Impulsó ese estilo musical que se conoce como <b>soul</b>, que viene a ser una combinación del góspel, el blues, el jazz y “rhythm and blues” (R&B). Fue autor de numerosos éxitos recogidos en más de 50 discos, y muy reconocido con diversos premios, varios Grammy, entre otros. Siendo ciego desde la infancia, impresionó siempre por sus cualidades como intérprete del piano y su estilo singular de cantar, con su gestualidad y movimiento.
