Ayer -27 de noviembre- se celebró el 507 aniversario de la fundación de mi ciudad, Cumaná. He escrito y publicado en años anteriores textos para ella. Intenté aquí hacer algo diferente, una microficción que imagina el tiempo de su establecimiento por parte del Fray Johannes de Gars y otros franciscanos.

Tierra para habitar, entre el inmenso mar, el río iniciático y la larga y espesa fronda. Quizás eso era lo que sentían los nativos, pensó el fraile al llegar aquí, luego de atravesar ese bravío golfo.

Ahora, le tocaba establecer un asentamiento en estas ignotas tierras en nombre de los reyes católicos, según orden de su superior.

Soy solo un monje franciscano, de un lugar tan disímil a este, y ahora me encuentro con la bendición en estas tierras maravillosas. Sea así en tu nombre, Señor.

Los nativos destruyeron lo que habíamos hecho, apenas unos pocos avances para la evangelización. No somos bien recibidos. ¿Podremos mantenernos aquí?

Como nuestro Francisco, pensé: ¿por qué no fuimos esos custodios de la población y la naturaleza?, dijo el fraile en su estertor.
