Escribí estas líneas de intención poética para honrar al poeta polaco [**Czeslaw Milosz**](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czes%C5%82aw_Mi%C5%82osz), galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1980, quien nos ilustró desde la literatura en ensayo y poesía (otros lo habían hecho en textos teórico-políticos) acerca del “aceptado” y “normalizado” terror ciudadano del totalitarismo, experiencia terrible que vivió dos veces: el nacionalsocialismo o nazismo, y el stalinismo. Precisamente, su más importante ensayo sobre este asunto se titula *El pensamiento cautivo* (o *La mente cautiva*, según la traducción), de 1953. Espero escribir un post sobre la obra de tan importante escritor, fallecido el 14 de agosto de 2004, pues no tuve la oportunidad de elaborarlo en su momento. Pero, como dice la frase común, nunca es tarde, más tratándose de este autor perteneciente a la poesía polaca, una de las más ricas del siglo XX.

_I wrote these lines of poetic intention to honor the Polish poet [**Czeslaw Milosz**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czes%C5%82aw_Mi%C5%82osz), winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980, who enlightened us from literature in essays and poetry (others had done it in theoretical-political texts) about the "accepted" and "normalized" terror of totalitarianism, a terrible experience he lived twice: National Socialism or Nazism, and Stalinism. Precisely, his most important essay on this subject is entitled **Captive Thought** (or **The Captive Mind**, according to the translation), from 1953. I hope to write a post about the work of such an important writer, who died on August 14, 2004, since I did not have the opportunity to elaborate it at the time. But, as the common phrase goes, it is never too late, especially when it comes to this author belonging to Polish poetry, one of the richest of the twentieth century._

Visitante de la poesía, 
como quien dice del amor y del dolor,
tus poemas reencuentran
en la mirada al mundo
y en el sí mismo
tantas veces acosado.

Visitaste, Czeslaw Milosz, 
la penuria de un tiempo
bajo el sello de la “mente cautiva”,
no de la libertad del canto
ni del equilibrio del aire.

El “Big Brother”, 
de nombre alemán o ruso,
Hitler-Stalinmente,
asoló el alma de comunes
con su esvástica
o su estrella roja.

Cual habitantes de un relato kafkiano,
aplaudieron o asintieron,
obnubilados o temerosos,
fueron quemaduras en sus brasas,
en una servidumbre aceptada,
ideología venal y venérea.

No hay soles ni lunas diferentes,
recordado poeta, 
y usted lo supo.
La utopía es una trampa.
La historia se repite,
como dijo el alemán autor
de este largo extravío,
sol negro de sí mismo,
como comedia.

as it were, of love and pain,
your poems to meet again
in looking at the world

You visited, Czeslaw Milosz, 
the hardship of a time
under the seal of the "captive mind",
not of the freedom of song
nor of the balance of the air.

The "Big Brother", 
German or Russian name,
Hitler-Stalin,
ravaged the common soul
with his swastika
or his red star.

Like inhabitants of a Kafkaesque tale,
they applauded or nodded,
dazzled or fearful,
they were burned in its embers,
in an accepted servitude,
venal and venereal ideology.

There are no different suns or moons,
remembered poet, 
and you knew it.
Utopia is a trap.
History repeats itself,
as the German author
of this long misdirection,
black sun of itself,
as a comedy.
