<br><br> It turned out to be a pleasant night and all my worrying about Tess and Clare was of no avail because they resolved their differences.

I dropped Tess back at her house and Nat also elected to get out on pretext of meeting her King shepherd.

When Tess and Nat were finally gone, I asked her what transpired when Nat and I left.

<br><br>"You really don't know, do you?" Clare asked.

"No," I said puzzled, "I haven't a clue."

"Think back," she whispered, "to what you told Tess. You said  you realized that she and I were friends and she said *we were friends until*..."

"Right!" I said remembering, "and I said, until *what*?"

"That's right, and I said, not *what*, but *who*."

"I still don't get it," I frowned.

"You should get it. "We were friends until **you.**"

<br><br>My jaw dropped in surprise. "You mean I came between you and Tess―broke up your friendship?"

"Well, it might have been more a case of Tess breaking up our friendship because she was attracted to you."

My head was spinning. "Let me get this straight―if back in the Twenties, I was Paul Thickett and you were Lillian Yardley, then who the hell was Tess?"

"Tess was a beautiful girl called Bethany Vale and before you came along, my best friend."

<br><br>I felt sick at heart and actually began to feel physically nauseous.

I had to pull over to the side of the road and exit the SUV to get some fresh air.

"Are you going to be okay, Marcus?" Clare called out.

"Just give me a few moments, Clare, to clear my head."

<br><br>It all made sense―the moment of recognition in the antique shop when Tess and I first met―the unmistakeable undertow of emotion that drew me to her.

Tess must have felt it too. At the time she probably knew more than I but went along with it regardless knowing it wouldn't last.

Suddenly I recalled the time I was with Tess at *The Watermark* and she told me I *beguiled* her before.

 I remembered the word because it meant I charmed her back in the past and that's why she kept calling me a player.

<br><br>Remembering Tess' remark didn't calm my nausea, but made it worse.

I knew the physical symptoms would eventually pass, but not the guilt.

 I needed to return to the SUV and ask Clare to explain what happened in the past.

It seemed ironic though if I spent a lifetime dreaming about Clare only to discover Tess was right and somehow I allowed myself to be seduced. 

Maybe Tess was right after all. Maybe I was a player.
