Questions Not To Ask

<br><br><center>This house is like a heart—
With chambers and rooms
Spaces and corridors…

<br>Doors like valves
That open and shut

Machinery cycling
On and off.

It’s lonely though
In the night
When the world outside
Turns silent and white

Shadows cross the lawns
And the village lights turn on

Do you listen to your heart

And try to understand
Where perhaps, 
You went wrong?

Or do you avoid 
Memories that don’t fit

Blind passages 
That don’t lead to a street

But end in dark fear
As your heart skips a beat?

Do you wake in a dark room
As your eyes scan the gloom
For shapes or footsteps
And wonder what horrors
The night may exhume?

Does your breath resume
When you realize 
The pale face at the window
Is the moon?

Thankfully,
No threat can ensue
When you’re safe
In your womb
Of lies...

Hearing only your heart
Beating in the night.</center>
