Part 8 of our Last of Us playthrough picks up immediately after the events of Episode 7. You found the Firefly lab at the University of Eastern Colorado but it has long been abandoned. You learn an accident released the virus in the lab and the survivors had all left for St. Louis. Before leaving the lab you were attacked by a group of bandits. During the fight you fell off a balcony and were impaled on a piece or rebar. Barely clinging to life Ellie helped you escape to a small town in the mountains. While out looking for food Ellie encountered some people from a nearby group. She traded them some food for medicine before learning they are out to get you and her for killing their men.

### <center>A Trail to Follow</center>

Ellie is startled awake by the sound of voices outside. She gets up and looks out of the basement window to see armed men searching house to house. You’re still barely conscious and in no shape to move. Ellie tells you she’s going to draw them off and heads to the garage. She takes her horse Caliss by the reigns and quietly sneaks out to the street. Once she’s far enough away she starts to ride out of town but is quickly stopped by one of the men who tries to pull her to the ground. Ellie struggles and manages to grab her switchblade. She jams it into his throat and twists as she yells out get the fuck off of me! The rest of his group is alerted by the commotion and give chase. She snaps the reigns and Caliss dashes off down the street.

Caliss is too fast and she’s too far away. The men can’t catch up to her and start shooting. As she continues on down the road more men start racing out to meet her. She hears one of them yell out shoot the fucking horse. Soon after a gunshot claps off in the distance and hits Caliss in the neck. Caliss stumbles and falls off the side of the road and they both tumble down the hillside.  Ellie brushes herself off and looks over to see Caliss laying dead in the snow. But there’s no time to hang around. The men have converged on the street and are shooting down at her.

### <center>A Hen in the Fox House</center>

Ellie quickly runs ahead to a small lakeside community. There are men searching the area for her but she’s able to use Bill’s Bow to take them out and clear a path up the shoreline. One of the men mentions she’s the girl from the University and asks how many men did we lose there? Further down the beach Ellie comes to an old elevated wooden walkway overhanging the lake. Most of it has rotted away and she shimmy’s along the cliff side to move around it. Hopefully this will slow down her pursuers she thinks. Eventually she reaches the rear of a large rustic hotel. She can see the main road out front and figures she can cut through the building. Once she gets back to the main road she’ll circle back to you and make sure your safe.

Ellie finds an open window leading to the basement. She knows it’ll be extremely dangerous to be cornered inside but it’s the only way to get to the main street. Quickly and quietly she moves through the hotel to the front door. Just as she goes to open the door David grabs her from behind and puts her in a choke hold. She struggles but it’s no use and she’s slowly she loses consciousness. When Ellie comes to she’s in a caged room. She see’s someone  at a table chopping something. As her eyes begin to focus she see’s he’s butchering a human body. She attempts to wrestle the door open but it’s no use. David asks, how are you doing? Super, she says defiantly.

### <center>Don’t Eat the Meat</center>

He slides Ellie a plate of food and says you should eat. I know you’re hungry you’ve been out for quite some time. She asks what is it and he tells her it’s deer. With some human helping on the side she asks? No I promise, it’s just the deer meat he assures her. You’re a fucking animal she says in disgust. As Ellie starts to eat David tells her you’re awfully quick to judgement considering you and your friend killed how many men? They didn’t give us a choice she replies. And you think we have a choice, he scoffs, is that it? You kill to survive and so do we. We have to take care of our own by any means necessary. So what now, Ellie asks, you going to chop me up into tiny little pieces.

He looks at her affectionately and says I’d rather not. Please tell me your name. Ellie shoves the plate of food away from her and says you’re so full of shit. On the contrary, I’ve been quite honest with you. Now I think it’s your turn. It’s the only way I’m going to be able to convince the others. Convince them of what, she asks? That you can come around, you have heart that you’re loyal and you’re special. David moves closer to Ellie and looks longingly at her as he gentle grasps her hand. Ellie realizes what he wants. She looks back at him and starts to caresses his hand. He moves in closer.

Without batting an eye she pulls hard on his thumb and breaks it. He winces in pain and is forced to his knees. She tries to grab his key ring from his belt but he grabs her hand and yanks her hard against the cage door. Ellie falls to the ground face bloodied. He calls her a stupid little girl. You are making it very difficult to keep you alive. What am I supposed to tell the others now? Ellie. She says softly. What he snarls? Tell them that, Ellie is the little girl who broke your fucking finger! How did you put it, tiny pieces? David smirks as he walks away, see you in the morning Ellie.

### <center>Where’s the Girl?</center>

Slowly your eyes start to open as your fever breaks. The penicillin must have kicked in. You call out to Ellie but she doesn’t answer. The pain in your abdomen radiates to every inch of your body as you struggle to your feet. Before you head upstairs you collect your backpack. You wince in pain as you struggle up the stairs. You’re still weak but you are determined to find her. There’s no sign of her in the cabin and Caliss isn’t in the garage. You head outside and call out for her but still she doesn’t reply. You wonder where she ran off to as you start moving through town. Suddenly a gate kicks open and armed men spot you. They start firing but you pull up your revolver and gun them down.

