El instituido día de San Valentín en el siglo V d.C. ha terminado siendo "Día del amor y la amistad". Apoyado en ciertas referencias, construyo este breve texto en tres fragmentos para ficcionar y jugar un poco irónicamente con esa "historia".

A mí me casó con la novia que tenía antes de irme a la guerra, pasando por encima de la prohibición del emperador. Recuerdo que me preguntó qué quería cuando pasaba revista entre los soldados. Le dije que deseaba entregarle mi amor a Vittoria antes de partir.  En secreto realizó las nupcias. Luego, estando en el campo de batalla, me enteré de que lo habían decapitado por desacatar el decreto imperial. Era un valiente.

Yo lo conocí. Nunca lo olvidaré. A mí me entregó una bella rosa en la calle. Se dedicaba a esa extraña actividad aun siendo un religioso, y a las jóvenes como yo nos parecía un amoroso elogio. Le decían Valentín. No sé si era su nombre, pues todo eso lo hacía bajo un sigiloso anonimato. Creo que muchas de nosotras nos enamoramos en secreto de él. Era muy apuesto y caballeroso, pero con un nimbo de santidad.

Separar a los cristianos de las fiestas paganas de la primavera y atraer a los paganos a la festividad cristiana: sé que esa fue la decisión del respetado patriarca de la iglesia, y convertir el 14 de febrero, la fecha de mi martirio, en fiesta del amor, hace más de diecisiete siglos. Luego fui sacado del santoral católico; curiosamente, por no ser más que una leyenda; sin embargo, sigo siendo un regocijo compartido por la gente.
