En el post anterior (ver [*](https://peakd.com/hive-110011/@josemalavem/surrealismo-el-ultimo-grito-de-la-vanguardia-artistica-i)) hablé del significado del nombre de este movimiento artístico y de su surgimiento. Ahora pasaré a puntualizar algunos caracteres generales.

Se ha apuntado una caracterización del **Surrealismo** que lo ubica entre dos grandes presencias: entre lo romántico –por el legado de la disconformidad con la sociedad, la búsqueda en lo irracional (el sueño), la intensificación de la vida–  y lo paracientífico, en esto especialmente la presencia de la obra científica de Sigmund Freud, desde aspectos como la represión de la sexualidad, la simbología de los sueños, el flujo de lo inconsciente y técnicas como el automatismo psíquico.

A propósito, leamos una de las definiciones que del surrealismo hará André Breton, su fundador y máximo representante:

>Automatismo psíquico, mediante el cual se pretende expresar, sea verbalmente, por escrito o de otra manera, el funcionamiento real del pensamiento. Dictado del pensamiento con ausencia de toda vigilancia ejercida por la razón, fuera de toda preocupación estética o moral.

Bajo el influjo del método psicoanalítico, que consistirá en la exploración de la dimensión inconsciente, Breton, quien había estudiado medicina y desarrollado prácticas de psiquiatría, propugna la “escritura automática”, donde el individuo se abandona a la corriente libre de lo inconsciente, a la irracionalidad del discurrir de la psique. Como indicará Breton:

>Escribid rápidamente, sin tema preconcebido, bastante de prisa para no olvidar y no sentir la tentación de releeros. La frase vendrá por sí sola, pues es verdad que, en cada segundo, hay una frase extraña a nuestro pensamiento consciente que solo pide exteriorizarse.

_A characterization of **Surrealism** has been suggested that places it between two great presences: between the romantic -because of the legacy of nonconformity with society, the search in the irrational (the dream), the intensification of life- and the para-scientific, especially the presence of Sigmund Freud's scientific work, from aspects such as the repression of sexuality, the symbolism of dreams, the flow of the unconscious and techniques such as psychic automatism._

_By the way, let us read one of the definitions of surrealism by André Breton, its founder and maximum representative:_

>*Psychic automatism, by means of which it is intended to express, whether verbally, in writing or otherwise, the actual functioning of thought. Dictation of thought with the absence of any vigilance exercised by reason, free from any aesthetic or moral concern*.

_Under the influence of the psychoanalytic method, which will consist in the exploration of the unconscious dimension, Breton, who had studied medicine and developed psychiatric practices, advocates "automatic writing", where the individual abandons himself to the free flow of the unconscious, to the irrationality of the flow of the psyche. As Breton will indicate:_

>*Write quickly, without preconceived theme, rather hastily so as not to forget and not to feel the temptation to reread yourselves. The sentence will come by itself, for it is true that, in every second, there is a sentence foreign to our conscious thought that only asks to be externalized.*

La imagen insólita, vehiculada por el azar, de estirpe onírica, tendrá, entonces, para los surrealistas privilegio en su poética. Es la imagen por sí misma, provocada sin arbitrio, con la fuerza irregular y pasional de un estupefaciente, en la expresión de Louis Aragon. Otra cita de Breton lo señala claramente:

>Comparar dos objetos lo más alejados posible el uno del otro o, con otro método, confrontarlos de un modo brusco y sorprendente, es la obra más alta que la poesía pueda pretender.

No es casual que entre los antecesores y modelos del Surrealismo se encuentre el Conde de Lautréamont, con quien identificarán su método en aquella célebre frase de los *Cantos de Maldoror* (1869): “Bella como el encuentro fortuito de una máquina de coser y un paraguas sobre una mesa de disección”.

Al lado de la escritura automática aparecerán luego otros dos métodos o técnicas interrelacionadas: el **“azar objetivo”** y el **”humor objetivo”** (también denominado “humor negro”). 