You jump over a fence when one of them grabs you from behind. He yells finish him off and another man charges at you with a knife. You drop him with a swift kick to the balls and then head butt the guy holding you. He stumbles back dazed and you slam his head into the side of the house. He crumples to the ground as the other man is pushing himself back to his feet. But you kick him square in the face. You’re coming with me you tell them. You pull them both into a nearby basement and start leaning into them hard. Your hands ache from beating them. You pull out the man’s knife and walk over to one you’ve tied to chair. You sit down and lean in close. Now the girl you growl. Is she alive you ask?

What girl I don’t know no girl, he says. You jam the knife into his kneecap and he screams in agony. Focus right here or I’ll pull your goddamned knee off. The girl! She’s alive. She’s David’s newest pet he squeals. Where, you ask. In the town he yelps. You pull out a map and tell him to point out where. It better be the same exact spot your buddy points to you warn him. It’s right here go ahead and verify it, he’ll tell you, he says. But instead you grab him around the throat and snap his neck. His friend looks on in terror as you walk towards him. Heyells fuck you man he told you what you wanted! I ain’t telling you shit. That’s alright, you say, I believe him. You proceed to pick up a metal pipe and crack open his skull with it.

### <center>Tomorrow’s Dinner</center>

David wakes Ellie when he grabs her and carries her onto the butcher table. Ellie bites his hand and he yells, I warned you, as he raises a cleaver over his head. I’m infected, she yells, I’m infected! David pauses. Really, he smirks. And so are you, she says, right there roll up my sleeve. He puts down the cleaver and says ok I’ll play along. As he stares at the bite mark on her arm she asks him what did you say, everything happens for a reason huh? James asks what the hell is that? She would have turned by now it can’t be real David says. James yells it looks pretty fucking real to me! While they are distracted Ellie grabs the butcher knife and stabs James in the throat. He falls to the ground clasping his neck. Ellie quickly rolls under the table.

Before David grabs his pistol and starts shooting. Ellie manages to climb out an open window in the back. But before she does she spots her switchblade and takes it with her. A storm has set in over the area. Fog and blowing snow have reduced the visibility to near zero. She uses the storm as cover and gets the drop on David’s men. The area is a maze of old buildings fences and barricades. David’s men are patrolling everywhere but Ellie is able to sneak by most of them. She finds an open window in another building and climbs through to escape the storm. As she moves through the old restaurant David lunges out at her and knocks her to the ground. In the commotion an open flame lamp is knocked over.

### <center>Cat and Mouse</center>

Ellie quickly scurries away and hides behind a partition wall. It’s alright, there’s nowhere to go he says as he locks the door behind him. If you want out you have to come get the keys. Behind him Ellie sees the fire quickly spreading. I know you’re not infected, he continues. No one that’s infected fights this hard to stay alive. As he continues to talk Ellie sneaks around behind him. When he’s not looking Ellie jumps on his back and stabs him in the upper chest. He knocks her to the ground and she scurries away again before he gets the chance to shoot her. That was good kid.  It’s going to be alright he says as he holsters his gun and pulls out a machete. You know you keep surprising me.

Ellie hops over another partition wall and quickly circles behind him. As he starts to move away she pounces and stabs him in the kidney. He swings his machete but she cut him deep and he’s a step slower than usual as she runs away. The fire has spread to the ceiling and half the building is now engulfed in flames. As David pursues her she evades him and once again comes at him from behind. She jumps on his back and starts stabbing. He falls back onto a table and grabs her by the head, tossing her over his shoulder. She hits the ground hard and both of them pass out as the blaze continues spreading around them.

### <center>A Father’s Promise</center>

The snow is nearly blinding as you approach David’s town. A group of his men are out patrolling and you hide in the storm to pick them off silently. The alarm bells are deafening as you stalk through the city looking for Ellie. You find an open door in an alleyway and head through the building. Inside you find Ellie’s backpack sitting on a shelving unit. You grab it and keep moving. As you enter the next room you see bodies hanging from meat hooks being bled out.  Oh Christ I gotta find her you say to yourself. As you exit the meat house you see a building lit up in flames. You just know Ellie has to be nearby so you set off down the street.

Ellie wakes on the floor of the restaurant. The smoke is thick as she crawls along the ground to reach David’s machete. Before she reaches it David kicks her in the ribcage. He tells her I knew you had heart. It’s ok to give up, there ain’t no shame in it. You struggle back to your knees and keep crawling towards the machete. Guess not it’s just not your style. Is it he asks while kicking her again. She cries out in pain as he drops down and mounts her. You can try begging he snarls . Fuck you she groans as he puts his hands around her throat and squeezes. You think you know me? Well let me tell you something, he continues as he squeezes harder. You have no idea what I’m capable of. Ellie squirms and struggles as she reaches for the machete.

She’s about to pass out but gets a hold of it. She swings hard and slashes his arm. He recoils and falls back as she jumps on top of him and begins violently thrashing his face with the machete. By the time you get to her she’s covered in blood and David isn’t even recognizable. You grab her and pull her away. Ellie stop! She yells don’t fucking touch me! You try to calm her down it’s me, it’s me look at me you say. She starts crying as she sees you. He tried to. But she can’t even say the words. You pull her close and hold on to her oh baby girl it’s ok, it’s ok. She clutches her arms around you. Tears well up in your eyes and you promise her you’ll never let anyone hurt her again.
