<html> <p>I am 28 years old and I work a sales job from home full-time. All I need is a computer and a phone. It wasn't always like this. I have been in sales since I graduated from college in 2011, and have worked 6 sales jobs since. I travelled a bunch for sales meetings and also have done phone sales in an office. I have been pretty successful and landed an amazing opportunity to work from home. Obviously there are some positives, but also some negatives believe it or not. I will explain below.</p> <p><br></p> <p><img src="http://www.social-hire.com/uploads/spreadsheets.jpg" width="492" height="328"/></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>The Positives</strong></p> <ol> <li><strong>Time.</strong> You get a ton more time to do what you want to do. I find myself having more time throughout the day to run errands and work on my hobbies.</li> <li><strong>Freedom.</strong> Anyone work in an office where your boss is hovering over your shoulder? Yeah that sucks, because I have had jobs where I felt completely micromanaged. Working from home, I have the freedom to do my work without the fear of the eyes of authority hovering around.</li> <li><strong>Comfortability.</strong> The place where you live is probably one of the more comfortable places in your life. Even though I have an office desk, I can sometimes take my laptop and phone and sit on the couch and work. I could even lay in bed!</li> <li><strong>No Commute.</strong> Commuting is terrible. My last job, I used to drive 1.5 hours to the Bronx and back everyday fighting traffic. Now, I can literally roll out of bed, take my time, make my breakfast, drink my coffee, and start when I feel ready to go.</li> </ol> <p><strong>The Negatives</strong></p> <ol> <li><strong>Loneliness.</strong> Even though I talk to people on the phone and send emails, there is nothing like live human interaction. After a month or so working from home, I certainly miss office camaraderie and the relationships I had with coworkers.</li> <li><strong>Finding Motivation.</strong> It takes a while to try and find that motivation. Since I don't have to be anywhere at a certain time, and no one looking at what I do all the time, it is sometimes hard to find that push. It took me a while to get used to that notion that no boss is looking at me, but I got used to it.</li> <li><strong>Becoming a Hermit.</strong> That feeling of always being in the same place all the time. Feeling cooped up in my lair all day sometimes catches up with me. It is sometimes hard to separate the space where you work and the space where you relax, especially if you live in an apartment like I do. I try and change scenery when I can by going to a cafe.</li> <li><strong>Distractions. </strong>When you work from home, there is no supervision. Next to me I have my TV, my Xbox, and anything and everything that I identify fun with. In an office or workplace, everyone is working, so you follow suit, even when you are having a bad day. Also, people knock on my door, my dog is barking and distracting me randomly. Also, my fiance comes home from work early, and I want to spend time with her during work hours. It is important to keep focused and tune out distractions from times when I should be working.</li> </ol> <p><strong>My Conclusions</strong></p> <p>Working from home is amazing. I love it, and overall it is better than coming into an office in my opinion. However, it has it's challenges. In this day and age, working from home is becoming more normalized, and I think that is where the future is heading. Most office employees just need a computer and phone to work. </p> <p><br></p> <p>Does anyone else work from home? What your thoughts? How do you handle distractions? Working from home takes a lot of commitment and dedication to your job. As you said, there are so many distractions and easy ways to kill time, other than working, when you are at home. I enjoy having the option to work from home, but prefer working with my colleagues at an office at least one week per month. It breaks up the monotony of working in the same place, alone, all of the time.

I just started a remote position, and I cant wait. I think flexibility is also a huge positive, as you have the choice to WFH or a co-working space, or your favorite coffe shop, or the park (if you can find some wifi).
