We need to change the number of witness votes from 30 down to 5

# Right now on steem/steemit we have 30 witness votes.

That is a major problem when only the top 20 witnesses are the major decision makers.

That means that one group or stakeholder could elect all 20 witnesses.

Which is exactly what is going on right now.

We have the two largest stake holders deciding who the top 20 witnesses are.

This is anything but decentralized.

Help me get this changed as soon as possible. 

Let it be known that you want this changed as soon as possible to keep the chain as decentralized and distributed as possible.

I have not, but just looking at how many vests they control, all it basically takes is freedom/pumpkin and blocktrades and you are a top witness no matter what. There is only one witness in the top 20 not getting a freedom/pumpkin vote.

So, in effect, he is dictating the direction of the entire platform.

It can't be that way.

I was told we need to rally up support from the community to make this change.

Getting the witnesses interested in it may be another topic all together, after all it will affect some of them continuing to be within the top 20...

The number needs to be revisited for sure.

We also need to reset the votes each year or X period of time. People can die, become uninterested, or just decide to leave ... it's a real problem that no one is talking about.

Yep. The witness structure needs a major overhaul and it is one of the most important aspects of the ecosystem, no wonder we are failing.

That's an awesome thoughts and pulled a hardwork to deliver with statistics. I believe yes , decreasing the witness votes will be great idea. I agree with that decrease the large stake influence But it's also effects the low ranked witnesses who are running the block chain with minimum profit or returns. The decreasing of witness votes will discourage or leave them hopeless.

But there is another great way to counter this problem.

## Expiry of witness vote

Yes, after every period of time, the votes of a member should be expire and again he need to vote. So the witnesses are in constant check and attentive about the votes. If the top 20 witness is inactive on chain, people don't vote for him again. So there will be regular events by witnesess  showing their work to block chain members and urging and reminding about  the importance of the witness vote to people.

Yes I like that as well. Though I think a long period of time is needed. Something like a year sounds reasonable to me, where votes expire after 12 months.

5 is a good number because it would prevent just splitting up of stake to still control all 20 votes. It could still be done, but a very large stake would be needed.
