With the large hadron collider we can study the world of subatomic particles by making them crash and seeing the result of those collisions, it's like blowing up a planet and studying its elements from the remains that remain, however, to investigate in detail the physical processes what would be the day to day of the particles and atoms we need very small tools.

Physicists at the University of California at Irvine have come up with what is perhaps the smallest tool we can build, it is made up of a hydrogen molecule which is the simplest atom in the universe.

The researchers have shown that they can use the hydrogen molecule as a quantum sensor in a scanning tunneling microscope equipped with a terahertz laser, thus measuring the chemical properties of materials at unprecedented temporal and spatial resolutions.

This new technique can also be applied to the analysis of two-dimensional materials, which are those composed of a single layer of atoms such as graphene, these materials have the potential to play a crucial role in future advanced energy systems, in new electronic systems and in future quantum computers.
