with apartments and offices nor a hotel; in fact the Atonium has no current functional purpose at all other than being a rather commendable tourist attraction (in pretty much the same way the Eiffel Tower is).

The reason for the Atomium's allure is all to do with it's unique design features  and it's aesthetic appeal. The Atomium's  weird geometrical features  captivate the admirer entirely, coaxes smiles on people's faces, sets the imagination running and undoubtedly raises a lot of curiosity. It’s a celebrated landmark and perhaps the best known icon of Brussels. Also, I payed a visit to it recently!



As you step out of the Heizel metro stop (line 6), the skyline is captured by  massive silver spheres connected to one another by huge tube piping passage ways. There are nine 18m diameter balls that at a first glance seem to be positioned randomly without  order or a perceived pattern. As you get a little closer to the structure however, the meaning of the construction’s geometry becomes clear. The Atomium is a representation of the “cubic centred” crystal structure that typifies metals such as Iron (Fe) .

There’s a wealth of information about the Atomium on line and I will not bore anyone by repeating  it here. I will only hint at the fact that the Atomium was built in 1958 for the Brussels International Expo  and that it was designed by the able hands of Jean Pollak (architect) and Andrè Waterkeyn (engineer).

Entry tickets to the venue cost 15 Euro each for adults and can be easily bought on line. However, queues at the entrance to the Atomium can be expected due to security checks at the doors. It took me around fifteen minutes to get through. 

The Atomium’s interior does not disappoint at all. A well planned system of escalators and lifts allows visitors to move from one “ball” to the next. In each of these there are temporary art exhibitions (Renè Maggrit this month) and pictures and artefacts of the Atomium’s past history, all worth admiring. The unusual shape of the interiors and the clever use of low key lighting give the place a rather surreal feeling that has an obvious effect on younger visitors. I noticed excited kids running and jumping around the place almost everywhere.

To me the Atomium brought memories of old sci-fi movies from the fifties such as The Forbidden Planet or War of the Worlds. I guess it was a combination the exposed iron cladding, the shape of the interiors and the pail colours used to coat the cast iron banisters and railings on the stair wells. I really felt as though I were inside the C-57D space ship commanded by captain Adams and crew from The Forbidden Planet movie. Maybe this was exactly what Pollak and Waterkeyn had in mind when they drew up the plans for the Atomium back in the early days of the space race between the USA and the Soviet Union...who knows?

The highest point of the Atomium is at around 100m from ground level. This of course is the most panoramic point of the  structure which has some interesting views to behold. There’s also a bar and restaurant up there, open for lunch hours only with a rather rich menu to choose from. It includes lobster, meat cuts and of course steamed mussels, the typical dish of Brussels. Prices are steep but I couldn’t see this discouraging people from tucking into a good  meal.

I enjoyed the Atomium vey much. If nothing else it gave  me a chance to take some unusual pictures and I defiantly look forward to visiting again in the future.

I would recommend visiting the Atomium to anyone travelling to Brussels. Don't miss out!
