The coming of technology has really changed many parts of our daily lives and literally everything we do. Many things have changed in this our era and one of the biggest changes is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI has literally change how we do things especially as students. Today, many students use AI to help with their schoolwork. I have benefited alot from using AI tools in my daily activities.

On a personal experience, I have used Chat GPT to run my final project in the university and my colleagues project as well. I've used Claude AI to perform my data analysis.

I've worked at the Benue State University ICT cafe and I've used AI to do assignment for students and many other things. Undoubtedly, AI has really help me and many students in doing many thing. But the question is, has it made students smarter or lazy. To me I have the opinion that AI have made student lazy. Because I'm also victim. 

AI is now doing all the thinking for students now. Students no longer put in the effort to understand things especially when they are giving assignment or any task to carry out in school. Before AI came into existence, when students are giving any task to carry out, they had to read books, ask questions, take their time to solve the questions, and write what they understand in their own words. But now, a student can just type a question into an AI app and get a full answer in seconds. Students don’t stress themselves to think, read, or try doing any task by themselves. They just copy the answer straight to their books. 
This has  become a habit in the life of many students and have made students to begin to lose interest in learning by themselves.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Assistant, grammar checkers, Claude AI and even math-solving apps are now used by many students. These AI tools answer questions, explain hard topics, write full essays, solve mathematics problems, correct errors in grammar, do full assignments for students and even perform analysis for higher level education . 

Although these tools can be very useful and helpful, many students are using them too much and forgetting to use their own brains sometimes to do something. They rely too much on AI that they stop trying to learn on their own.  Instead of learning and understanding topics by themselves, students just copy and paste directly from these AI tools which is making some students lazy. At least even if we the students want to use the AI tools, we should try and read what it give us and understand it, if possible putting the words in our own understanding but no, just copy and paste. Like I said initially, I've work in the university ICT cafe and most time if a student brings assignment for me to print out, I go through the assignment and make corrections. Most times I see students copying everything that the AI give him/her completely without going through it including final AI response.

Also, students are now becoming less creative with themselves. AI has makes students become too dependent. Some students cannot do anything unless they first check with AI. Even to write stories and poems which used to help students express their own ideas is now written with AI. AI just write anything in just a few seconds. So instead of thinking and writing on their own stories and create that unique ideas, students just use AI to do the job making their minds to be less creative. The more they depend on AI, the less they become in their own knowledge and in the skills they have.

Before AI became popular, students used to spend time in the library, reading books and looking for answers. They had to study well, research properly so as to be able to write down their thoughts and explanations. But now, many students no longer read. They don’t search for information on their own. They don’t try to understand topics or task giving to them. Just copy and paste from AI. That's all.

AI is also making students less serious in class. Some students don’t listen to lessons or write notes anymore. They know that AI can give them the notes later. So they do something else while the teacher is teaching. 

Well the truth still remains and no doubt that, AI is actually that powerful and best tool that helps us alot, in studies, in running our task, it ease our work but at the same time if it is used wrongly, it can affect learning. Many students are using AI constantly for every task giving to them in school and are not doing anything on their own,  neither reading or writing or thinking. And to grow and succeed, students must use their own minds. 

AI should only be used to guide, not to do all the work. The more students depend on AI, the more they lose their ability to think and perform some task on their own.
