Walmart is getting into the cryptography cart with two blockchain patents
While most of the world has fun watching Bitcoin go up and down faster than a yo-yo, companies are struggling to get into madness.

In some cases, that only means announcing a "Bitcoin pivot" and watching your company die; In other cases, it means taking the underlying technology of blockchain and applying it to conventional retail.

The blockchain is a "distributed ledger" that feeds the cryptocurrencies. It is key to the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies, since it allows everyone to track who owns what, but does not depend on a centralized database or an individual to be the banker.

While the blockchain is best known for its application to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, Walmart wants to use it for payment systems for sellers and customers. In two patents filed last year and approved on Thursday, Walmart describes the system:

"In one aspect, a system of shared payment of suppliers is provided, which would automatically process the payment for a total amount owed for the products and services related to obtaining and delivering the products; automatically divide the payment between the parties that provided services related to obtaining and delivering the products; and encrypt the payment and the division of the payment with a blockchain ".

Of course, Walmart is not new to the world of payment processing. It was the spearhead of a new payment protocol that was being developed a few years ago as a rival to Apple Pay and other mobile wallet systems, called CurrentC.

That system depended on users scanning a QR code and then the ATM scanned another QR code from their phone's screen, and it was undeniably terrible. Fortunately, the popularity of Apple Pay and Google Wallet made CurrentC DOA.

Based on these two patent applications, it seems that Walmart could have learned something from the failure of CurrentC. Instead of designing their own cryptocurrency to use in their stores, which is exactly the kind of nonsense crypto specters are doing now, the company seems to be using the only good part of the cryptographic technology, the blockchain, and leaving the rest die.
