Un día como ayer, el 4 de julio de 1934, murió quien indudablemente ha sido la gran pionera del “empoderamiento”, como se dice actualmente, de la mujer en el conocimiento científico y en el ejercicio de este: [**Marie Curie**](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie). Me he atrevido a escribir este breve texto ficcional para resaltar su valor, para lo cual he acudido al recurso de elaborar una suerte de pequeña semblanza de esta notable mujer como si fuera escrita por su segunda hija, [Éve Curie](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%88ve_Curie), quien, efectivamente, escribió una biografía de su madre en 1938, a la que no he tenido acceso. Así que cualquier coincidencia, es mero azar.

_On a day like yesterday, July 4, 1934, died the one who undoubtedly has been the great pioneer of the "empowerment", as they say nowadays, of women in scientific knowledge and in the exercise of this: [**Marie Curie**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie). I have dared to write this brief fictional text to highlight her value, for which I have resorted to the resource of elaborating a sort of small semblance of this remarkable woman as if it were written by her second daughter, [Éve Curie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%88ve_Curie), who, in fact, wrote a biography of her mother in 1938, to which I have not had access. So any coincidence is mere chance._

Mi madre heredó la pasión por el conocimiento científico y la educación, tanto la dedicación al trabajo como la sensibilidad, de mis abuelos. Ella creció entre el magisterio y el arte. Y su vida, sin duda, estuvo marcada completamente por ese legado familiar.

Lamentablemente, fue víctima de la discriminación que a finales del siglo XIX y en los primeros años del siglo XX aún caracterizaban a la sociedad y a ciertas instituciones en la Europa de entonces. No pudo ingresar a la universidad en su país natal, pues en Polonia no estaba permitido para las mujeres. Una vez graduada en Física en la Universidad de París, cuando volvió a Varsovia igual le fue negada su entrada como profesora, por las mismas razones.

Sin embargo, mi madre se sobrepuso, y así como estudió por su cuenta o en una institución universitaria clandestina en su Varsovia,  obtuvo dos licenciaturas científicas en Francia, así como su doctorado. Solo una mujer ganada por el entusiasmo que le producía la procura del conocimiento, el ímpetu por la indagación en los secretos de la naturaleza, y una entrega a la posibilidad de mejorar la vida del prójimo, pudo avanzar en ese arduo camino, en el que se le presentaron muchos rechazos.

Pero también en ese camino consiguió el apoyo de individuos desprejuiciados  –por suerte, siempre los ha habido–, como el de mi padre, Pierre Curie, que además de esposo, fue el compañero de su trabajo denodado. E igualmente algunas personalidades de entonces, lo que permitió que le fuera otorgado el Premio Nobel de Física en 1903, compartido con mi padre y el eminente científico Becquerel, si bien no querían dárselo por ser mujer; de nuevo la antigualla discriminatoria actuando, que cedió por la presión de mi padre, quien se negó a recibir el galardón si mi madre no era reconocida también.  La primera mujer en ganar el Nobel, y la primera en recibirlo dos veces, pues en 1911 le fue otorgado nuevamente, esta vez solo a ella.

Mas la radiactividad, que fue su gran descubrimiento y el motivo de su celebridad, fue también su condena. Madre fue una mujer de una convencida conciencia social y muy emprendedora siempre. De modo que en la Primera Guerra Mundial participó activamente en la atención en los hospitales de campaña en el servicio de rayos X. Ya en sus varios años dedicados a las pruebas de laboratorio estuvo expuesta a los efectos de la radiactividad, pues no se conocían para el momento ciertas precauciones. 

Fue víctima de su gran aporte a la humanidad. La vida estará llena siempre de contradicciones. Hoy recuerdo a mi madre para ustedes, en esta pequeña semblanza, que dedico a mi hermana, también fallecida, [Irène](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ir%C3%A8ne_Joliot-Curie).

My mother inherited the passion for scientific knowledge and education, both the dedication to work and the sensitivity, of my grandparents. She grew up between teaching and art. And her life, without a doubt, was completely marked by that family legacy.

Unfortunately, she was a victim of the discrimination that at the end of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th century still characterized society and certain institutions in Europe at that time. She was unable to enter university in her native country, as this was not allowed for women in Poland. Once she graduated in Physics at the University of Paris, when she returned to Warsaw she was still denied entry as a professor, for the same reasons.

However, my mother overcame, and as well as studying on her own or in a clandestine university institution in her Warsaw, she obtained two scientific degrees in France, as well as her doctorate. Only a woman won over by her enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge, the impetus for inquiry into the secrets of nature, and a dedication to the possibility of improving the lives of others, she was able to advance on this arduous path, on which she faced many rejections.

But also on that road she got the support of unprejudiced individuals - fortunately, there have always been some - such as my father, Pierre Curie, who, in addition to being her husband, was her companion in her courageous work. And also some personalities of the time, which allowed her to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903, shared with my father and the eminent scientist Becquerel, although they did not want to give it to her because she was a woman; again, the old discriminatory attitude, which gave way under pressure from my father, who refused to receive the award if my mother was not also recognized.  The first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first to receive it twice, for in 1911 it was awarded again, this time only to her.

But radioactivity, which was her great discovery and the reason for her celebrity, was also her condemnation. Mother was a woman with a strong social conscience and always very enterprising. In the First World War she was actively involved in the care of the X-ray service in the field hospitals. Already in her several years of laboratory tests she was exposed to the effects of radioactivity, as certain precautions were not known at the time. 

She was a victim of her great contribution to humanity. Life will always be full of contradictions. Today I remember my mother for you, in this short biographical sketch, which I dedicate to my sister, also deceased, [Irène](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ir%C3%A8ne_Joliot-Curie).