Del primero –el “azar objetivo”– señala Breton que constituye “el punto de reunión entre el curso aparentemente autónomo de nuestra vida espiritual y el curso aparentemente autónomo del mundo exterior”. El segundo –el “humor objetivo”– será definido también por Breton como “la síntesis de la imitación de la naturaleza, en sus formas accidentales, por una parte, y del humor por otra”; del cual agrega Guillermo de Torre: “es el desquite que el espíritu de capricho y subversión se toma frente a las formas estatuidas, tendiendo a quebrar rigideces y convenciones”.

_The unusual image, conveyed by chance, of oneiric lineage, will have, then, for the surrealists, a privilege in their poetics. It is the image by itself, provoked without arbitrariness, with the irregular and passionate force of a narcotic, in the expression of Louis Aragon. Another quote from Breton points this out clearly:_

>*Comparing two objects as far as possible from each other, or, by another method, confronting them in an abrupt and surprising way, is the highest work that poetry can claim.*

_It is not by chance that among the predecessors and models of Surrealism we find the Count of Lautréamont, with whom they will identify their method in that famous phrase of the *Cantos de Maldoror* (1869): "Beautiful as the fortuitous encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table"._

_Alongside automatic writing, two other interrelated methods or techniques would later appear: **"objective chance "** and **"objective humor "** (also called "black humor")._ 

_Of the first - "objective chance" - Breton points out that it constitutes "the meeting point between the apparently autonomous course of our spiritual life and the apparently autonomous course of the outside world"._ 

_The second - "objective humor"- will be defined by Breton as "the synthesis of the imitation of nature, in its accidental forms, on the one hand, and of humor on the other"; of which Guillermo de Torre adds: "it is the revenge that the spirit of caprice and subversion takes against the established forms, tending to break rigidities and conventions"._

Los surrealistas propusieron y pusieron en práctica algunos juegos, entre los que destaca el conocido **”cadáver exquisito”**, definido en el *Diccionario abreviado del surrealismo* (1938) así (según trascripción al español de Ramón Gómez de la Serna):

>Juego de papel plegado que consiste en componer un dibujo, una frase por varias personas, sin que ninguna de ellas pueda tener en cuenta las colaboraciones precedentes. El ejemplo, hecho clásico, que ha dado su nombre al juego, es la primera frase obtenida mediante tal procedimiento: “El cadáver – exquisito – beberá – un vino – nuevo”.

Los ejes en todos estos métodos, técnicas y juegos serán los que animan, en principio, a estos creadores rebeldes: el deseo, el amor-pasión, la libertad, lo maravilloso y lo mágico (lo esotérico), aunque no siempre en concordancia o equilibrio con la acción de sus propulsores (como veremos).

Para cerrar, una lista esquemática de la propuesta surrealista:

* Contra el racionalismo
* Dictado del inconsciente
* Lo onírico
* Antirrealismo
* Valoración del azar
* Negación de la división sujeto / objeto
* Transformación de la vida en poesía

Espero en próximo post ilustrar estos aspectos con ejemplos de textos surrealistas.

_The surrealists proposed and put into practice some games, among which the well-known **"exquisite corpse "** stands out, defined in the *Abbreviated Dictionary of Surrealism* (1938) as follows (according to Ramón Gómez de la Serna's Spanish transcription):_

>*Folded paper game consisting of composing a drawing, a phrase by several people, without any of them being able to take into account the preceding collaborations. The example, made classic, which has given its name to the game, is the first sentence obtained by such a procedure: "The corpse - exquisite - will drink - a new - wine".*

The axes in all these methods, techniques and games will be those that animate, in principle, these rebellious creators: desire, love-passion, freedom, the marvelous and the magical (the esoteric), although not always in concordance or balance with the action of their propellants (as we shall see).

_To close, a schematic list of surrealist proposal:_

_* Against rationalism_
_* Dictation of the unconscious_
_* The oneiric_
_* Anti-realism_
_* Valuation of chance_
_* Denial of the subject/object division_
_* Transformation of life into poetry_
